Dog Family
H 15"; L 3'2"; T 13". Grizzled silvery gray above; throat, midbelly white; collar, lower sides, legs, sides of tail rusty; top and tip of tail black. Eats rabbits, rodents, birds, grasshoppers, fruit, berries. Climbs trees. Breeding 2-7 young in summer. Sign Den hidden in natural crevice in woods; often has snagged hair, bone scraps near entrance. Tracks: foreprint 1 1/2" long; hindprint slightly narrower. Habitat Wooded and brushy areas. Activity Day or night, but secretive; year-round. Range c and s New England; more common in se MA.
