When a "Rainy Day" Is a Good Thing ...

Did you know that water holds a significant place in Iranian culture? Most of central Iran is arid; therefore most Iranian cities are built on the edge of deserts near rivers. Still, the dry climate has made Iranians appreciate water. Some Iranians even celebrate Jashne Tirgan (The Rain Festival) on July 1st.

The word for water in Farsi is ﺁﺐ ab. A number of Farsi words are derived from ﺁﺐ ab. For example, the word ﺁﺒﺎﺩ abad refers to a thriving and prosperous place, and the word ﺁﺒﺎﺩﻯ abadi means town or village.

Another good example is ﺁﺑﺎﺪﺍﻧﻰ abadani, which refers to civic development and prosperity. All of these words hint at the significance of water in Persian history and culture.
