Brian's Winter
Gary Paulsen

Along with The River, Brian's Winter is one of two companion books to Hatchet, which won a Newbery Honor Award. Brian's Winter begins where Hatchet might have ended: Brian is no longer rescued at the end of the summer. Instead, he has to build on his survival skills to face the deadliest enemy of allwinter.
Start thinking:
Brian has to use nature to get food and clothing, yet he also appreciates the wilderness for more than what it can do for him. Find evidence that Brian is a careful hunter who understands how to conserve wildlife. What do these traits tell you about him as a character?
Brian takes charcoal from the fire to make sketches of the events of the day on his shelter wall. Why do you think he does this?
Paulsen uses strong imagery: "the truth sliding in like a snake"; "It's like being inside...a beautiful glass crystal." Look for examples of powerful descriptive language that appeal to a variety of the senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
