RULES

  1. HOW TO ENTER • NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.
    The Random House Children’s Books Everyday Heroes contest is open to parents and legal guardians of children in first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grade, or the homeschool equivalents. To enter, parents or legal guardians must submit a paragraph or two (300 words or less) written by the child discussing the child’s everyday hero. Entries must be the child’s own work.

A downloadable entry form is also available, or entry forms may be obtained by written request sent before March 20, 2014, along with a stamped, self-addressed return envelope, to: Magic Tree House Everyday Heroes Contest, Random House LLC, 1745 Broadway, Mail Drop 9-1, New York, NY 10019.

Entry forms that are not completed online should be mailed to Magic Tree House Everyday Heroes Contest, Random House LLC, 1745 Broadway, Mail Drop 9-1, New York, NY 10019. LIMIT ONE ENTRY PER CHILD. Entries must be mailed separately and received by Random House no earlier than March 6, 2014, and postmarked no later than April 3, 2014. Any entries received before March 6, 2014, or postmarked after April 3, 2014, will be automatically disqualified. Entries must be original. Partially completed or illegible entries will not be accepted. Random House is not responsible for lost, late, mutilated, illegible, stolen, postage-due, incomplete, or misdirected entries. All entries become the property of Random House and will not be returned, so please keep a copy for your records.

To be considered, each entry must include the following:

  1. A written submission of 1–2 paragraphs (300 words or less) that describes the child’s everyday hero and explains why the child considers that person a hero.

  2. The full name, address, email address, and phone number of the child’s parent or legal guardian, along with the child’s first name and grade.
  1. ELIGIBILITY • Contest is open to parent or legal guardians of children in first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grades, or the homeschool equivalent, and must live in the 50 states, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia, or Canada, excluding the Province of Quebec. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. Void wherever prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Penguin Random House LLC, and their parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, and advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies, their immediate family members, and persons living in their household are not eligible to enter this contest.

  2. PRIZES • Five (5) grand prize winners will each win a boxed set of Magic Tree House books: The Magic Tree House Library: Books 1–28. Additionally, each of the five (5) grand prize winners will receive a Magic Tree House #51: High Time for Heroes book signed by Mary Pope Osborne and a copy of Magic Tree House Fact Tracker: Heroes for All Times signed by Natalie Pope Boyce. Also, each winner’s chosen school or library will receive a boxed set of Magic Tree House books: The Magic Tree House Library: Books 1–28. If for any reason a prize is not available or cannot be fulfilled, Random House reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value. Prizes are not transferable and cannot be assigned. No prize or cash substitutes allowed, except at the discretion of Random House as set forth in these rules.
  1. WINNERS • Winners will be chosen on or around April 18, 2014, from all eligible entries received by Random House within the entry deadline. Entries will be judged by the staff of Random House, whose decisions are final. One winner per grade will be chosen. Within each grade, winners will be selected based on the equally weighted criteria of content, clarity of thought, and execution. Winners and their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) will be notified by email or phone, and will be required to sign and return affidavit(s) of eligibility and release of liability within 14 days of notification. If the affidavit is not received by Random House within that time period, or if any notification is returned as undeliverable, that winner will be disqualified and an alternate winner will be selected. In the event of any other noncompliance with rules and conditions, prize may be awarded to an alternate winner. Winners will be notified by mail on or around May 5, 2014.
  1. RESERVATIONS AND WAIVER • By participating, entrants agree that Random House LLC, and its parent companies, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, advertising, promotion, fulfillment agencies, and suppliers will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by entrants for any liability for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind to person and property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, misuse, or use of the prize, or participation in this Contest. By entering the Contest, each winner consents to the use of the winning entry along with the first name, grade, and school of their child for publicity and promotional purposes on behalf of Random House LLC with no additional compensation or further permission (except where prohibited by law). Entry names will NOT be used for subsequent mail, email or telephone solicitation. For the names of the winners, available after April 30, 2014, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Random House, Magic Tree House Everyday Hero Contest Winner, 1745 Broadway, Mail Drop 9-1, New York, NY 10019. Washington and Vermont residents may omit return postage.
