         <title>Norman Mailer High School and College Writing Awards</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Norman Mailer Writers Colony invite submissions for the <a href="http://www.ncte.org/awards/student/nmwa">Norman Mailer High School and College Writing Awards</a>. Entries will be accepted April 1-29. National winners in each category will receive a cash award of $5,000 or $10,000.</p>

<p>The High School Competition is open to all high school students. The Two-Year College Competition is open to first- and second-year full-time students enrolled in community colleges, junior colleges, and technical colleges. The Four-Year College Competition is open to current full-time undergraduate students.</p>

         <title>2010 Alex Award Winner</title>

The winning titles are selected from the previous year's publishing.</p>

         <title>Celebrate Banned Books Week</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Sponsored by several leading arts, educational and trade associations, <a href="http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/bannedbooksweek/index.cfm">Banned Books Week</a> (September 26-October 3, 2009) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.  Held during the last week of September, the week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.</p>

         <title>The Complete Persepolis Selected for the 2010 One Book, One Philadelphia</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Iranian-French author Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, <em><a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/highschool/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780375714832">The Complete Persepolis</a></em>, has been announced as the selection for the <a href="http://libwww.freelibrary.org/onebook/obop10/">2010 One Book, One Philadelphia</a>.</p>

<p>"Marjane's book was a natural choice given the recent events in Iran," said Marie Field, chair of the citywide literacy program. One Book, which is entering its eighth year, will feature more than 100 lectures, discussion groups, and workshops at numerous venues throughout the city. Organizers also will help coordinate high school programs for students in 10th grade and up.<br />

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In her recent piece "Sands Shift in Summer Reading" (<a href="http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/family/articles/2009/06/28/popular_literature_making_its_way_onto_summer_reading_lists_west_of_boston/"><em>Boston Globe</em>, June 28, 2009</a>), journalist Lisa Kocian examines how teachers, in an effort to encourage their students to read more, are adding new and unconventional books to their summer reading lists.
