Given the press of Luanne Rice's writing schedule, we will be closing the "Ask Luanne" mailbox. She thanks you for your interest and comments, which she has very much appreciated.
Below please find more than fifty reader questions and Luanne's responses to them.
Dear Luanne,
I absoultly love, love, love your books! I particularly enjoy reading all about the beach! I absoulty love the beach, but is that where u grew up at or just have a love for that place?
~sky~
dear sky,
i have a character with your name, except with an “e” (skye) in “firefly beach”…
yes, i did grow up spending summers at the beach. a very magical place on the connecticut shore…my parents met there, and we spent many happy years there, and my family goes there still. i find comfort and inspiration in the sand and the waves, and the endless sky.
I was lucky enough to be the first customer to have her book signed by you last Saturday at the Waterford Wal-Mart. It was a pleasure to meet you. I really felt star struck to be meeting someone as famous as you. Your books have thrilled me for years. The fact that you write about local areas makes the books seem more real to me. I work at The Day Publishing Company newspaper in New London and when you write about the Gold Star Bridge or Bank Street it just gets me more and more excited to read your books to find out where you will be taking the reader.
Do you have a new book in the works or do you take some time off after completing a book? How do you come up with the titles you have used?
I look forward to your next book and wish you luck in everything you do in the future.
Take care.
Kathy
Groton, CT
dear kathy,
thank you for coming out that cold day! it was really nice to meet you.
i’m glad you like my books, and enjoy the local references. the connecticut shoreline is such an inspiring area; i’ve spent all my summers there, and a few winters as well… the day has always been so supportive of my work—last summer ann baldelli came to my house and wrote a profile. in the past, i’ve been interviewed by other reporters there. i’m very grateful to the paper, and everyone who works there.
i do have a new book coming out this summer— “what matters most.”
as for titles…they’re inspired by themes in the books, and often come while i’m dreaming.
Can you please tell me when Sandcastles will be coming out in paperback?
I hope it’s very soon. I have read and enjoyed all your books.
Denise
hi denise,
it will be out this summer, on july 17. thank you!
I greatly enjoy reading your books. I love the idea of living near the coast, therefore your books are always a trip to the sea and it’s always easy to imagine the stories are about real people. Thanks for the pleasure. My question, who does your front-cover illustrations. I wish I could paint pictures like them.
i’m so glad you like my book covers…i love them, too. i’m not sure which particular novel you’re referring to, but i’ll pass your praise on to the art department.
Dear Luanne,
What made you write “Summer’s Child” and “Summer of Roses”? I wanted to tell you that I loved a man like Edward, but got away from him in time. I can’t believe how much I was fooled for so long. He seemed like one kind of man when I met him, then changed into another as time went by. He fooled my whole family. Your books helped me see the truth.
Love,
Jen
dear jen,
once i was interviewing an fbi agent, while getting background for one of my characters. the character was a family man—spiritual, even religious, outwardly kind, well-known in his community. he was emotionally wounded by a rough childhood, and his wife wanted to heal him. but he had a dark side that emerged (as you say) as time went by: he was a predator. the agent listened to me describe him—handsome, funny, bright. then he said, “he’s a con man, and con men don’t tell you they’re conning you. the good ones are so good, their victims don’t realize until after they’ve lost everything.” even wives.
even strong women can fall for con men—as lily (my female character) learns, the best thing she can do is really listen to herself, trust her gut. and believe what he does, not necessarily what he says…
thanks for writing.
Was your beach house at [Hubbard’s Point], on [hidden]? I spent summers there with my crazy grandmother in “Fenwick.” I recall a family named Rice next door and was wondering if that was your family or if that is your married name.
Susan
hi susan,
yes, that’s my grandfather’s cottage. my aunt still owns it, and i live down the road.
i remember your grandmother.
I just received a paperback from Random House on your behalf for writing a something in “what Matters Most”. Thank you!
Thank you for being such a wonderful & entertaining writer…love, love your work.
thank you for posting at “what matters most”!
i really appreciate it…
I started with Dance With Me. My mom had bought it, but I ‘borrowed’ it. I was truly touched by your style of writing and the happenings in the book. After that, I read Summer Light and again, I had to cry. I can’t believe I have been to the library all these years without even knowing you. I’m a 14-year-old Dutch girl, so most of your books are translated in my language. However, when I find an untranslated copy, I háve to read it. The way you use the English language is so beautiful, but more than that, I learn from
your books.
Dance With Me still is my favorite. Please never stop writing.
With love,
Marlies.
dear marlies,
thank you for your touching email! i’m so happy to know you have found my work.
and that you read me in both dutch and english…
your kind words mean a lot to me.
Luanne
I just started reading your books and I enjoy them very much. The first one I got at the library, and when I turned to the back cover and saw your picture, the one when you were younger, I thought you were a girl I used to work with. You look just like her. I worked in a Hospital laboratory in Flint Mich. for 30 years and am retired now . I still live in Mich. and spend summers in Fl. She wore her hair just like that and same color and the same smile. She was married and had three small children. After reading about you , I figured that it probably was not you. I will keep reading your books, I enjoy them so much.
Janice
hi janice,
although i’m not that person, it’s interesting to know i have a double…
thanks for reading my books!
Hi,
I read your books and enjoy the messages. If there are series I like to read the books in order. I went to your “Ask Luanne” page and found a list of all your books, but I can’t tell which are series and which are not. Maybe there aren’t any series … How can I tell if a book is in a series and if so, what other books go with that series.
Thanks for your help and have a blessed day.
hello,
“summers child” and “summer of roses” are linked, as are “sandcastles” and the forthcoming “what matters most.”
several other novels have the common locale of hubbard’s point, but they’re not specifically series.
hope this helps!
I was interested in your website in that it said you dropped out of college. What were you majoring in and to what do you attribute your writing skills to?
Also, as an aspiring writer, what advise would you give me to reach my goal? I would like to attend some workshops, too, and would like some advise as to which ones you would recommend.
Thanks!
Susan
Bismarck, ND
dear susan,
my writing skills…well, i attribute them to reading, imagining, and trying over and over again. i never studied writing. my mother encouraged me from the time i was young (so i also attribute them to her.)
when i dropped out of college, i was majoring in art history…
as for workshops…i’ll be speaking at the maui writer’s conference next august…and my friend suzanne strempek shea will be teaching in ireland in july… but i’m sure you can find something close to home, that will speak to your heart and soul. or you could just pick up a pen and paper write now, and see what happens.
What a great blog you had on 3/3/07. My sister Jilleen Hays was one of your subjects in your blog, as was my mother Joanne Phillips. My mom was one of your biggest fans and my sister is one of your biggest fans. I can only tell you I am “trying to be the “READER TYPE” !! I am a bit high strung with lots of energy! Since last Memorial day I have read eight books, in which I am proud of that accomplishment. My normal speed is “In Touch” and “Lansing (MI) State Journal” .
My team [at the Grand Ledge Relay for Life] is in honor of my mom Joanne Phillips, who was diagnosed with leukemia on November 15, 2005 and sadly passed away November 8, 2006. My team is also in honor of my grandmother Roberta Doty and aunt Rose Doty whom are breast cancer survivors.
Thanks so much for your time and blessings to you and your family,
Mary Jo Phillips-Jones
Grand Ledge Relay for Life
dear mary jo,
your mother was a wonderful woman. she made a big impression on me, although i met her only once; she came to a reading of mine in ann arbor with other members of the princess book club. she was so dynamic and positive—i could never forget the way she made sure one of her best friends found me on tour several states away! i’ve met jilleen twice now…most recently when she gave me the terribly sad news about your mom.
please send me your address here…my publisher will give it to me.
It started out with my desire for a beach house. I couldn’t afford one (yet) but I decided I could decorate my current abode to look like one. For inspiration I scoured book stores for paperback books with covers depicting scenes of the sea. My intention was to remove the covers, frame them in plexiglass frames and display them on one wall. I discovered your books with the beach-related theme and loved each of them. I found myself reading all the others and loving them too! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us!
Ann Leach, co-author
Goal Sisters: Live the Life You Want With a Little Help
dear ann,
thanks for letting me know…
i believe that we all have our own inner beach house…and thanks to your inspiring ideas, we can see them framed on the wall.
Luanne:
I absolutely love your books but Firefly Beach is my favorite. I just reread it for the third time recently and I thought that I had read another book that involved Joe’s Brother Sam. What other books mention the characters of Joe & Caroline? Thank you so very much!
Love the books, I think True Blue is my favorite. I was visiting your site to see your book tour schedule but can’t find anything. It would be most helpful to know where you will be & when.
