Blue
Ribbon Blues
A Tooter Tale
by Jerry Spinelli
Illustrated by Donna Kae Nelson
Ever since her family moved
to Aunt Sally's farm, Tooter's known that farm life
is definitely not for her. There's no pizzeria for
miles, her nearest neighbor is a dumb boy, and even
her own pet chicken hates her! So Tooter decides
to show everyone what she's made of by winning the
blue ribbon at the County Fair's goat show. Now all
she has to do is keep her little brother--and his
paint brush--away from her prize goat!
"Tooter is a real-life, plucky, resourceful heroine."--

Miami
Gets It Straight
Written by Patricia McKissack
and Fredrick McKissack
Illustrated by Michael Chesworth
The Miami series grew out of a real need that Pat McKissack
saw in children’s books: There weren’t many
books about middle-class African American kids. “We
are professional people,” Pat said about herself
and her husband, Fred, in The Dallas Morning News.
“Our kids never knew a hungry day. They lived
a normal, middle-class life on a street that was very
diverse. It’s not that the other kind of stories
aren’t important. But I got tired of African American
children showing up in literature a day late and a dollar
short.”
These three books show Miami Jackson’s third-going-on-fourth-grade
life—getting through the last few days of school
before summer vacation, finding his place in summer
baseball camp, and dealing with a no-nonsense new teacher—with
humor and irrepressible attitude.
Patricia McKissack and Fredrick McKissack have written
tons of wonderful books for children, such as several
Coretta Scott King Award–winning books, including
Black Hands, White Sails; and Sojourner Truth: Ain’t
I a Woman? Pat has also been honored with the Virginia
Hamilton Award. The authors live in St. Louis, MO.

Pepperday
Written by Jerry Spinelli
The Pepperday family is moving to Aunt Sally’s
farm. Mr. Pepperday, Mrs. Pepperday, and Chuckie Pepperday
are happy as hogs in slop. But Tooter Pepperday is not.
There’s no cable TV, no playground, and she’s
gone three days without pizza! What does a girl have
to do to show her family she’ll never get used
to life on the farm?
“Tooter is a real-life, plucky, resourceful heroine
. . . in a good sound story that has a lot to say about
the choices we make and the impact they have.”—Booklist
“Tooter Pepperday . . . is sure to bring on the
chuckles and the giggles.”
—School Library Journal
