15'. Shrub with cane-like stems; resembles bundle of spiny sticks. Leafless stems carry out photosynthesis; quickly form 2", ovate, fleshy leaves and stalks; become stiff-spined after heavy rains. Flowers 1", red, tubular, in terminal clusters; bloom Mar. - June. Occ. produces leaves and flowers more than twice a year. Habitat: Hilltops, mesas, dry plains, rocky slopes. Range: NV, AZ, NM.
