ROCKY MOUNTAIN STATES

Ponderosa Pines along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Challis, Idaho

The Salmon was originally named "River of No Return" by early explorers, who considered its upper reaches unnavigable. Its Middle Fork, a Wild and Scenic river for 104 miles, is every bit as treacherous and beautiful. The Middle Fork begins in the southeastern corner of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, then flows north through the heart of the wilderness, joining the main Salmon River on its final run to the Snake. A 1-mile stretch of road near Dagger Falls offers the only motorized access. Rafting is the best way to experience the wildlife and scenic wonders of this river; permits are issued to qualified individuals, and a number of licensed commercial outfitters offer overnight trips. For information on rafting trips, call the North Fork Ranger District in the town of North Fork (208-865-2383).

Location: West of Stanley, off Bear Valley Road. Launch site is at Boundary Creek. Contact: Middle Fork Ranger District, P.O. Box 750, Hwy. 93, Challis, ID 83226; 208-879-4101.
