FOR WRITERS AND ARTISTS
At Del Rey Manga, we're always looking for new creative talent, so we accept and review unsolicited submissions.
We will review either proposals for original, manga-style graphic novels or portfolios of artists who are proficient at drawing in the manga style.
Because manga is such a rich, diverse, and unpredictable medium, with so many styles and genres—and so many possibilities for cross-genre experiments and fresh new styles—we'd rather not limit your imagination by telling you exactly what kinds of stories to submit.
But while we can't give you the recipe, we can suggest some ingredients. Here are some strategies for success: If you're a writer, try to attach an artist to your project. Even if you have a genius idea for a story, or have written a great script, Del Rey Manga does not match writers to artists. If you're a brilliant writer with an extraordinary story to tell, find an equally brilliant artist to work with!
If you're an artist, show us what you can do. We're looking for artists who are capable of executing a book-length, manga-style narrative. While being able to create cool character designs and draw a wonderful cover is important, it's just as important to know how to lay out a page, draw convincing backgrounds, and tell a story visually. So, illustrations and character designs are not enough: Show us some manga pages!
Prepare a professional package. Give our editors enough information to see your vision the way you see it.
If you're an artist with a portfolio, your submission package should include complete manga pages as well as character designs/illustrations.
If you're a writer/artist or writer/artist team with a book proposal, your submission package should contain at least:
· a concise description of the story concept;
· a detailed plot summary (1-2 pages);
· descriptions of major characters; and
· complete artwork for 10-20 pages (the first chapter)
Sure, we can look over a submission that has less material than described above, but help us give your project the fair and careful review it deserves. Tell us all about it!
And keep in mind:
Do not send us your original art. We can't be responsible for the safe return of your irreplaceable and fragile artwork. Safeguard your originals; send us good-quality photocopies or scans instead.
No fan fiction. Do not send us stories or artwork featuring characters, illustrations, or storylines that are protected under (someone else's) copyright. We want to see what amazing new stories you can conjure up!
We cannot respond to every submission. We regret that we cannot respond personally to every submission.

TRANSLATORS
All translation at Del Rey Manga is handled on a freelance, out-of-house basis; Del Rey Manga does not employ a full-time, in-house translation staff. Translators are hired on a project-by-project basis, and rates vary by project.
Del Rey Manga hires both literal translators and adapters, as well as translators who are capable of adapting their own work.
If you’d like to submit your work for consideration, e-mail us at delreymanga@randomhouse.com with:
- Resume. Include relevant work experience, credentials, and education history.
- Credits. If your work has been published before, include a list of your publication credits, along with publication details.
- Samples. If you have not been previously be published, be prepared to show samples of your work (translations for translators; script-writing samples for adapters). For translation samples, include the original Japanese.
- Cover Letter. Explain, in brief, your qualifications and what kinds of projects you are seeking (translation or adaptation).
After your resume and credits have been reviewed, you may be asked to take a translation test to assess your level of skill.
Del Rey Manga will contact you if we are interested in considering you for a project. Owing to the large number of applications, we cannot respond personally to every application. No phone calls. There is a limited number of projects available for new freelancers.
