For Brazilian readers of The Book Thief, Markus will be appearing at Biennal – the Rio Book Fair – in mid-September

July, 2007:

The Book Thief has been #1 since late June on the two major bestseller lists in Taiwan – the Eslite and Kingstone Fiction Charts.

June, 2007:

After sitting at #2 for several weeks, The Book Thief is now number one on the fiction bestseller list in Brazil.

April, 2007:

The Book Thief has hit #2 on the Brazilian bestseller list.
To date, The Book Thief has been:

#1 at Amazon.com
#1 on the New York Times Children’s Bestseller list
#4 on the UK general fiction list
#1 on the Irish general fiction list
#5 on the 2006 Australian Fiction list.


Markus will be speaking and reading from The Book Thief and I am the Messenger at the Texas Museum of Art on April 22 at 3pm.

January, 2007:
The Book Thief has been released in the UK and has hit #4 on the bestseller list.

Two awards for fiction containing a Jewish theme have been won by The Book Thief – the Association of Jewish Libraries inaugural Teen Book Award, and the Jewish National Book Award (in the Young Adult \ Childrens’ division).

The Book Thief also wins a Printz Honor Award!


December 2006:
In a list of bestsellers for 2006 in Australia, the Book Thief has come in at #5 for Australian Fiction.

August 2006:
The Book Thief has been nominated for a 2006 Quill Book Award in the Young Adult Literature category. The Quills Book Awards are the only book awards chosen by consumers. To vote, visit www.quillsvote.com. Online voting begins on August 22nd and continues through September 30, 2006.

The Quills is the first awards program to honor excellence in publishing and include consumers in the voting process. Readers can cast their ballots for their favorites among the nominees for each category, and choose from the finalists in all genres for the “Book of the Year.”

July 2006:
The Book Thief has been shortlisted for the Australian Book Industry Awards in two categories: the Literary Fiction Book of the Year as well as Book of the Year across all categories. Books are voted upon by all publishers in Australia.

June 2006:
The number of countries who have bought rights to The Book Thief now include the UK, Germany, Italy, Russia, France, Spain, Brazil, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Holland, Israel, Serbia, Finland, Taiwan and Norway.

May 2006:
The Book Thief has won the Kathleen Mitchell Award - an award given for literary merit by a writer aged thirty or under at time of publication.

The Book Thief was shortlisted for the Australian Booksellers Book of the Year. Out of six shortlisted books across all categories, the winner was Kate Grenville's The Secret River.

Markus was chosen as one of the Sydney Morning Herald's Young Writers of the year for The Book Thief. Other authors chosen were Leigh Redhead for Rubdown, Stephanie Bishop for The Singing and Tony Wilson for Players.
