The International Year of Languages
Did you know that 2008 is the International Year of Languages, as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly? You can find a wealth of information about this year-long event, lead by UNESCO and supporting multilingualism and linguistic and cultural diversity, here. The event is organized in recognition of the fact that the safeguarding of linguistic diversity and appreciation of linguistic human rights are the most important prerequisites for the maintenance of cultural diversity and social harmony in the world. And, since all people are naturally able language learners and therefore potential speakers of more than one language, the preservation of linguistic diversity does not have to go against the great benefit of successfully communicating across linguistic communities and borders. Bilingualism and multilingualism are not just enriching personally, but also important tools of cultural understanding and social interrelatedness. As passionate language learners and teachers ourselves, we have mentioned things related to this topic more than once in this newsletter and hope that you'll find time again to explore the projects, books, and articles that are part of UNESCO's important event.
