Becoming Italian: At a Cafe, Online, and In Conversation

Dianne Hales closed out October with some great advice for using your Italian in different situations, from the caffè to the internet. A sampling after the jump...

La Bella Lingua al Bar

An Italian never goes to a bar in Italy and asks for an espresso. Instead it's "un caffè, per favore." This is one shot of espresso in a tiny cup, usually corto (short), with a lovely head of light brown crema (or schiuma).
La Bella Lingua in Linea
When I turned on (accendere) il computer, it asked for my nome utente (user name). "How do I connect (connettersi) to the Internet?" I asked the manager (who spoke two languages: Italian and Chinese). After showing me which keys to click (cliccare), he started to dictate a website address: "Vuvuvu.punto." I typed "vvv." before realizing that was how Italians say www.
La Bella Lingua in Conversazione
It doesn't matter how many Italian language grammar drills you do or how many vocabulary words you memorize. Nothing will improve your Italian more than la conversazione. The problem for most English speakers, especially shy ones, is figuring out what to say after "Buongiorno!" (Good day).
And, while you're still here, don't forget to enter the Celebrate Italian Heritage contest! Only four days left to enter to win $115 in prizes! Five winners will be chosen at the end of the week.
