Dear friends who I am writing to,

It’s me! Junie B. Jones. The B stands for Beatrice. Except I don’t like Beatrice. I just like B. and that’s all.

I am in the grade of afternoon kindergarten. It is very fun there. Only sometimes I have big problems. ’Cause that is life, people.

When I first started kindergarten, I didn’t like the bus. Only too bad for me, ’cause Mother made me ride it anyway. But good news! I found out that my bestest friend named Grace rides the bus, too! And now I save her a seat every day. And me and that Grace take turns sitting next to the window!

My room is named Room Nine. There is lots of stuff to learn at that place. One time our class had Job Day. We had to dress up as the kind of job we want to be when we get big. Only I couldn’t actually think of anything. Plus also, I got in trouble with my big fat mouth. But finally I came up with a very fun job. And it was a beaut, I tell you!

Hey, that reminds me! Guess what other kind of special day we had at school? We had Pet Day, that’s what! And wait till you hear this. We were allowed to bring our real actual pets to school! Only no cats or dogs. And so that left out my dog named Tickle. But hurray for me! ’Cause I finally found a different pet to bring. And it was another beaut!

Whoops! I almost forgot to tell you about another friend I have at my school. His name is Principal. Principal lives at the office. Sometimes—when I get in trouble—I have to go talk to him. Only guess what? I am not even afraid of that guy. That is how come I always tell him what’s on my mind. Like one time I told him that I spied my teacher eating a grape in the grocery store. (And she didn’t even pay for it!) Plus another time, I told him about how I accidentally stole an invitation to Meanie Jim’s birthday. Because I really wanted to go to that boy’s birthday party, of course. But Jim didn’t actually invite me. And so what kind of meanie trick is that?

Here is another fun thing I learned at school. I learned how to get a handsome boy to like me! ’Cause all you have to do is be yourself, apparently. And also you can tell him knock-knock jokes! I am an excellent joke teller. Also, I am very attractive, I think. Only I am not allowed to cut my own hair anymore. (But that is a whole different story.)

Now here is the happiest news of all!!! My teacher told my class that after we get finished with afternoon kindergarten, we are going to graduate to first grade! Wowie wow wow! What a thrill that will be! Only I don’t actually know what graduate means.

Hmm. Maybe I might ask Mother what that word means. ’Cause everything I learn makes my brain smarter and smarter. And in first grade I will need the smartest brain that I can get, probably!

All rightie! Here I go! Have a happy day, people. And guess what? I will have a happy day, too!

From your friend,
