From posters and vintage magazines to original photos and books, when he sat down to write Fields' biography there was almost too much. 4. The first feature film in which W. C. Fields received star billing was D. W. Griffith's 1925 production of "Sally of the Sawdust." Based on Fields' stage success "Poppy," it marked the beginning of his career in silent features. "Sally" was produced by Famous Players-Lasky as a Paramount Picture but, as this title lobby card shows, it was released by United Artists, which still had a claim on Griffith's services.