Thanks,
Susan
dear susan,
thank you!
those characters recur in several of my “hubbard’s point” books, but not in a really “top billing” way… the exception would be “safe harbor,” which is about sam falling in love… i really do love sam.
as for my tour info, it’s posted here on the site just before a new publication. i’ll be in florida for two dates during april, (sarasota on 4/11 http://www.sarasotanewsandbooks.com/ and jacksonville 4/20 http://www.muchadoaboutbooks.com/home.cfm ) and then out on tour for “what matters most” this summer. check back here then, and i’m sure we’ll have the dates up.
I was so thrilled to meet you at Walmart in Waterford when you signed my copy of your new book, The Edge of Winter. I could not put the book down and I just finished it. It was beautiful and I hated to have it end. I wish you could write a sequel to it because I loved the characters and the way you described the different birds and the Rhode Island sea shore. Looking forward to your next new book — keep up the good work.
Dot
dear dot,
thank you… i love those characters, and i love the rhode island shore. who knows? maybe they’ll return some day. it’s certainly possible; i’ll have to listen for them calling me back.
as for birds…the spring migration is slowly starting. i’m very excited.
Dear Ms. Rice,
I was really enjoying reading “The Perfect Summer” until I came upon the vulgar words. I see no point in a 12 year old girl using the “F” word. It was already clear how many problems she had. I make it a point not to read authors who use this word in their stories. I’m sorry that I have to add you to that list. Your story is good and well written, but as a Christian I need to be careful what I put into my head since it affects the spirit. I have a long way to go in that area, but this is something I can control. I found it interesting in reading some of you web page that another lady also objects to the use of the word. It is not common usage in most people’s circle and when you hear it that is a person you don’t want around.
Yours truly,
Charlene
dear charlene,
my characters are far from perfect—just like the author…
we make our way through this life, making mistakes and looking for answers. for me, and for my characters (because they come from me,) redemption is in the journey. and sometimes in the language…an expression of pain and desolation. or of joy and exuberance. i try to listen to how people talk, all kinds of people, and put it on the page.
i’m sorry to lose you as a reader and wish you the best…
Are you going to be in the Michigan area? Or is your schedule on the web site and I just haven’t found it? I would love to come and see you and hear you speak at a conference.
Thank you,
Brenda
dear brenda,
i always love visiting michigan…
i’m not sure what the summer tour will bring, but please check back here.
thank you!
I just finished reading your book Stone Heart. It was such a powerful book. You wrote about a hideous subject of domestic violence and the damages that can occur with great sensitivity. I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this book. I have read almost every book that you have written and this one and Follow the Stars Home have been my favorites. I look forward to reading your newest book, The Edge of Winter.
Linda
dear linda,
thank you very much. the subject of domestic violence has become important to me. it can sneak up on women; it doesn’t always start with a fist. sometimes it begins with a lie, or with a subtle insult. the strongest woman can lose herself, trying to figure out what will make him happier, what will make him stop. sometimes you’re right in the middle of it, and you don’t realize—you think it’s not happening to you because you don’t have any bruises or scars.
some abusers—like edward in “summer’s child” and “summer of roses” and like gordon in “stone heart”—have very sad stories of their own…rough childhoods… a caring woman can get drawn in, trying to help and heal him…not realizing that it’s just a trap.
to anyone who’s reading this, who thinks she might be in an abusive relationship: if you think it, you probably are. there are great resources out there—nationally, and in your own community. don’t be afraid to be honest with yourself, to become aware… it’s scary at first, but awareness will save your spirit and life.
Hey Luanne,
Just letting you know that I have all of your books except for one and I love them all. You are the greatest author in the world! When I pick up one of your books I don’t want to put it down until I have finished it! I am looking for your book Secrets of Paris. I am unable to find it anywhere. I need this one so that I will have all of them. I anxiously await for What Matter Most to come out in June! Thanks for a great read every time!
Dana
Mountaire Farms of NC
dear dana,
thank you! i’m so honored to know you think that…
“secrets of paris” will be back someday…i’m sure of it.
meanwhile, thank you for reading my other novels!
Dear Luanne:
I just started “The Edge of Winter” today. Took it to the hospital with me while my Mom had to have a procedure. I have not gotten much done today because I cannot peel myself away from the book.
J.
Lubec, Maine
dear j,
i know and love lubec! i’ve walked out by the lighthouse—one very snowy day in february quite a few years ago. and i passed through last summer, on a trip to new brunswick. thank you for getting in touch (i hope you received the book.) i wish your mother all the best for a speedy recovery…
Dear Luanne,
It is no lie when i tell you that “Stone Heart” changed my life. I dont know if you have ever heard about high school Speech teams, more commonly known as Forensics, however, I really need to share this with you. I am 19 years old and about to graduate high school and this year on the speech team I switched from the category of Humor to drama. (in speech we take a cutting from a book and make it into a 10 minute speech where one person performs all of the characters, kind of like a one person play). Anyways, i wasnt sure i wanted to switch into drama until i read Stone Heart. And after i finished it i know that i had to- that i had to share Sophie’s story with other people. Trhought the course of playing the role of Sophie, i learned so much. The speech became real to me. Sophie is no longer a fictional character, she is part of me. I know this sounds wierd but i really do now have a connection with her that will never leave me. Sophie’s pain is by far the most powerful pain I’ve ever felt. She was so vulnerable, so helpless. But i love the way her character developed. She went from defending Gordon to feeling so remorseful that she had to…
Every aspect of that novel makes you think. What could Sophie have been? The line that really gets me is “I had choices… maybe if i had proved to him that the more you love, the more love you have- THIS would never have happened”.
She still blames herself… but what could she have become? I now have a special spot in my heart for mothers who lose their children. that scene is so beautiful when she says “its unimaginable how tiny she was, hardly like a baby at all.” It makes me emotional every time i think about it.
The scene where Gordon throws the Stone angel against the wall is so terrifying, but I felt so hard for Sophie… oh my gosh. Every scene was emotional and strong and made me feel Sophie’s pain. You are a phenomenal writer, and I want you to know that Stone Heart has made me a better person, it made me stronger, more emotional, and a better actress.
I was wondering if there was a movie made about Stone Heart, because i would love to see it. If there is not… i strongly encourage you to push for one because that is a story that other people should know, and if youre looking for a Sophie … hah well I’d always be willing. Thank you for writing that novel, it gave me lots of success on the Speech team, but it really did change me. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am anxious to hear what you have to say!
Thank you again,
Christine
dear christine,
i am so moved by this message. thank you on so many different levels… you sound like an exceptional young woman. to be able to read “stone heart,” by far my darkest novel, and come away with such insight and compassion—that’s very impressive. as i read through your notes on the book, and your connections and interpretations, i feel that my own understanding of sophie is deepened—and i created her in the first place!
the character of sophie was, and is, both difficult and special for me. she is a very complicated woman; writing her, i learned so much about how life isn’t so easily divided into black and white, good and evil… people make hard choices, and then must live with the consequences. we’re shaped by our own experiences…and choices. i’m very impressed that someone as young as you understands that already.
i wish you all the best—as you finish your senior year, and continue on. you’ll do something wonderful in life, christine. you already have.
I just finished reading your newest book. I’ve read (make that devoured) all of your books, but this has to be the best yet!
Thank you,
Laurie
dear laurie,
thank you!
that means a lot to me.
I was directed to your website by a friend of Garland Jeffrey’s about your blog review of his show. The pictures you have up there are great and I was wondering if it would be okay to use one of them in Town & Village, a community newspaper.
if you want I could list the photo credit as your website, or just your name if you prefer.
Thanks.
Sabina
definitely feel free to use the pictures, sabina!
go garland…
what a great show that was.
I just finished THE EDGE OF WINTER and this is an absolutely marvelous book. I have been touched on so many levels. I can see why you are so proud of this book. The release of this book is perfect timing with all that our country is facing at this time. I am so grateful for you and the wonderful gift of your writing that you continue to share with all of us. You certainly are making the world a better place and helping to open the hearts of all.
Many blessings for you,
Bev
(Rio Rancho, New Mexico)
dear bev,
thank you for sharing your thoughts here. i’m very glad to know you felt touched by “the edge of winter.” it came from a very deep place, having grown up with a father who went to war.
wishing you all the best, and sending blessings your way…
Hi Luanne,
A mutual friend of ours Peg H from CT gave me “The Edge of Winter” for my birthday (lucky me) it is one of the BEST books that I could not put it down. I stated it on friday and finished it on saturday. I could not put it down and hated for it to end. This is a must read for any Luanne Rice fan. Now I am reading Crazy in Love. I also loved so much Silver Bells and wished that it would have been on tv again this past christmas season.I have to leave the books at home or I’ll never get any work done. Hopefully I will get to a book signing this summer with Peg H.
