Section Three: Organ and Orchestra

After meeting Tess and delving further into his past life as a changeling, Henry turns back to classical forms. During his honeymoon, he discovers the strange joys of organ music and, from that point forward, yearns to capture his inner life through a musical composition for orchestra and organ. The California ensemble in Chapter 31 is loosely based on the Kronos Quartet, although not to any particular piece.

Alexandre Guilmant
Mahler's "Resurrection" (Symphony No. 2) is good background music for these chapters, as well as the 19th century French master Alexandre Guilmant. The Philharmonic Ingolstadt has a fine CD "Masterworks for Organ and Orchestra." For a contemporary option, try the Grant Park Orchestra with David Schrader, organ on "American Works for Organ and Orchestra." Michael Colgrass's "Snow Walker" is similar in its aspirations of tone to Henry Day's composition "The Stolen Child." Or at least how I imagine it to sound.
