Babies need a lot of sleep. How much? Experts say that 1-year-olds need almost 14 hours a night, 2-year-olds need 13 hours, and 3-year-olds need about 12 hours. If your baby isn't getting enough sleep, chances are, you aren't either. Here's how to make it through the night:
  • Start the bedtime wind-down 30 minutes before your child's actual bedtime. Avoid stimulating activities; instead, institute a calming routine of quiet play and story-reading.
  • Don't use TV as the last activity of the night. It's too stimulating for most children, and it doesn't provide the warm, personal interaction your child craves before sleep.
  • Allow your child to create a comforting ritual every night, such as brushing her teeth, reading a story, or tucking in all the stuffed animals in her collection.
  • Tell your child she doesn't have to go to sleep right away, that it's fine with you if she makes up her own quiet games or stories, as long as she stays in bed.
  • If your child protests when you leave, assure her you'll be back in five minutes. Keep coming back at longer intervals until she's asleep.
Help your baby fall asleep with a perfect bedtime story. Here are some suggestions: The Berenstain Baby Bears: Say Night-Night and Thomas the Tank Engine Says Good Night.
