Bookseller CommentsWe sent advance copies of The Silver Wolf to a variety of booksellers who had expressed interest in similar books. Here are a few of their comments.
Wow! I stayed up all nght to finish this book. I loved the totally different way the werewolf was developed in this book! One can definitely tell that Alice Borchardt and Anne Rice are chips off the same block--and yet, each women has a unique voice. Great intrigue and romance. I will recommend this to all our fantasy and fiction customers. I hope there will be many more to come! --Susannah Evans, Waldenbooks, Morrow, Georgia Who would have thought a book featuring a werewolf as the protagonist could be so lyrical and enchanting in tone? This was a beautifully told story with all the elements of a great tale--romance, intrigue and suspense. --Frank Walsh, Mysteries to Die For, Thousand Oaks, California Excellent book! Hopefully this is the beginning of an unforgettable series with these complex and fascinating characters. I can't wait for her next book! Will recommend highly! --Diane Kowalski, Ralph's Books, Casper, Wyoming What a wonderful book! I didn't want it to end! It was amazing how 450+ pages can fly by like that! This book has turned me on to a whole new genre that I've missed out on. As a history enthusiast, I was enchanted by the vivid descriptions of Rome during the Dark Ages and by the fascinating portrayal of the political and religious forces which shaped the city during that time. This book certainly made me think twice about the plight of women in this era--I had never considered how truly powerless a woman in Regeane's position would be--completely at the mercy of her family. The Silver Wolf was beautifully written, the characters were skillfully drawn and the plot kept me glued to the page. All of those elements combined with the impeccable research, the mythology, the story of the coming of age of a strong woman in an era that had no respect for such a "creature" and you have one fabulous book! Thank you! I will recommend this one until I'm blue in the face. Everyone should have a chance to enter the world of Alice Borchardt's The Silver Wolf. --Linda O'Keefe, Barnes & Noble, Honolulu, Hawaii This little known period in history proves to be a truly fascinating setting for in this book and so well depicted by Alice Borchardt! Wild and wonderful! What a wonderful craftsperson--this author! I hope this book is only one of many in the same genre with the further adventures of Regeane. More, more, more! --Virginia H. Hicks, The Book Shop, Brunswick, Georgia Wow! This book grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go. Amazing--I could almost taste the food they feasted on and see the crumbling grandeur of "The Eternal City" in the Dark Ages. I enjoyed the unusual setting--a period and place little explored in fiction. Definitely one I will recommend--whether for fans of historical fiction, political and religious intrigue, fantasy, or romance--a winner! --Christy Lawrence, Barnes & Noble, Escondido, California The darkly gruesome beginning evolves into a wonderful tale. The seemingly casual mix of so many elements--history, paganism, mythology & superstition--kept me quite intrigued and delighted--and up all night reading. I will highly recommend this to my fantasy-reading friends and customers. --Keri Stapleton, Menaul Book Exchange, Albuquerque, New Mexico A terrific read--vivid, magical, romantic and richly comic. While comparisons with Anne Rice are inevitable, Borchardt avoids Rice's gothic excess, achieving high drama without melodrama. I will recommend this book enthusiastically. --Marlys Pearson, Super Crown, Fairfax, Virginia Alice Borchardt has certainly put an interesting and unique spin on the traditional werewolf tale. I don't think I've ever read a story about this particular myth where the reader is allowed to intimately know the actual person behind "the curse." Every step of the way the author welcomes the reader into the day to day life of an awe-inspring woman. With every page the story builds and I found myself stopping so I could reread and thus revisit many of the passages where the strength and beauty of Regeane is wonderfully written. There are so many interesting elements to this character and to her life's situations. It's very easy to become enthralled as you feel yourself becoming lost in all the historical drama. The author has obviously done her historical homework and has woven within its framework a wonderful new twist on a very old, traditional myth. --Teresa Cantrell, Hawley-Cooke/Gardiner, Louisville, Kentucky I have stayed up late into the night finishing this delightful tale of woman and beast against the cruelties of man and politics. I have worked in bookstores for several years and have never come across anything quite like it. Now that I have finished the last chapter, I will miss Regeane and the wolf. Thank you for a delightful tale. --Sharon Smith, Barnes & Noble, Huntsville, Alabama
