All 50 states have laws requiring babies to ride in car seats. But unless your baby is properly secured in his seat and the seat is properly secured in the car, you may not be providing him with adequate protection. Read the manufacturer's instructions on your car seat and remember the following safety basics:

  • From birth to 1 year, babies up to 20 pounds should ride in a rear-facing seat.
  • Never use a rear-facing seat in a seat equipped with an air bag.
  • Manufacturer's instructions about which seat is right for your baby often go by weight and/or age; more important, however, is the height of his head in relation to the back of the seat. If your baby's head is higher than the back of the seat, it's time to buy a new car seat.
  • When using a combination lap/shoulder belt, use a locking clip.
  • Your example is powerful. Demonstrate good auto safety by always wearing your own seat belt.