My Best,
Dona
West Hartford,CT.
dear dona,
i’m so glad to know you’re enjoying my novels, and that peg started you off! please thank her for me.
hope to see you at a book signing next summer…
Ms. Rice,
I just finished reading,” Angels all Over Town”. I love your books. It transports me home to our shoreline home in Clinton, Connecticut where my husband, Tom and I raised our sons. When they were in high school at Xavier, I worked at Gladeview and cared for your mother, Lucille. She was a special woman and I feel honored to have known her. Our four sons are now out of college and are fine men. We now make our home in beautiful Palm Desert, California. You see, I am still caring for moms, this time my mom. I read all your books. Thank you for such wonderful writing with such “heart’”. My family is “my” life and love.
Sincerely,
Judy
dear judy,
oh, thank you so much for writing. you bring me back to such an intense time in our lives. my mother spent the end of her life at gladeview, and i feel so grateful to you and everyone who cared for her. you’re right, she was special…she cared about every single person she met, and wanted to get to know you all. thank you for all you did, and continue to do… i’m wishing the best for your mom—and for you and the rest of your family.
I’ve just finished reading “The Edge of Winter.” Your books are educational, beautifully told, interesting without resorting to explicit love scenes, as so many authors do.
I laugh, I cry & lost when I finish them.
I anxiously await your next book.
Sincerely yours,
Carmen
dear carmen,
thank you. i’m glad you find the books educational.
i learn so much when i’m writing them…
doing research and writing, i feel i get to experience many different ways of living and being…
Hello Ms. Rice,
I recently started reading your books and so far have read Beach Girls and Dance with Me. I love them both! I went on your website today and now I cannot decide which to buy next!
Do you ever come to Knoxville, TN or anywhere near for booksignings???
Karrie
dear karrie,
i’m so glad you enjoyed those books…and i hope you’ve found another one to read!
i love tennessee. sometimes i do signings in knoxville, nashville, and memphis; we’ll post tour information here on the site.
I just finished “The Edge of Winter”. Truly one of the most delectable books I’ve ever read. Every tiny morsel was to be savored. I had to take breaks in my reading, just so I did not finish the book so soon. Loved every minute of it. A new topic, yet the tears and feelings that you pull of are so real!!!! Absolutely wonderful , wonderful book!!!!! I so look foward to your next release as you are genuinely my favorite!!!! Thank you for so much pleasure. I would so much more read a wonderful book than most anything!!! Thanks again!!!
wow, thank you…
i’m so glad to know you feel that way.
i’ll get back to writing the new one right now…
Ms. Rice:
Thanks for your recent visit to Thurber House. Your reading and Q&A session was great.
I love the sensitivity expressed in your writing. Will your fans ever have the pleasure of experiencing any non fiction writing from you?
Shirley A
dear shirley,
thank you for making me feel so welcome! i had a wonderful visit to columbus ohio, especially thurber house.
yes…i often think about writing nonfiction as well. for now, i do that on my blog, almost daily… thanks for asking.
If I understand right, a follow up book after Sandcastles will be called What Matters Most.. Could you please let me know if I am correct and if so, when it will be released. I fjust finished reading Sandcastles and am anxious to know what else happened. I really, really enjoyed it. Thanks for being such a great story teller.
Dovergrammyjo
dear dover grammy jo,
yes, “what matters most” picks up where “sandcastles” leaves off, and tells the story of bernie and tom. if you haven’t already visited our wonderful “what matters most” page here at my website, i hope you will…
thank you for your kind words. they mean a lot.
Hi - This is the first novel I have read from you and I really enjoyed it. I have picked it for our book club selection this coming month. Where can I find some discussion questions on this and the sequel Summer of Roses to use for our meeting?
Also, I’d love to know where your inspiration for the characters and plot for Summer’s Child came from? I loved the twist of having the husbands connected. The ending was abrupt, so I am glad to know the characters are continued in Summer of Roses.
Sincerely:
Becky
dear becky,
thank you. the themes of those two summer books are very close to my heart; i know they’ve resonated with many women. i don’t believe there’s a reading group guide for either of them, but i would hope that reading them would lead women to talk about their own lives, a discussion about how everyone deserves love and respect.
the issue of domestic violence is important to me. lily (the main character in both novels) understands that so well. sometimes people think you have to have bruises or broken bones to ask for help. that’s not true. words and even the silent treatment can be the most damaging of all—to a woman’s spirit.
thank you in advance to your book club for reading my books…
Dear Ms Rice,
I am visiting Madison, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, areas and it is so fantastic to be able to actually be in the areas which I had imagined while reading your books. Living in the Houston TX area most of my adult life, it is really great to be able to be back home in the Northeast and be able to see up close and personal things that I only had been able to see with my mind.
My granddaughter, who is 16, is experiencing her first snowstorm today(03/16/07).
To say that I enjoy reading you books would be an understatement; my youngest daughter-in-law loves to read them as well.
Thank you for writing them.
Carol
dear carol,
what a great first snowstorm for your granddaughter! please congratulate her for me. it was quite a spectacular weather system; i enjoyed it so much, i wrote about it… (just go to my blog, here at my website, if you want to see.)
i’m so glad to know i’ve been able to bring you “home” from texas to the northeast through my novels…that means so much to me.
Dear Luanne,
I got a chance to look at your website today and it is very impressive, you are a real writer, which is amazing in and of itself. I will be sure to get one of your books, which would be the best introduction? I hope you are well and staying indoors.
Truly,
Chloe
dear chloe,
good to hear from you. well, i always feel closest to my most recent novel, so possibly “the edge of winter.” or you could read the one jayce and i are adapting—“dream country.”
i hope your move to california went smoothly…best to you out there!
Hi Ms. Rice,
I am a new reader of yours and am reading “Beach Girls,” love it! Can’t put it down. I am originally from your same area of Connecticut, having lived there all my life until 6 1/2 years ago, miss it terribly.
I plan to read all your books and am very interested in getting a list of all the points of area you reference to that you have changed the names if possible please list by book.
Like Hubbards Point I think is Niantic
Thank you so much for bringing me home if only in my mind and heart!
Sincerely,
Donna
dear donna,
it always makes me so happy to hear that readers connect with the locations in my novels…since you come from that same magical part of connecticut, you know the beauty of the beaches and marshlands, the bays and rivers.
hubbard’s point is based on a real beach area…just west of niantic. you were close! i often refer to niantic as “silver bay” in my books, old lyme as “black hall,” essex as “hawthorne.” now i’ve given you the secret decoder ring…hope it helps.
First off I want to say I love your books so much! I just finished reading Follow the Stars Home and realized the ending of it was the beginning of another one of your books and I can’t remember which one. Can you help?
Thanks so much! Keep up the good work.
Maribeth
Wickford, RI
hi maribeth,
thank you! i love wickford…what a beautiful town.
as for your question…”follow the stars home” is not linked to any of my other novels. it takes place along the connecticut shoreline like many of my other books (although some, including “the edge of winter,” do take place in rhode island…) perhaps the locale reminds you of something else i wrote?
Hello Ms. Rice -
When will you be in Sarasota, Florida and how do I get tickets? I read about your visit several weeks ago and can’t seem to find where to buy the tickets. My friend and I are big fans and would like to attend. Thanks for any help you can give!
Jackie
hi jackie,
i will be in sarasota at the palm literary society on wednesday, april 11. here’s the website:
http://www.sarasotanewsandbooks.com/events.php
hope to see you there!
Ms. Rice —
I love your books and I have seen “Beach Girls” and “Follows the Stars Home” in movie form:
My question is what other books were followed by movies and where can I purchase them?
Thank you so much for your time.
Karen
Bakersfield CA
dear karen,
thank you so much! the films of my novels are listed at
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0723494/
most are available wherever fine videos/dvds are sold…
they also rerun on tv…
Dear Luanne,
I have just started reading your books, and I am enjoying them. (I don’t much care for the use of the f word, however….)
The first book I read was “Summer of Roses.” When I read “Summer’s Child,” I realized I should have read that one first. Now I have “The Perfect Summer.” Is there an order the books should be read in, to keep continuity with the stories? I’d love it if you’d let me know.
Thank you.
Kathy
Spanish Fork, Utah
dear kathy,
writing dialogue is an interesting enterprise. i try to create characters who are as real and vivid as possible. sometimes the action and language can be intense, but always within the context of the story. fiction contains conflict…it’s more powerful to see what’s bright in life by posing it next to what’s dark…i suppose that could, depending on your point of view, include language…
as for the order of books…most of my novels are not linked. the two you mentioned are an exception. also, the forthcoming “what matters most” follows “sandcastles.”
thank so you much for reading my books, and for writing me.
Although this was a good novel, I can really see how far you have come as a writer because in my opinion it can’t stand in the shadow of your “beach” novels…maybe again because I am from Old Lyme, maybe because your plots and characters are so much tighter nowadays. I am looking forward to both Sandcastles and The Edge of Winter.
