About the Author

Mark Vancil has worked on numerous books about various sports and prominent athletic superstars. He was the developer, coordinator, and editor of Michael Jordan's very popular pictorial autobiography, RARE AIR: MICHAEL ON MICHAEL, and the editor of ANDRETTI, DIAMOND DREAMS, and DAN MARINO: ON THE RECORD. David Halberstam (author of introduction) is a legendary figure in American journalism. His landmark trilogy of books on power in America, THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST, THE POWERS THAT BE, and THE RECKONING have helped define the latter part of this century more than any journalistic works, and have won him innumerable awards as well as broad critical acclaim. For his Vietnam reporting, Halberstam, at the age of 30, was awarded The Pulitzer Prize and every other major journalistic award. Harper's Magazine has called Mr. Halberstam "a legend in American journalism." Commentary called him, "The Times most exceptional reporter of recent years." Newsday said that he is simply "one of our great reporters." And Bob Woodward of Watergate fame called him "the journalistic father to a generation of us who went into the profession because of what he did in Vietnam." The Washington Post has called him, "The journalist as samurai."
