Step 3: Get Thinking

The River
Gary Paulsen

spacer gif Along with Brian's Winter, The River is one of two companion books to Hatchet, which won a Newbery Honor Award. In The River, Brian is asked to return to the woods to teach Derek, a psychologist, some survival techniques. Now he has to save not just himself but the injured Derek as well!

Start thinking:

After the accident, Brian has to decide what to do with Derek: leave him and go for help, or take him downriver in a raft? How does Brian weigh the pros and cons before making the decision? How do his decisions impact his own safety?

Brian says that he was "reborn in the woods." What does Brian mean? How might his "rebirth" affect his future relationships?

Brian has to use nature to get food and clothing, yet he also appreciates the wilderness for more than what it can do for him. Find evidence that Brian is a careful hunter who understands how to conserve wildlife. What do these traits tell you about him as a character?
