There's a lot of buzz in the news today about endangered languages, online language learning and what not, so we thought compiling a short post of "LLinks" would be appropriate:

Livonian in Latvia : This article describes efforts by speakers of Livonian to keep their language alive. Their methods (such as language camps, trips to cultural centers, etc) can lend pragmatic ideas to those who are engaged in similar efforts to prevent languages from extinction. Here's another article that describes how the internet can be a valuable tool for preserving languages, and has the potential to "forestall the dismal fate of about half of the world's 6,500 languages, which are doomed to extinction".

Little kids are blogging, and learning a language too : Elementary school kids in Scotland are using blogging, podcasting, and other tools to communicate in languages they learn, and their success is being recognized through various award nominations.

Persian script for plebeians : An old Persian text that recorded quotidian matters has been found, suggesting that old Persian wasn't just restricted for use by the royalty. You can see pictures of the fascinating script in the tablet here (scroll down to page 12). (ELHAM)
