DEL REY MANGA NEWSLETTER – NOVEMBER 2007

At New York's Museum of Natural History, there's right now a fascinating exhibit on magical and fantastical creatures, from mythologies both Eastern and Western: unicorns, kappa, the Kraken, the Roc, gryphons, and both European and Chinese dragons. The exhibit was complete with gorgeous, life-sized statues of these mythological beasts. It got this manga editor thinking about the bizarre and magnificent imaginary menagerie one could assemble just from the creatures found in manga and anime (though it would have a tremendous bias towards the super-cute, what with all the Pikachus and Mokonas and Chamos and other adorable mascots running around). Jorge Luis Borges assembled an illustrated bestiary called The Book of Imaginary Beings, that was pretty complete for its time; my favorite Dr. Seuss book, If I Ran the Zoo, shows us what a zoo filled entirely with Seussian flora and fauna might look like. I'm still waiting for the Audubon of manga and anime to assemble the world's most comprehensive reference work on the subject, for an Attenborough to make a documentary (anime-style), for a Costeau to take us on the world's wildest and strangest expedition.

MANGA: THE COMPLETE GUIDE

Maybe if anyone could create such a book, it would be Jason Thompson, the author of Del Rey Manga's Manga: The Complete Guide, now in stores. Manga maven and gentleman scholar Thompson has created a book that's the Encylopedia Britannica of manga in a totally portable one-volume form. The intrepid Thompson and his staff of manga-ologists have ventured out into the field, collected, and meticulously anatomized over 900 specimens—it features reviews of every manga published in the U.S. to date—including fascinating typological essays on families and species of manga: not just your common shonen and shojo, but your more exotic creatures such as mecha manga, sports manga, cooking manga, and so many more. Take the ultimate manga field guide on your next safari to the bookstore! Speaking of Jason Thompson…

JASON THOMPSON @ COMIC RELIEF

Here's an authentic sighting of Jason Thompson, author of Manga: The Complete Guide, in his natural habitat: a comic book shop. He did a signing with one of our favorite stores, Comic Relief in Berkeley, CA. Check out some pictures of the event, and if you're ever in the neighborhood be sure to drop by. And tell Rory we sent you!

SPEAKING OF COMIC BOOK SHOPS…

At a recent event for comics store owners, Del Rey Manga held a contest in which one lucky comics shop won an instant inventory of top selling Del Rey Manga. The lucky winner? Captain Blue Hen Comics in Newark, Delaware! So for all you Diamond State Del Rey Manga fans, now you know where to go to get your fix, so drop on by and when you do, tell 'em we sent you.

DEL REY MANGA @ KINOKUNIYA

On November 3rd, the Del Rey Manga team helped celebrate the new New York flagship Kinokuniya Bookstore, assembling for a panel called "Your Career in Manga." During the panel, we talked about life in the three-ring circus that is the manga industry. But even those of you who missed out on the panel should stop by Kinokuniya's spiffy new store on 6th Ave. and 40th Street in Manhattan: the fully renovated store now features a shiny new manga floor and a comfy café where you can sip green tea and nibble on Japanese pastries whilst perusing a copy of Manga: The Complete Guide. Trust me: Kinokuniya has so many great manga titles you're going to need help choosing! Next time you're in New York, you just have to visit. And when you do, be sure to tell 'em we sent you, OK?

THE MANGA BIBLE

No, this isn't another blurb for Manga: The Complete Guide—this is a horse of a different color. It's a manga version of the book of books, the Bible, illustrating stories from Genesis to Revelation, available from Galilee, a sister imprint here at Random House. With super-cool artwork by British artist Siku, and a stirring, accessible adaptation by Akin Akinsiku, this is the perfect introduction to the Bible for teen readers. The adaptation even includes chapter and verse references to aid in further Bible study. Look for it January 15, 2008, wherever books and comics are sold.

DEL REY MANGA BLOG

Our friends at Active Anime were so great helping us blog from the San Diego Comic Con, that we're making it a regular feature. So if getting this newsletter just once a month is not enough for you, you can catch the whole Del Rey Manga staff regularly mouthing off on our new blog! And don't forget to drop in on our discussion forums, too, where you can talk about matters manga all day and night!

NEW YORK ANIME FESTIVAL

Devoted manga fans like you are probably deeply in the know, but I have to mention the New York Anime Festival, which so far promises to be the biggest, best, and most spectacular anime and manga convention ever. Myself, I'm looking forward to all the cool NYAF events: the World Cosplay Summit Masquerade, the screenings, the J-pop concerts, and the maid café! Plus stop by our panel to hear our latest new license announcements, and drop by Del Rey Manga in Booth #321 in the exhibit hall. And when you do, be sure to tell us we sent you!

NEW SERIES: AVENTURA!

In November 27, 2007, Del Rey Manga releases Aventura by Shin Midorikawa. This is series won me over right away with its beautiful, unique art. If you're ready to fall in love with a new manga series, too, check out its animated trailer. I could go on for pages and pages about what I love about this series—its persuasive, enchanting fantasy world setting; its courageous, lovable boy wizard hero; its touching sweetness and stirring "Hold on to your dreams! Believe in yourself!" message—but  let the trailer cast its spell on you. This is a special book—give in to its magic!

If you'd like to try for early admission to Aventura's school of magic, e-mail us! If you're selected, we'll send you an advance copy of the book to read. We only ask one thing: Write back to us and give us your opinion!

Send your emails to delreymanga@randomhouse.com with AVENTURA in the subject line, including your full name and address in the body of the e-mail (NOTE: your personal information will not be used for any purpose other than this contest). Ten (10) lucky winners will be selected at random and will receive a copy of the book when it is published. All submissions must be received by Wednesday, November 22, 2007.

PSYCHO BUSTERS CONTEST WINNERS

Here's the next exhibit in the Del Rey Manga Zoo, one of the coolest and most rarefied species out there: winners of our latest contest! These ten lucky readers are right now grazing on their advance copies of Psycho Busters, from Yuya Aoki (GetBackers) and Akinari Nao.

  Michael Bank (Wilmington, DE)

  Kelsey Corday (Arlington Heights, IL)
  Paula E. Culp (Cleveland, TN)
  James Jetton (Williamston, MI)
  Sanjay Patel (Los Angeles, CA)

Here's what one winner, Brian Chapel, had to say about the book:

Excellent story by the team of Akinari Nao and Yuyu Aoki. The artwork was top-notch and the explanations of how the psychic powers work and the different kinds between the characters...well done. Thanks for sending this to me and will look forward to future issues. Once again, Del Rey Manga delivers another great series.
