3001 by Arthur C. Clarke: Talk to HAL 9000

<BODY BGCOLOR="#000000" TEXT="#FFFFFF" LINK="#FF0000" VLINK="#FFFFFF" ALINK="#CC0000"> <KBD> <H3>TO ALL CREW MEMBERS:</H3> I have now succeeded in partially reactivating the <B>Odyssey</B>'s HAL 9000 computer. HAL will accept text input only, not voice--his retraining has advanced only far enough to recognize and respond to my voice with any accuracy. If you speak to him out loud, he will not respond. <P> HAL needs interaction to assist in his retraining, so please talk to him. However, I have only reactivated a small portion of his various processing centers and memory modules so far, so certain areas of conversation will not be possible. It would be best for my retraining plan should you confine yourself to questions about what HAL remembers as his last mission, with the <B>Odyssey</B> in 2001, and related matters.