I again ask that you consider a novel about the farming community in Lyme and Old Lyme…I know you did one on the apple farm, but this would be about dairy farming and the ways that they are rapidly now disappearing. I know some very interesting characters that could be involved in such a story.
Blessings to you and continue your wonderful stories…
Tina
dear tina,
thank you for your words, and also for the suggestion…
i really appreciate your interest in my work; there’s nowhere on earth more inspiring than old lyme!
Luanne,
Just went and bought your new book today, can’t wait to start reading it!!!
I love all of your books.
Jeanne
dear jeanne,
thank you!
that means a lot.
I HAVE READ A FEW OF YOUR BOOKS AND WOULD LIKE TO ASK A REQUEST OF YOU.
YOU MAKE MENTION IN SEVERAL OF YOUR BOOKS ABOUT FAVORITE FOODS, ETC OF YOUR CHARACTERS.
I CANNOT REMEMBER SPECIFICS EXCEPT ANGELS ALL OVER TOWN, WHICH I BOUGHT BECAUSE IT WAS
ABOUT SISTERS AND BECAUSE I HAVE EIGHT SISTERS MYSELF WHO ARE ALL VERY CLOSE….
YOU MENTION THAT SOME PERSON’S FAVORITE FOOD WAS “VEAL” ………. MS. RICE, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN
A VIDEO OR ACTUAL SITUATION OF HOW VEAL IS MADE? PLEASE EITHER LOOK IT UP OR ASK SOMEONE
WHO CAN TELL YOU, BUT I ASK THAT YOU DO SOME TYPE OF RESEARCH ABOUT IT.
VEAL IS MADE BY
TAKING VERY YOUNG CALVES AWAY FROM THEIR MOTHERS, PUTTING THEM IN A CAGE TYPE FENCING
WHICH PREVENTS THEM FROM ANYTING BUT STANDING UP… THEY ARE NOT FED PROPER DIETS, CANNOT
LAY DOWN AND ARE FORCED TO LIVE IN THEIR EXCREMENTS UNTIL THEY ARE SLAUGHTERED. THIS IS INHUMANE AND
TOTALLY AGAINST NATURE. MANY STATES AND RESTAURANTS HAVE BANNED VEAL AND SO SHOULD ALL
OF THE HUMANE RACE. I ASK YOU TO BAN IT FROM YOUR BOOKS……….
I AM NOT A VEGETARIAN BUT I MAKE IT A POINT NOT TO EAT MEATS WHICH ARE RAISED INHUMANLY, SLAUGHTERED
INHUMANLY AND OR SUPPORT FARMS/FACTORIES WHICH TORTURE ANIMALS IN THE PROCESS…. I HAVE NOT
EATEN A CHICKEN IN YEARS AND ONLY BUY EGGS AND MILK AND MEAT WHICH IS HARVESTED FROM ANIMALS WHO
HAVE FREEDOM FROM PENS, HOUSING, ANTIBIOTICS, HARMONES AND OTHER CRUELTIES.
AND WHILE WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT, CHECK OUT THE INHUMANE FORCE FEEDING DONE TO DUCKS AND GEESE
IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING FOIE GRAS…. WHICH HAS ALSO BEEN BANNED BY LAW IN SOME STATES, AND IN
A LOT OF RESTAURANTS.
YOUR CONSIDERATION TO THESE TWO MATTERS WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED….
thank you from a reader,
Jean
Nashville, Tennessee
dear jean,
you’re right.
i wrote angels when i was young; now i’m a vegetarian.
my best to you…
I anticipate your new book as I read what takes place in it and how you lost your father at a young age - I lost mine at 19. Thanks so much for sharing your characters, settings and life with us. Sincerely,
Linda
dear linda,
i’m so sorry to know you lost your father when you were so young.
it’s hard to go through life without a dad…i often wish i could talk to mine, and that i could have gotten to know him as an adult.
it’s my belief that our fathers are watching over us…
i’m thinking of you.
Dear Luanne,
I just got your e-mail and read your letter on why you wrote it and now I really can’t wait to get the book and read it. Your description of your Dad and the “green shades” brings back memories. Growing up in Vermont during WWII I remember my dad being an “air raid” warden who would go out at night with other men from the town (my Dad was 4-F) to do their share in patrolling and making sure that all the houses had their shades pulled, as you know being so close to NYC and Boston and Hartford made those of us in the area prime targets especially that in our area all the machine factories made materials for bombs, planes or uniforms and combat boots. I can’t wait to read your book. I think you are the best author. All your novels have such beautiful stories. I really think this will be my favorite, too.
Love getting your e-mails and updates also.
Lorraine
Now transplanted in Florida and it’s cold here too. LOL
dear lorraine,
thank you for resonating with the green blackout shades…really brings back memories for me. “the edge of winter” was based on so many of those…memories, stories, history. i’ve been blogging about some details i couldn’t include in the novel; it’s been a very powerful experience.
i’m so glad you enjoy the books, and that you like getting my emails. thank you.
I was wondering if you have any books that will be turned into a movie soon?
Brenda
hi brenda,
there are a few things in the works…
i’ll blog about details as soon as i know them.
thanks!
Thanks so much for the e-mail on your new book, Edge Of Winter. I can’t wait to start reading it. I will let you know if it is one of my favorites of all your books. Of course I love them all but I have two favorites, Dream County and Home Fires.
Have a great day.
Julie
dear julie,
thank you!
(edge happens to be one of my favorites…)
This is my first time to visit your web-site—why I haven’t thought of it before is beyond me as I absolutely love your books! I get excited when I see you have a new book coming out. I just recently saw through my book club that you do have a new one, The Edge of Winter, and I can’t wait to get it! I so loved Beach Girls and loved the Lifetime movie too! Your books are so enjoyable to read and I always instantly fall in love with your characters.
Thank You,
Amy
Hazel Green, AL
dear amy,
welcome to the site!
thank you so much for your kind words. they really mean a lot to me… i’m glad you enjoy my novels, and also that you liked the movie of “beach girls.”
my characters thank you for falling in love with them!
Dear Luanne,
We have just chosen one of your books, Angels ALL Over Town, to read for our book club. Is there a list of discussion questions that we can use during our meeting? Thank you for your time.
Kathy
dear kathy,
my publisher has posted discussion questions at: http://www.randomhouse.com/features/luannerice/newreleases_book2.html
thank you for choosing “angels” to read, and please say hi to your book group for me!
I met you two years ago at RJ Julia in Madison and wonder if you have any relatives that grew up in Hartford, namely, Agnes Rice mother of Mary Lou and Jimmy Rice; they lived in the south end of Hartford and had an aunt named Doll King. I’m from the same area and just wondered if you were related to them. Just bought your latest book; especially enjoyed the ones that are set in Hubbards’s Point as I spent many summers there as a child.
Joan
hi joan,
yes, my father’s family is from the south end of hartford. his father was thomas f. rice, and was a hartford policeman. i still have relatives in the area. i’m so glad you enjoy my “hubbard’s point” books…many happy rice memories at that beach!
Dear Luanne Rice,
First I want to tell you how much I love reading your books. I’m reading Summer Light right now.
I cant pick a favorite book, they are all my favorite, But If I really had to pick one it would be Dream Country. I just had twins 2 months ago. One boy and One girl. Brooke and Nathan. It would be really cool if you wrote some more books like Dream Country.
I just went to the book store and bought Angels All Over Town. Ive tried to read other books, but I just cant get into them and just fall in love with the stories like I do with your books.
Thank you so much for making reading so enjoyable.
Keep the wonderful books coming. I’ll be reading them!
- Jodi S.
dear jodi,
congratulations on your twins!
i’m so glad to know you enjoy my books. “dream country” is very dear to my heart…
take care.
I just attended your book signing at Super Walmart in Waterford, Ct. I’m not usually one of those people who seek out celebrities for the autograph but today was the exception. I have always enjoyed your books and anxiously await each new title; I really went to have you sign my book to say THANKS for being able to write wonderful stories and share them with us. They bring such happiness to those of us who love to read.We have had some sadness in the last few weeks and today was a lovely surprise to be able to tell you, personally, thanks for sharing your talents with people who love books.
Thanks again.
Tina
dear tina,
thank you so much for coming to see me. that was a great day, and i loved meeting you and all my other readers. i’m sorry for your sadness, and hope it lessens…
i posted some photos of the event on my blog…
Hi Luanne
I started reading you while I was in a hurricane so that my thoughts of the wind and the rain and being so scared would go away for awhile and it did just for a while but I continued to read you and loved every book I have read and picked every one since thank you for the great reads enjoy every one
Sunshine
dear sunshine,
thank you for reading me in the hurricane! i love storms.
