SPY FACT OF THE DAY
Goldfinger

U.S. Navy intelligence operation employing a modified p-3 ORION maritime reconnaissance aircraft to monitor nuclear weapons being shipped by the Soviets. The aircraft was employed in the late 1960s and early 1970s to compliment the monitoring efforts of Navy surface ships and craft.

Although obstensibly named for the James Bond novel of the same name, the code name GOLDFINGER was derived from the name of the U.S. Director of Naval Intelligence from 1968 to 1971, Rear Adm. F.J. Harlfinger.
