Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) was a utilitarian philosopher and social reformer who designed the Panopticon. Although the Panopticon was never built, the theory behind this model prison strongly influenced the ideas of the Tabula . When visiting Great Britain, members of the Tabula are known to make a ritual visit to Bentham’s body – which is stored in a glass and wooden case in the South Cloister of University College London. (see Sutherland, Morris for a description of the "Bentham’s head" incident) The act of visiting the body is called "Paying Respect to the Father."
