SPY FACT OF THE DAY
Margarete Hoke

Secretary in the office of West German President Richard von Weizsacker arrested on charges of espionage.

Officials of the BFV (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution) said that she had worked for West German presidents from 1959 until her arrest in Aug. 1985. She was one of many secretaries targeted by KGB and Stasi intelligence officers, who used sex as an accompaniment to spying. She was arrested after being named by Oleg Gordievsky, a KGB defector.

Hoke's handler was her lover, Franz Becker, a Soviet intelligence officer. She was accused of passing him copies of more than 1,700 classified documents, along with reports she had seen from Western embassies. Becker managed to flee when Hoke was arrested. In 1987 she was sentenced to eight years in prison.
