The Best Tuna Sandwich in Christendom and Jewry
Open 2 cans high-quality white albacore tuna packed in water. Drain and place in bowl. Add plenty of black pepper, 2 celery ribs, minced, 1 tablespoon minced red onion, 2 tablespoons chopped green olives stuffed with pimientos, 2 tablespoons chopped caperberries, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1-1/2 teaspoons Gulden's mustard, and 3 tablespoons mayonnaise. Mix well, breaking up fish with fork. Toast 8 slices of Jewish rye. Put slices of gruyere on 4 of them. Broil till bubbling and brown, then make sandwiches using 1 cheese toast with each and washed, dried red-leaf lettuce leaves.
Chapter Eleven
"Why don't you come down for dinner tonight?" Maxine said. Talking to Jane again felt as if no time had passed and reminded Maxine of how much she'd always liked her. Why had they ever parted ways? What fools they'd been. "I can offer the best tuna sandwich in Christendom and Jewry. And whiskey on the rocks. It's the least I can do, and I would be interested to hear what you've been up to, all these years."
