Since 1926, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has established the national theme for the month-long celebration. This year's theme is "Black Women in American Culture and History."

We are proud to announce that Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, Roland Merullo's The Talk-Funny Girl, Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, and Daniel Wilson's Robopocalypse were four of the ten titles awarded a 2012 Alex Award. Bestowed by the American Library Association, Alex Award winners are recognized as books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.

The Asian American Resource and Cultural Center at the University of Illinois - Chicago is sponsoring a free event for author GB Tran on Thursday, November 17 from 4-6pm. Tran will discuss his graphic memoir, Vietnamerica, which chronicles his family's experiences before, during, and after the Vietnam War and their immigration to the United States. Piri Thomas, the author of Down These Mean Streets, passed away in his El Cerrito, California home on Monday at the age of 83. Thomas, who grew up in Spanish Harlem during the 1930s and 40s, exposed the tough conditions of New York's ghetto to an unaware America and inspired generations of authors with his memoir, novels, and poetry. Written in 1967, Down These Mean Streets has become a staple in college and high school classrooms across the country.

On Friday, October 14th, 2011, Beacon Press and the Random House, Inc. Academic Marketing Department will co-host a unique and collaborative publisher-educator summit focused on the acclaimed "The King Legacy" series, a partnership between Beacon Press and the Estate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Editors and teachers participating in this intensive one-day workshop are tasked with developing new anthologies to make Dr. King's own writings accessible for the 21st Century curriculum. New Jane Eyre Movie in Theaters Now

Cary Fukunaga's film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's classic novel, Jane Eyre, is now in theaters and the reviews are glowing. A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote that it was a "splendid example of how to tackle the daunting duty of turning a beloved work of classic literature into a movie" and Karina Longworth of The Village Voice wrote that "[u]sing Brontë's text as the basis for an inquiry into free will versus servitude, [Cary] Fukunaga mounts a subtly shaded, yet emotionally devastating, examination of what it really means to choose one's own way." Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the lead roles are played by Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds), with a supporting cast including Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, and Sally Hawkins.

The New Cool: Celebrating Brains Over Brawn

The NYC FIRST Robotics Competition will take place from March 11-13th at the Javits Center in Manhattan, where over 60 high school teams from around the world will showcase their robotic creations and compete for the championship.

To celebrate the release of the new movie of Jane Eyre, Vintage Books and Focus Features are pleased to present the Jane Eyre Gothic Story Competition for Young Writers. Students aged 13-18 can enter by submitting an original gothic short story for the chance to win a trip for two to visit "Brontë Country," in Yorkshire, England, including economy roundtrip airfare, four-star hotel accommodations for four nights, a trip to visit the Brontë sisters' Parsonage, and a guided walking tour of Brontë Country.