Hello,
I am a great fan of yours and love your books. I just started Angels All over Town and am wondering about the name “Cavan”. That was my maiden name and it is not a common name. Also my Dad’s middle name was Camden.
Both of my parents have passed away and when I saw the last name of the sisters in your book I thought perhaps we might have a connection somewhere
Just curious.
Barbara
Little Rock, AR
dear barbara,
ah, character names. one of my favorite topics, and one i can’t always answer… choosing a character name is, for me, extremely meaningful, mystical, and byzantine. there are always layers of secret meaning built in…sometimes my readers can figure out the puzzle, and sometimes my sisters can, but often i’m the only one…
una cavan…”una” is irish, from the latin “one.” it was inspired by oona o’neill chaplin for deep and dark personal reasons… cavan comes from county cavan in ireland, where i once had an extremely romantic, literary life-changing experience.
I wanted to thank you for another fabulous book. I just finished Sandcastles and I loved it. I grew up in Old Lyme [I lived in Old Lyme Shores and then on Grassy Hill Rd up by Rogers Lake]. I still have an aunt who lives in New London. I live in Portland Oregon now, but your books take me back to my roots! I particularly enjoyed this book because of the Irish connections.
Thank you so much!
Peg
dear peg,
i’m so glad i could send a little connecticut your way… it’s such a beautiful part of the world, right? i know the areas you speak of so well… portland is lovely, too. i have a friend who was just telling me about a little hidden beach town on the oregon coast that makes me want to go there right now.
i’m glad you enjoyed the irish connection, too…
slainte,
luanne
I read angels all over town and had to share it with my sisters. I have two, both younger. my sister’s and I all share are own funny little language and secret’s. After reading your book, I could tell that you also came from the sisters. club.
Isn’t it funny that no matter how many people come and go in our lives, our sisters are a constant. No one else can understand our twisted sense of humor like we do.
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your take on sister’s. I’ll look forward to reading your other novels.
thanks so much
jacinda
dear jacinda,
totally! yes, the sisters’ club. i’m a charter member. my mother used to say “you’ll have many friends, but you’ll only have two sisters.” one of my first published works was a short story called “july.” it was about three sisters, and one of them said to the other, in awe and amazement: “we came out of the same stomach.” and then grew up under the same roof… it’s an amazing bond.
Hi,
does summer of roses & summer’s child go together? which one do i need to read first I love your books .
Thanks,
Lisa
hi lisa,
yes, they do go together… i wrote “summer’s child” first, so i suppose you might want to read it first. but i write all my books with the sense that they can stand on their own…you don’t have to read one to understand the other.
thank you for your words…
I have a weird system of reading — My daughter suggested reading your novels so I am going to begin….my little weird system is I must read them in the exact order they were written, 1st novel, 2nd novel,……where do I find such listing. Thank you in advance. My daughter really enjoys your books, she is a new mother and read them all through her bed-ridden pregnancy!!! You helped make the “nesting” more relaxing. Thank you again.
Kelly’s Mom & Baby Chloe’s Grandma
dear kelly’s mom and chloe’s grandma,
i’m so glad your daughter introduced you to me!
i just posted a list of my novels…just scroll down a few questions, and you’ll find them in descending order…
thanks for asking…
Hi Luanne
Have just finished “Cloud Nine” and what an emotional journey I have had. At times, I was sobbing so much that I had to close the book and compose myself. This story of yours touched me so - my dearest and most precious friend, and my sister-in-law has recently passed away from Cancer and she had such an emotional and painful 6 months. She has 3 children, twin teenage daughters and a son and it has been such a devastating time for all of us.
I really believe that somehow She has sent me a sign, through your book ( we were/are avid readers ) that she is OK. Thank you from the bottom of my heart - for writing with so much tenderness and compassion - and for allowing me to shed tears that I have been keeping inside, trying to be brave and strong for everyone around.
Regards and God Bless
Mel
Durban South Africa
dear mel,
i’m so sorry about your sister-in-law. i’ll hold her close in my thoughts.
thank you for telling me about her, and about the connection you felt through “cloud nine.”
blessings to you…
Luanne,
You are a godsend in your writing. I am a single woman going on 30…I have read all but five of your books. Everytime I complete one it becomes my new favorite.
I am a struggling addict. Four years ago saw ” Safe Harbor” in a store. At that time I was in Florida needing to get home to Maine. Lets just say the caption ” Safe Harbor” was something I truly needed at that time. Your Writing has grounded and soothed me when I was in sheer desperation of escape. Being from New England allowed me to relate to alot of the places your characters had been. I just finished “Dance with Me” and have moved on to “The Secret Hour”.
I often find myself underlining phrases from your books. Again I relate to them dearly. Taking myself into your stories may have possibly saved me from moments of chaos. I don’t read anything else. No other books have taken to me the way yours have. To me your stories have opened doors and windows that I may not had had the courage to face. I look forward to your new releases.
Looking over your website today for the first time. Enjoy your view of the Pacific Ocean. Lord knows it is cold up here in the tundra of Maine. Ha.Ha.
Thanks Again, Luanne.
Jennie
dear jennie,
thank you for your note… i’m glad to know my books have soothed you. some of my characters are recovering alcoholics and addicts…in fact, i dedicated “firefly beach” to bill and lois, bob and anne…the founders of alcoholics anonymous and al-anon.
stay warm up in maine—and keep your spirit warm too.
keep on keeping on.
Dear Ms. Rice,
Would you consider doing a writing workshop anytime in the future? I really enjoy your writing style and feel that I could learn a great deal from you.
On a side note, I know from reading your blog that your father owned a typewriter store. Last weekend on the Today Show they featured the Boston Typewriter Orchestra. Yes, they actually make music using typewriters. Maybe you already know about them. They were intersting to listen to.
Thank you in advance for answering my question.
Sincerely,
Katalin
dear katalin,
i’ll be speaking at the maui writers conference from august 31-september 3…and sometimes on book tour i focus some of my talks on writing…
thanks for letting me know about the boston typewriter orchestra! who knew? but i can well believe it… my mother was also a writer, and when i was a little girl, the sound of her typing stories late into the night was my lullaby.
Hi Luanne,
I was wondering how many of your books are now movies I have some but want to get them all. I have read your books and the one you wrote SUMMERS CHILD was great.
the day I read it my grand daughter was in open heart surgery with tetrology of fallot ( TOF)
I had never heard of it before then and was so surprise to read this in your book any way it was great and you are a EXCELLENT writer I can’t wait for the edge of winter
Thanks
Robin of indianapolis in
dear robin,
i hope your granddaughter is doing well.
thank you for your words about my books. i’m glad you enjoy them.
here’s a link to a listing of all my books that are now movies: imdb
Hi, I love all of your books - have read and enjoyed each and every one. I own all of them so I can read them again and again.
Sadly, I cannot find a copy of Secrets of Paris to buy. Any idea if and when it will be re-released. Any news would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Paula
hi paula,
i don’t have an exact date… i’m sure we’ll announce it on my website here, or through the mailing list. thank you for asking, and i hope it will be soon…
Dear Luanne,
I am a new Luanne Rice reader and am so amazed at the connections I have had with your characters. My first read was Summers Child and I fell in love with the realness of each character. The good, the bad, the ugly and unfortuanate….. that is life and through it all true love prevails . I know. I fell in love with a man who was paralyzed from a car accident. We met at a time when both of us had huge voids in our lives. He with his new life in a wheelchair and myself, a sudden life without my dad, my best friend. I am the oldest of four. Two sisters and one brother. We have been close all our lives and with our fathers sudden death at 49, I took on a very adult role to be the rock. I have a sister in an abusive relationship, so Summers Child touches home there too.
Well, I was blessed to receive the sequel to Summers Child as a gift (thank you) and felt complete after reading Summer Roses. Yes, I’m a bit of a romantic and love the happy endings. I am also a realist that has been born with a positive outlook on life and believe that we have alot more control of our destiny than we realize.
I truly believe there are no coincidences. Just two nights ago I was in the drug store picking up some items and decided to scan the book/magazine section for a particular magazine I am on an obsessive search for and right before my eyes, your book Angels All Over Town almost jumped off the rack and hit me. I read the exerpt and bought it instantly. I started reading it on my commute from Long Island to the City and am just amazed at the familiarity it has with my relationship (even the personalities) of my sisters and I. My father always called us his angels. Now he is ours.
Everyone who knows me personally and all that I go through with my family are just amazed that I don’t have a book (or two or three). It’s really crazy, but that is life! Once accepted, its alot easier. Ironically, as we speak, my mother has left her abusive relationship and is driving from Northern California to Texas to start over. She left while he was away with all her things and a note.
Well, I know I took up alot of your time, I just wanted to let you know how very special you have been to me through the few books I have read. I plan on and look forward to reading more. One book at a time. You are a wonderful person Luanne. Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful real stories with us, your fans.
