German language not under threat from English
As English increasingly becomes the the international language of the internet, many European countries fear that the influence of English could be detrimental to the integrity of their language. But how great is the threat? Apparently, the German language is not at risk, according to a study. Onysko searched the text of all articles in Der Spiegel from 2000. He found that less than 6 percent of the magazine's vocabulary (that is, the list of different words it used) consisted of anglicisms. The most common anglicism was the word "Internet," followed closely by "film" and the plural form it has developed in German, Filme. Onysko says that though technology and media have increased the rate of anglicisms in German -- and will continue to increase it -- anglicisms are more rare than German critics fear.
