         <title>John Francis&apos;s Earth Day Planetwalk</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Coinciding with Earth Day and the trade paperback release of <em><a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9781426204050">Planetwalker</a></em>, author <a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/author.pperl?authorid=80809">Dr. John Francis</a>, with his nonprofit educational organization <a href="http://www.planetwalk.org/">Planetwalk</a>, is conducting a 5-day expedition in East Central Ohio, April 22-27, 2009, during which time about 12 participants will continue to develop the environmental curriculum, Planetlines. </p>

<p>The goal of the walk that began from Cape May in 2005 is to raise awareness of the human environment and how each person can make the difference in preserving Planet Earth. On April 23, Dr. Francis will make a live satellite presentation from the road to the <a href="http://www.planetwalk.org/events_folder/missouri-state-university-public-affairs-conference">Missouri State University Public Affairs Conference on Sustainability in Springfield</a>. </p>

         <title>Sandra Day O&apos;Connor Promotes Civic Learning Campaign in Schools</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Former Supreme Court Justice <a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/author.pperl?authorid=22507">Sandra Day O'Connor</a> has been promoting the importance of civic education in the classroom. She is the co-chair of the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, a coalition of 40 organizations committed to improving the quality and quantity of civic learning in American schools. </p>

<p>The Campaign's goal is to increase and improve civic learning in grades K-12 by working for policies that implement the recommendations of the Civic Mission of Schools report. This includes efforts to bring about changes in national, state, and local education policy.</p>

         <title>Literature to Life program</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The American Place Theatre's <em>Literature to Life</em> is an arts and literacy outreach program serving tens of thousands young people and educators in New York City and across the country.  <em>Literature to Life</em> develops students' engagement and academic achievement by fostering personal connections to their classroom curriculum through theatre.</p>

<p>Ray Bradbury's classic American novel, <em><a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780345410016">Fahrenheit 451</a></em>, is the newest <em>Literature to Life</em> adaptation now available as a presentation for students and educational audiences.</p>

         <title>Firoozeh Dumas Wins 2008 Spirit of America Award</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/author.pperl?authorid=46937">Firoozeh Dumas</a>, author of <em><a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780812968378">Funny in Farsi</a></em>, has received the 2008 Spirit of America Award.  Awarded by the National Council for the Social Studies, this honor is given to an individual in or out of the social studies profession who has made a significant or special contribution which exemplifies the "American Democratic Spirit."  Such a person has followed their conscience and acted against current thinking in order to stand up for equity, freedom, and the American spirit of justice.</p>

<p>Prior recipients include Jimmy Carter, Rosa Parks, Jim Lehrer, and Mr. (Fred) Rogers.<br />
