Russian is spoken by about 145 million people worldwide, with nearly 118 million of those living in Russia. Apart from being the official language of Russia, Russian is also an official language in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgysztan. In addition, Russian is spoken by a significant percentage of the populations of other former Soviet countries, including Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Tajikistan, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
