It's all Greek to me, but is it Hebrew to you?
If you don't understand something, you might say "It's all Greek to me." But have you ever wondered what Greek speakers say? After all, it wouldn't really make sense for them to reference their own language as an example of something strange and incomprehensible. Well, they don't. Apparently, Greeks might mention Chinese in that context. And speakers of other languages might use Arabic or Spanish or Hebrew or a variety of other options, depending on the speaker. To learn more, you can go to Language Log for a nice summary of the subject, with links to other articles and charts. The post has a handy little "directed graph" showing which speakers use which languages. You can also go here for a larger version of the graph. Tags: expressions, Greek
