Launching from a white shell beach, I knew that I would not see people for several weeks. This was always one of the hardest parts of my trip, plunging into solitude. The transition to being comfortable alone always took at least ten days. After having experienced this level of self-sufficiency--alone for weeks at a time amid such an unforgiving land and seascape--the rest of your life can seem easy in comparison.