Actually, I do write. I have some poems and a book of affirmations I have composed. It’s quite personal and geared toward recovery. In the right time I will publish it. I believe in journaling, so I must have a dozen journals. My father was an artist and writer so it has been passed down somewhat. I used to express my art through dancing and acting, but through the pains of life have found a love of expressions through writing.
Good luck on your movie and the journey it takes you on. What a beautiful chapter in your life this time is.
I don’t expect you to put this on your question and answers site, I just wanted to share my thoughts and gratitude with you.
Thank you for listening.
Sincerely,
Jeni
dear jeni,
i’m always touched to know that readers connect with my work; your letter is very meaningful to me. i’m sorry about your father’s death; i know how hard that is…it sounds as if you’re determined to keep your family ties as strong as ever.
you mention that you “love the happy endings.” i always think of my endings as optimistic…which is how i try to approach life. nothing is every tied up neatly, and often things turn out differently than we wish they would. but i believe that people’s best selves come out during hard times, and can guide them (us) to outcomes even better than what they (we) might have imagined.
best to you…
Dear Ms Rice-
I love your new website! I happened upon it this morning and felt compelled to write you an email to tell you how much I love your writing. Eight months ago I was pregnant with my son, on bedrest due to complications and miserable. My mother brought me a
stack of books and told me they were some of her favorites. Included in that pile were three of yours. I read Summer’s Child and was hooked. I called my mom when I finished reading it and asked her to bring me every book she had that you wrote. To say the least, Ms Rice, your books helped me get through that challenging time! Here I am, 8 months later with a healthy baby boy and a great collection of your stories (and sometimes an unhappy husband because once I start one of your books I cannot put it down!!).
You are such an amazing writer and I love that you share that gift with all of us devoted readers! So, thank you!!!
I recommend your books all the time and am constantly having people tell me how much they love your books. Keep up the good work!! -
Corin
dear corin,
thank you for letting me know my books helped. that means a lot to me. i’m glad to know your baby boy is doing well…
keep reading, and thanks again for your kindness.
My mother grew up along the Ohio river and she has the same attachment to it as you do to the ocean —she is a water babie. The first time she saw the ocean she knew you could have two loves and love them both . She said it was like she had always known the ocean. Do you think that there it is something about growing up by water? That it seeps into your soul and makes you part of it,or it part of you?
what a beautiful, poetic question…
i believe that there’s no doubt that my love of the ocean has seeped into my soul. i feel most happy when walking barefoot along the beach or swimming in salt water…
actually, you asked a question very similar to one asked me by usa today. it’s in today’s paper, and you can find it here: usa today q&a
by the way, if your mother is still in ohio, i’ll be at thurber house in columbus on thursday 3/2 and at books & co in dayton on friday 3/3.
Dear Ms. Rice,
Thank you for your wonderful books.I have loved to read all my life my sister took me to the library when i was but a tater tot I fell in love at first sight and its been a romance ever since ,so many books to enjoy.
There is something special about a book that you can’t get from movies or t.v. . You see them in your mind and you are in control of what they look like —I love it.
Your books come to life so easily and they so vibrant ,so full of life .
Thank You.
dear tater tot,
i fell in love with books much the same way you did. saturday mornings at the new britain public library…my mother would get lost in the stacks, and my sisters and i would do the same. you’re lucky to have such a good sister.
i completely share your love of reading. may the romance never end.
thank you for your kind words about my books…
Hi,
Can you tell me when your next book, “What Matters Most,” will be published? Is there a synopsis anywhere?
Thank you,
Susan
hi susan,
“what matters most” will be published july 17, 2007. (olivier’s birthday!)
although the synopsis isn’t out yet…i’ll just tell you that if you read “sandcastles,” you’ll recognize some characters. (although if you didn’t read it, that’s completly fine; you won’t be missing anything.)
Ms. Rice,
A friend of mine has recently introduced me to your books. I owe her big time! I love your books. I’m trying to figure out if there is an order in which they should be read. If so, could you please share it with me?
Thanks
Kim
dear kim,
there’s no particular order at all! just start wherever you find yourself. and please thank your friend for me…
Luanne,
I loved it! (But then, I’ve really enjoyed all of your books, over and over.) Read “Angels” twice straight through, back to back. Do we get to meet these girls again? See how their lives are unfolding a few years down the line. Watch Una grow up, Margo settle into her husband and art interests, Lily come out of the cave of her marriage with Henk? (He’s
a tough one to like.)
In your other books, the characters become like part of the reader’s family, drifting though the pages of successive novels, so we can keep track of them. Will you do this with Una, Margo and Lily in a future story or two?
I miss them already.
Kathryn
Ouray, Colorado
dear kathryn,
thank you for the inspiring thought! i adore una, margo, and lily… i agree with you, that it’s time to see them again. don’t be too surprised if i write about them someday soon. i happen to know what they’re up to…
hello
i just wanted to let you know that i love your books. i am going through a hard break up right now and ‘you’ help keep it off my mind for awhile. i just finished Blue Moon and had a hard time reading through the tears.
thank you so much.
i have collected all the books but i am having a hard time finding Secrets of Paris. is it out of print. if you know of where i can purchase it, please let me know.
thank you for all your stories
carol
albers, il
dear carol,
i’m sorry to hear about what you’re going through. “this too shall pass”—those words might sound impossible right now, but they have given me comfort through hard times, and they’re so true…
thank you for reading my books. “secrets of paris” will be reissued sometime soon…till then, maybe you can find it online, or at a store selling used books.
i hope you feel better soon…
WHEN WILL SANDCASTLES BE OUT IN PAPERBACK?
it will be out on june 26, 2007—danny burns’s birthday, now that i look at it.
thank you!
Luanne
I just wanted to let you know that even though some books are out of print my daughter was able to get every one I was missing on Amazon.com for part I my Christmas gift (the best ever).
I am not sure if you can pass this on or if readers will just read this entry.
Carol
(Waterford ct)
dear carol,
i’m so glad to know your daughter was able to find the books you were missing. right now all but one (secrets of paris) are in print… i’m very happy to know you enjoy reading them. hope to see you at the waterford wal-mart on saturday!
Dear Luanne,
What fun! Thank you also for the beautiful book (The Edge of Winter). We feel honored to have been mentioned. Now I know why the Snowy Owl. You are a love.
Norma and Bill
dear norma and bill,
i love you, too!
all my readers…these people run the 492nd bomb group association, and hosted the amazing reunion i attended last year. they are incredibly special and generous, and i wish my father were still here, so he could know them.
Luanne
me and my mom love your books and own almost all of them. I was wondering if your books go in any certain order?
Also the first book I read of yours was Dream Country and am glad to hear that it’s becoming a movie…it was so touching I just wanted to cry the whole way through it.
Thanks for your time,
Lindsay
dear lindsay,
i’m so glad to know you and your mom enjoy my books. no, they don’t go in any special order. anywhere you want to start!
i cried while writing “dream country” too…it’s a very emotional story. thank you so much for letting me know you liked it.
I’ve just become a fan of your books in the last three years and have read almost all of them. I have just started reading “Angels All Over Town”. I was wondering if I could have a list of your books in the order they were published.
As a young girl, I used to read a lot and then got away from it. Then I went into a Barnes & Noble store about 3 or 4 years ago and picked up “The Perfect Summer” and was hooked ever since. I like them because they are so realistic. They are well written, too. Thanks for the enjoyment.
Jean
dear jean,
nothing could make me happier than knowing one of my books revived your love of reading! i love to read, too.
i just posted a list of my books in answer to another question… scroll down half a page or so, and you should find it.
Hi, Luanne,
I love your books ! But on your website, the only books that actually have descriptions of the story (in my opinion) are Cloud Nine, Home Fires, and Blue moon, the rest just say that you did a good job, etc. I printed out the list with descriptions so I can keep track of the ones I have read. So far I have read 7 and am now reading Dance with Me. I only discovered your books 1 month ago(the most reading I have done in forever !) I found your books in our Critters Thrift Store (all money goes to Priest river Animal rescue) Now, I will have to order the others as I can’t wait for them to dribble in. I was happy that you have “talked” about puppy mills(farms). It is important to get the word out. And I love how in some of your books your characters have “owned” dogs or cats. Have you ever thought of donating part of your earnings to a rescue group?
thanks,
Cathy
—
hi cathy,
i’m glad to know you’re enjoying my books, and that the animal themes resonate with you. i love animals very much and am owned by three cats.
petal in “dream country” is based on an actual dog who suffered similar treatment, and “dream country” is a proud supporter of animal farm foundation.
