Short Cuts

Introduction by Robert Altman
The nine stories and one poem collected in this volume form the basis for an astonishingly original new film of the same title, directed by Robert Altman. These now-classic stories, when read together, form a searing and indelible portrait of American innocence and loss. With deadpan humor and enormous tenderness, Short Cuts is recognized as the work of "one of the true contemporary masters" (New York Review of Books) of American fiction.

Stories include: "Neighbors," "They're Not Your Husband," "Vitamins," "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?", "So Much Water So Close to Home," "A Small, Good Thing," "Jerry and Molly and Sam," "Collectors," "Tell the Women We're Going," and the poem "Lemonade."
Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. His first collection of stories, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please (a National Book Award nominee in 1977), was followed by What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral (nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1984), and Where I'm Calling From in 1988, when he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He died August 2, 1988, shortly after completing the poems of A New Path to the Waterfall. View titles by Raymond Carver

PRH Education High School Collections

All reading communities should contain protected time for the sake of reading. Independent reading practices emphasize the process of making meaning through reading, not an end product. The school culture (teachers, administration, etc.) should affirm this daily practice time as inherently important instructional time for all readers. (NCTE, 2019)   The Penguin Random House High
