Some babies take to the bath like a fish to water. Others, however, don't like to take the plunge. Either way, there are key safety tips that all new parents must know:

  • Run several inches of lukewarm water and test the temperature before you put the baby in the tub.
  • Never add water directly from the faucet while the baby is in the tub.
  • Turn the hot water off first so the faucet doesn't stay hot.
  • Never leave a baby unattended in the tub-even for an instant.
  • Bubble bath products can irritate a baby's skin. Use hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soaps and moisturizers.
  • Allow your child to take a favorite, waterproof toy into the tub. Soft, squishy bath books also provide comfort and distraction for bathing beauties. Some good choices that also feature bubbly, play-along rhymes: The Berenstain Baby Bears: It's Bathtime, Whale Baby, and Elmo Wants a Bath.
