HELL HATH NO FURY fills a significant gap in the way we look at women's contributions and role in war. These compelling biographical essays give an in-depth sense of the widely different ways in which women across all cultures have participated in war--from the front lines to the the medical tents, in the air and on the sea, on the airwaves and as spies--and many roles in between.

Women have been involved in war as active participants from ancient times to today. They have been political leaders (Elizabeth I, Indira Gandhi); combatants (Artemesia of Halicarnassus, Lady Mary Bankes); spies (Vera Atkins, Ruth Beurton); diplomats (Nguyen Thi Binh, Condoleezza Rice); they have been involved with entertainment/propaganda (Dame Laura Knight, Jane Fonda) and torture (Dorothea Binz, Gerda Quernheim).

HELL HATH NO FURY groups these women--and many whose names have been forgotten--into sections for easy reference; within each section individual women are presented alphabetically. The book will ultimately introduce to students a gallery of women who have taken action, and who have challenged society's preconceived notions of womanhood.

All reading communities should contain protected time for the sake of reading. Independent reading practices emphasize the process of making meaning through reading, not an end product. The school culture (teachers, administration, etc.) should affirm this daily practice time as inherently important instructional time for all readers. (NCTE, 2019)   The Penguin Random House High
