DEL REY MANGA
NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2008
Do you remember your first time…your very first manga? Was it Fruits Basket, which your best friend handed to you with a "You'll love this. Trust me"? Was it Lone Wolf and Cub, from back in the day when none of your friends had even heard of manga? Was it Naruto, after you saw the show and forever swore loyalty as a citizen of the Naruto Nation?
For me, it was Ai Yazawa's Paradise Kiss, which called to me from a crowded library shelf. I was a longtime comics reader, and an admirer of the medium as an art form. One flip of the pages and I knew that my knowledge of the medium was tragically incomplete: Here was a wholly different narrative language, with a radical (by Western standards) sense of page layout, pacing, and storytelling.
In fact, I even remember the moment that manga grabbed me forever. It was Yukari and George's first kiss, which Yazawa rendered as a series of repeated silent panels, each panel containing the same image, but each one a little larger than the last. It conveyed the sense, perfectly and beautifully, that this was a moment that felt like it lasted forever.
Well, it turns out that one of my colleagues at Random House, Catherine, is about to read her first manga—and we need you to help her decide which one! Go to Suvudu.com, at Random House's sci-fi and fantasy portal, and vote for your recommendation in the comments! And visit Suvudu regularly for your daily geek-culture fix.
San Diego Comic Con 08
At this year's San Diego Comic Con, we were honored to welcome two distinguished Del Rey Manga creators:
HIRO MASHIMA
Fairy Tail's creator, Hiro Mashima, got a rock star-style welcome from his American fans. He answered hilarious and clever questions from readers at his panel—and treated them to an awesome demonstration of his drawing technique.
He also signed autographs on a convention-exclusive shikishi, and got a cool gift from a fervent fan.
And, at his panel, he met a few familiar faces:
