Celebrate African American History Month with Random House, Inc.

Since 1926, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History has established the national theme for the month-long celebration. This year's theme is "Black Women in American Culture and History."

In addition to Black Women for Beginners—an ideal book for this year's theme—we are happy to suggest these other great, graphic non-fiction titles also from the For Beginners imprint: African History for Beginners and Black History for Beginners. And don't miss these great graphic offerings from the Campfire Books line as well: Muhammad Ali: The King of the Ring and Nelson Mandela: The Unconquerable Soul.

Celebrate African American History Month with your students by sharing these titles from Knopf Doubleday: The Warmth of Other Suns, the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life; The Grace of Silence, a memoir that boldly examines racial legacy and what it means to be an American, and Life Upon These Shores, a landmark book tracing African American history from the arrival of the conquistadors to the election of Barack Obama.

New Jane Eyre Movie in Theaters Now

Cary Fukunaga's film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's classic novel, Jane Eyre, is now in theaters and the reviews are glowing. A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote that it was a "splendid example of how to tackle the daunting duty of turning a beloved work of classic literature into a movie" and Karina Longworth of The Village Voice wrote that "[u]sing Brontë's text as the basis for an inquiry into free will versus servitude, [Cary] Fukunaga mounts a subtly shaded, yet emotionally devastating, examination of what it really means to choose one's own way." Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the lead roles are played by Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds), with a supporting cast including Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, and Sally Hawkins.

Now available, The New Cool is the astonishing story of a team of high school seniors and their remarkable mentor, who come together—not to play a sport or exercise their athletic prowess—but rather to build a machine that will battle in the most heated, sophisticated robotics contest in the world. The FIRST Robotics competition, sponsored by genius inventor Dean Kamen, is jumpstarting American innovation for the next generation—and beyond.

The Wall Street Journal had this to say about Bascomb's inspiring tale of triumph: ". . . It offers a lesson in how American kids can thrive when faced with daunting challenges. . . . [The book] inevitably raises troubling questions about whether America can regain its leadership in science and engineering even with Mr. Kamen's inventive approach."