I am currently reading The Perfect Summer. Imagine my surprise when I came the part where Bay had to go to the hospital for her injury. Her doctor was Dr. Jolaine. That is my first name. I was just wondering if you know a Jolaine. I have never heard it anywhere else in my 53 years.
hi jolaine,
i do in fact have a good friend by that name.
a beautiful name it is!
I was just given my first book of yours and read it and went out and bought another one. I love sequels and wondered if yours follow the same characters and if so, is there a list showing me which ones I should read first.
Thanks,
Pat
hi pat,
i’m so glad to know i have a new reader!
some of my books are linked…not all.
many take place in the same small town…hubbard’s point beach in black hall, connecticut…
it’s not necessary to read them in order…the characters weave in and out of each others’ stories, just as people in real-life small towns do in each other’s lives.
Luanne:
I enjoy your books so much and I am trying to compile a list of all your books. I cant find just a list of books without the cover pictures and couldn’t find anything like that on your website.
Helen
hi helen,
thank you for your interest…here’s the list:

DEAR LUANNE
MY NAME IS TRACIE, I MET YOU AT THE OLD LYME LIBRARY ~2YEARS AGO. I AM THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST WHO WORKS WITH TRAUMA /ACCIDENT PATIENTS. I AM NOT SURE IF YOU RECALL.
I AM WRITING TO YOU TODAY, BECAUSE I HAVE A FRINED WHO IS ACTUALLY LIVING THROUGH PARTS OF YOUR BOOK, SUMMER OF ROSES.
I AM NOT SURE IF YOU HAVE ANY ADVISE FOR HER, BUT AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE, IT IS TRAUMATIC.
dear tracie,
i’m very sorry to hear about your friend. i encourage her, or anyone who feels she is in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship, to call the national domestic violence hotline at 800-799-SAFE or visit their website.
the connecticut shoreline has a particular wonderful resource—domestic violence valley shore services—and the director has told me they take calls from all over the country. they’re “a small office with a huge heart.” their number is 860-399-4300.
everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. i wish that for your friend, and for everyone.
I just wanted to thank you for writing your books. I love to read something you have written and am a great big fan.
I have enjoyed so many of yours. The first one I remember reading was Follow the Stars Home. I loved that and then read some of the others and fell in love with them!!
I am pretty much a shut-in with respiratory problems among many more health crises and I love reading. I have loved to read since I was a child.
I was thinking the other day, my 2nd grade teacher went to the 5th and 6th grade to get me books because I had read everything in the room and need something more challenging. Loved that teacher!
I sure do enjoy reading your books even though I can’t afford to buy them, every once in a while my caregiver will find me books and when I am truly lucky, some of yours will be in there.
I hoard books and have only about 4 of yours. Hope soon to have more.
Keep up the good work. As one of your fans I know we will all be waiting to see what you have written for us next.
Love to you and yours, Lela, West Plains, Mo.
dear lela,
i’m so glad you enjoy my books. your second grade teacher sounds wonderful…she recognized a true reader! thank you for writing to me.
I thought I’d send you a quick note to tell you how much I enjoy your books. I am excited you are co-authoring a script for “Dream Country”. Personally, I think every one of your books would make terrific movies.
Like most of your readers, the mushy stuff is good, but my favorite part of Luanne Rice is the descriptive manner in which you write. Anyone who can create an environment where the reader feels part of the landscape is a good author indeed.
I even tried to call you once just to tell you the same thing. Do you still live by the sea? In fact, now that I think about it, the stories that involve the sea are so calming. Me? I live in the west about 1 hour west of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Wasn’t dream country set in Wyoming?
Have you ever been west? Why have a bookstore and let me know when you might be in the relative area. I would love to own a personally inscribed Luanne Rice Book.
If you have a minute, I’d love to hear from you.
i’m so glad to know you like “dream country.” yes, the novel is set in wyoming, in the wind river mountains… i do live by the sea, but i find the mountains inspiring as well. it’s very fun to be working on the screenplay…
Luanne as a writer I’m quite curious about something. Your books deal with family emotions and usually romance of some kind. However, when I go into a store to purchase them, they are not categorized with Romance novels.
What would you call your books, “Mainstream” “Contemporary” fiction?
Also, about how many words are your books?
A faithful reader
winner of Sandcastles Contest
Jane Younce
dear jane,
i’m terrible about classifying my books…i suppose they’re at least a little of “all of the above.” as for a word count, i’m not sure. but i do know i have about 400 pages of a novel in me at any given time. best wishes for your own work.
Dear Luanne,
I have always wanted to write to you. I have read almost every book you have written and once I start I cannot put them down. Each book brings back my memories of summers spent at Edgelea in Old Lyme, CT. We came from Bristol, CT and I believe my parents bought the cottage up on the hill in 1956 or 1957. I was one of 11 children and to relive my summers reading your novels has warmed my heart. I think we drove the other inhabitants of Edgelea nuts with our 3 cars filled with kids coming out of the luggage space each summer. We couldn’t use the tennis courts until dark….a little hard to become a Chrissie Everett back then!! People next door put up a huge fence to keep us out. We were very well behaved despite what they must have thought.
We used to go to Emerson’s for quick groceries and way out on the road to OLCenter to do the wash. We must have taken up each and every washer….we had to lug them home wet to dry in the air.
Unfortunately, my parents finally had to sell the old, wonderful, beautiful cottage. Whoever bought it knocked it down and built some huge all-glass house blocking everyones’ view.
I now relive my summers through reading your novels which mean a great deal to me. Please keep on writing about “our summer homes” it really brings back those wonderful, wonderful memories.
Stay safe and well. I was very sorry to read of the “Nut Ladie’s ” passing. I think there were too many of us to get in so I never did see her museum.
A devoted fan,
Theresa
dear theresa,
what a wonderful email! i’m so happy to know my books evoke happy memories of your childhood summers. i wanted to be chrissie evert too! thank you for writing.
About a year ago, Ms. Rice was at a book signing at the Groton Public Library in Groton, CT. I had my daughter with me. My daughter’s name is Kyrra, and MS. Rice signed a children’s book that she had with her. My daughter was 10 at the time of the meeting, and as she also aspires to be an author, this was a big thrill for her.
Respectfully,
Donna
dear donna, please tell kyrra i send her my best, and hope she will keep writing. she’s lucky to have a supportive mom!
Luanne,
I have read all of your books, and loved them all. I forget all my troubles, and travel to your part of the country with your characters.
Tonight, I checked out your new website, and the print seemed a “bit small”. It looks to be about an 8 point font, and when you are nearing 60; big is better. Would it be possible to enlarge the print in your newsletters?
Sincerely,
Linda
hi linda,
i’m glad to know you love my novels. i’ll pass your comment about the type along…
Just a note to say thanks. You are by far the best writer I have ever known. I have now all of your books. Thanks to a friend of mine that gave me 4 of them for Christmas last year. I love them all. I have reccommended them to several of my customers. I work for a Chrysler Jeep Service dept and come in contact with many people each. They too have told me what an inspiration your books have been..Please do not quit writing ever. I can’t wait until the next book comes out. Thanks again for the email to let me know.

I just wanted to tell you that I have enjoyed every one of your books, because they always take me on a special journey home to Connecticut or other places in New England. I’m looking forward to your new book….because I spent a lot of time in South County, R.I. when I was in college. Your books always accompany me on vacation or when I have to take a vacation from stress during the school year.
I’m hoping to finally get to my family’s beach house on the Connecticut shore after all of these years of visiting there vicariously through your books.
Please keep writing.
Marilyn
Fairfax, Va.
hi marilyn,
i love south county, and really enjoyed writing “the edge of winter.” i hope you’re able to get to the beach next summer!
Dear Luanne,
I just finished reading your book Angels All Over Town and wanted to tell you how much I loved it. The first book of yours that I read was Summer Light and I have read most of the others since then.
I grew up in Niantic and spent all my summers at McCook Point, Crescent Beach and Black Point and working at my fathers lumber company in Niantic. Fortunately I am old enough so that all my childhood summers were pre Millstone. I love reading your books and thinking of the places that I love so much.
Your books definitely capture the essence of the people and the life back East.
I have found my own version of that place in my life in a tiny beach town in Northern California. If you ever travel to San Francisco you definitely need to visit the Point Reyes, Tomales, Bodega Bay area. It is like stepping back in time to Niantic, East Lyme and Old Lyme in the late 50’s thorugh the early 70’s. It is rural, coastal and a very special place.
I have loved all of your books and thank you for them. I look forward to reading The Edge of Winter.
Best wishes,
Mary
dear mary,
thank you for your words…i’m really touched to know my books bring back so many happy memories. the connecticut shoreline is truly beautiful; i’m glad to know you’ve found an equally lovely place on the pacific.
