NARCISSA
By
Lance Tooks
"Tooks
has written an affecting book that skewers the movie business
while offering a black heroine driven by both work and the possibilities
of love. Tooks’s page layouts are inventive and his b&w drawings
are stylish and expressive of underlying character as well as
appearance."

Meet Narcissa,
a strong, brilliant, beautiful and self-assured filmmaker. She
knows exactly what she wants, and she doesn’t pull any punches.
At 36, she is in the midst of making her first feature film, obsessively
focused on her vision, and fighting Simon, the ignorant, racist
producer, every step of the way. But before the final cut of the
film can be made, Narcissa finds out she has a more virulent enemy
to battle—mortality.
Told she
has a week to live, Narcissa decides to outrun death. She flees
to Spain, where distance from her familiar world widens her tunnel-vision,
opening her to experience art and love as she never has before.
Lance
Tooks wrote and illustrated his first comics at age nine,
was an intern at Marvel Comics at age 16, and was an associate
editor there by the time he was 18. His artistic projects have
included the title animation on Madonna’s film "Who’s That
Girl," animation for MTV and Nickelodeon series like Doug,
Daria and Spy Groove. He is a man of many talents
who was a stuntman in the movie "When Nature Calls,"
and an extra in such classics as "Beat Street," "The
Warriors" and "Basket Case." He also performed
in musical theater productions written and produced by his father
and uncle. He divides his time between New York and Spain, and
Narcissa is his first novel.
One of the
debut novels of the new Doubleday Graphic Novels program,
Narcissa displays Lance Tooks’ striking artistic vision
with a beautifully realized character and storyline, not to mention
edgy and incisive social criticism. The elegance, intricacy and
emotional impact of this unique novel is stunning.

They say
curiosity killed the cat, and it may just be the end of Bee. In
SHUTTERBUG FOLLIES (Doubleday; 10/7/02) Jason Little sends
the inquisitive heroine Bee on an enthralling and spine-tingling
murder mystery through New York like you’ve never seen it before.
As a photo-finishing
technician at a one-hour lab in lower Manhattan, Bee has seen
it all, and made duplicates for her own private collection of
bizarre, amusing and titillating photographs. When a man leaves
negatives of a naked corpse, Bee decides to investigate, little
knowing that she will be drawn into a deadly intrigue of voyeurism,
death, art and organized crime. It will take all of Bee’s abundant
wit, courage, pluck and determination to solve the mystery without
ending up dead.
A brilliant
combination of flawless story-telling and vivid, complex, multi-layered
art, SHUTTERBUG FOLLIES is a thrilling page-turner of car
chases, narrow escapes and vicious murders. Jason Little’s
sophisticated visual stylings bring his quirky, charismatic
heroine and fast-paced storyline to vibrant life.
Jason
Little grew up in Binghamton, New York, and studied photography
at Oberlin College. He worked as a photo-processing technician
in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before moving to New York to live with
writer Myla
Goldberg. His Jack's Luck Runs Out was the recipient
of the Xeric Foundation grant in 1998. He has had short works
published by Fantagraphics, Drawn and Quarterly, Top Shelf, and
D.C. Comics. He was recently awarded the Ignatz award for best
web-comic at the Small Press Expo.