I was curious as to how you get material for your novels. I met my fiancee on-line and would love to share that experience with you. My name is also Luan but spelled differently. I just turned 60 this month. John and I are to be married on 2/18 after a two year engagement. He was working in the Bush of Alaska and I live here in Texas. It was quite a leap for me to venture there. The background info and our age should make for an interesting story. Hope to hear from you. Sincerely, Luan
dear luan,
i love a good love story! my best to you and john…
I was just wondering if you plan on reissuing Secrets of Paris anytime soon. I would love to get my hands on it, so I can have all of your books. You are one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait for The Edge of Winter. I really hope Secrets of Paris will come out like the others have. Thanks so much for your time.
Kira
dear kira,
thank you for your interest…please check back here on the website…we’ll post it when we have a date. i’m very happy to know you enjoy my work.
I own copies of all your books except Secrets of Paris.
Do you know if there are plans to reissue it? I read a library copy and loved it. Thanks for your help.
By the way, I really love all your books. The characters are alive and I feel that I know them. Thanks again.
i’m not sure exactly when it will be reissued…but soon, i hope. thank you for your kind words.
Love your books I have read 19 so far.
Just wanted to know when Sandcastles will be out in paperback?
Nancy
next summer, nancy…thank you…
Luanne,
Can you tell me the release date of your new novel, The Edge of Winter?
Thank You,
Connie
it will be out on february 20…thanks, connie…
Luanne,
Your books are so poignant and touching and they always have life lessons. I love reading them…I experience a wide range of emotions when I read them…laughter, joy, anger, sadness, etc., but I always come away full and replete.
From where do you draw your stories?
Thanks
thank you very much…i draw on life’s experiences: love, loss, hope, dreams… i’m so glad to know my novels are striking a chord with you…
Hello Luanne—I often wonder how you are doing….as it has been many years. I am doing well, now living between Stonington and Niantic. My son Shawn will be 36 this year and I have two beautiful grand babygirls, Ivy and Mea, who live close by in East Lyme. I have probably read ever book you have written and found myself hooked on your novels, waiting anxiously for your next one to come out. Funny how things turn out.
I do hope that you are happy and healthy and that life is treating you well.
Sincerely—Holly
dear holly, your email meant a lot to me (a little edited here!)…a letter is on its way to you…i’m very happy you got in touch.
Hi!
Where do I start? I LOVE your books! Last Labor Day weekend I saw Beach Girls on television and fell in love with your stories. I rushed out to see if the book was like the movie….while I was there I bought several other books that you wrote…..of course I couldn’t put them down! So here I am today and I need to read Sandcastles, The Edge of Winter and Secrets of Paris. Which leads me to my question, where can I find Secrets of Paris? I can’t find it!
Thank you so much for being such a wonderful writer! You and Debbie Macomber have become my two favorites!
Melissa
hi melissa,
i’m thrilled to know you enjoy my books so much. “secrets of paris” will be coming back in paperback soon…i don’t know exactly when… but i’m sure we’ll post the news here on my site.
Luanne, I feel close enough to call you by your first name. You are indeed my favorite author. I am living in Florida now; but lived in Niantic, CT for over 35 years. In many of your books I know just where you are referring to, when describing the area. Your descriptions of places is wonderful; but the people you describe and write about become alive and I love reading and being involved in their lives. Yes; you are a wonderful story teller, and deserve all the acclaim you receive!
Congratulations on Dream Country becoming a movie; all your books certainly could! Thanks for being the writer you are!
your words mean so much to me! i’m glad i can deliver a little connecticut to you in florida…
Good evening Ms Rice,
I wanted to tell you that the very first book I read of your’s was Dream Country. I picked it up not knowing what to expect and was so mesmerized by it I couldn’t put it down.
Some of the towns that you mentioned in your book I had been there since we have friends who live in Wyoming. My special place to drive through was Wind River Canyon. It is a beautiful area to see. I am now hooked on your books and am trying to build a library with all your books.
Thank you for your wonderful writings and continue to write books about different places so I can visit while I read.
A Fan and avid reader
Connie
thank you, connie…i’m so glad to know you enjoyed the book…a friend and i are working on a script of “dream country,” so your message comes at a very inspiring time.
So sad to hear about the Nut Lady’s passing. I, too, knew the nut lady. I lived right on 156 during my teenage years. My grandparents owned and ran Hefflon’s Fish Market. The other thing about me that you would appreciate knowing is that I was Katie and Molly’s second grade teacher and totally fell in love with them. I missed Em because I retired the year that she was in first grade. I’ve just reconnected with Rosemary and love being able to email her.
It was your book dedicated to Rosemary, Kate, Molly, and Em that precipitated me getting back in touch with them - thank you for that. For years I’ve been buying and reading Luanne Rice books never knowing that we had a connection to a mutual friend/sister. How tantalizing!
I knew Mr. Foley although I can’t remember his first name. John, I think, but not certain. And, another interesting fact is that my brother is buried in that delightfully peaceful cemetary, “under the railroad trestle” as you say in your books.
Thank you for all the hours of pleasure you have brought me. Best wishes, Aurelle
thank you, aurelle…what a wonderful connection, on many levels… i think the mr. foley i knew was “warren,” but there may well have been a john…such happy memories.
Is there a way I can get a list of all the books you have ever written? I think your books are wonderful and I’m glad I was introduced to them.
Thank you.
Amy, Anderson SC
and
Is there anyway to get a complete list of what you have written? I have read so many but I would like alist to check off what I have and have not read and got. Thanks.
Joan
thank you for asking, amy and joan.

I am looking forward to reading your latest book. I can’t wait. I have read and loved all your books. Every character is so memorable. You are one of the best story tellers. The problem is that I read them so fast they are done before I know it.
hi…thank you so much. your words mean a lot to me.
Hi Luanne,
I was very happy to receive your new site information. I love reading your books. I live in Tiverton, Rhode Island and I love the fact that you seem to mention Rhode Island in some way in some of your books.
I envy you your career, it is totally amazing to me that you can come up with such wonderful stories. Keep up the great work!
Your loyal reader,
Marcia
hi marcia,
thank you very much. i love rhode island and spend lots of time there. my new book (“the edge of winter”) takes place in the state.
Hi, I am a Rice descendent here in Lafayette, La. and am interested the geneology of the Rice’s. From what we understand, we come from one of 5 Rice brothers, Samuel Rice, that came here from England. One of the 5 brothers founded Rice University in Houston, Tx. and I think his name was William. Do you know anything about your fathers ancestry? My great grandfather Cornelius Rice was one of many children of Samuel & Martha Rice had and he lived about 20 or so miles south of Lafayette in Abbeville, La. Thanks for your time and if you do have any information on your Rice family, would love to hear about it.
Jeanne Rice
hi jeanne, my father’s father was thomas rice, and his father was abraham rice. they settled in hartford ct, after coming over from ireland (dublin and wicklow.) thanks for sharing your branch of the rice family tree…

Heather Wilson
thanks for writing, heather. “edge of winter” is coming out soon…
Hi… just wanted to let you know how much I love your books. I even got my niece and sister hooked on your books. I have just about read all of them… just two or three more to go. I noticed a lot of your books have been made into TV movies. I did see Beach Girls… I have to say it did not do your book justice… but it was a good movie. Is there anywhere you can buy the movies of your books or do I have to wait for them to come on TV again?
You are a fabulous writer!!!!!
Thanks
Tamara
hi tamara,
thank you…beach girls is definitely available on dvd…so glad to know you enjoyed it.
Dear Ms. Rice,
A friend has loaned me Safe Harbor and True Blue and I have fallen in love with your writing and these characters. I’m having a hard time figuring out if any of your other novels return to Hubbard Point from your library. Do any of the other books continue Zeb, Rumor, Quinn or Michael’s story? If not, do you plan to return?
Thank you for writing such wonderful stories,
Julie in NH
dear julie,
thank you so much for your words…many of my novels take place in hubbard’s point. several are “the perfect summer,” “summer’s child,” “summer of roses,” and “beach girls.”
Dear Luanne,
I was hiding out in the Columbia Library, waiting in line at the coffee shop, sifting through my wallet looking for a “Buy-9-Get-the-10th-one-Free” card and I came across your info. I tried the e-mail address (it was an aol account) but it no longer seems to be working. So howdy to you, and to whoever reads this at Random House! Hope you’re all well this morning.
Anyway, Luanne: A month ago I found out that a poem of mine was going to be read on A Writer’s Almanac, which was surprising to say the least, but I never heard the show. I did a google search for it so I could listen to it and I saw that you’d put the poem on your website, which I thought was incredibly sweet. Thanks. I hope you’re doing well. Cheers, Mark Svenvold
MARK!! so great to hear from you… i’ll look for you in maine or on the upper west… to all my readers—mark is one of the greatest living american poets. i’m a huge fan of his work.
