DEL REY MANGA
NEWSLETTER – JULY 2006
Readers, I just returned from Anime Expo, and I must admit that I felt a little out of place. It seemed like I was the only person in the whole convention center who wasn't cosplaying! That's what I love about anime and manga cons. It's not the battle robots, monsters, samurai, and schoolgirls carrying "Glomp Me" signs who look eccentric—it's me in my t-shirt and jeans who's the weirdo. So what do you think? Shall I cosplay at next year's show? But who should I go as? The Wallflower's Sunako? Pichi Pichi Pitch's mermaid princess, Lucia Nanami? The President from Genshiken's anime-within-a-manga Kujibiki Unbalance, just so I can wear that gigantic helmet? Or perhaps an always-in-style goth-loli French maid outfit, with a fetching set of cat ears for good measure?
But surely I won't measure up to all the enthusiastic fans who cosplayed as characters from our manga! Take a look at a few of them. Don't they look great?
Jennifer Huang of Irvine, CA as Chocolat from Sugar Sugar Rune
Megan O'Donnell and Tyler Adams of San Diego, CA as Tsubasa's Sakura and Syaoran
Alice Baron of Los Angeles, CA as Tsubasa's Mokona and Lisa Klassen of Alta Loma, CA as the Space-Time Witch of Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC
And a mysterious stranger as Tsubasa's Fai D. Flowright
Thanks to everyone who attended our panel and stopped by our booth. We hope we'll see you all again at San Diego Comic Con later this month! We'll have more highly coveted freebies to give away, and, as always, your friendly Del Rey editors will be on hand to answer your every question and chat with you for hours and hours about your favorite scenes from Negima.
CLAMP MANIA!
Anime Expo was the site of an almost divine visitation: CLAMP's first-ever U.S. appearance! Thanks to the 5,000 devoted fans who came to the fan focus panel to show their love and adoration for their favorite manga-ka! You helped make CLAMP's visit a very special one. At the focus panel, CLAMP answered questions about everything from the sources of their inspiration to why there are one-eyed characters in both Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC (Ageha Ohkawa: "I'm trying to visually show that there can be a very big traumatic experience/feeling and I'm basically trying to show the feeling of being lonely.") And they couldn't say enough about how pleased they were to see the passion American fans have for manga. Thanks, guys, you made a great impression!
CLAMP FANS REJOICE: IT'S THE TSUBASA CHARACTER GUIDE
So you've read every volume of Tsubasa at least ten times. You have dreams in which you're chasing magic feathers in distant corners of the universe. When your friends ask you for advice, you freak them out by quoting the Space-Time Witch's gnomic utterances: "There is no coincidence in the world. What is there is hitsuzen." But how much do you really know about Tsubasa? No matter how much you do, I bet you want to know more! On November 30th, be sure to pick up the Tsubasa Character Guide, your guide to the mysterious and magical worlds of Tsubasa, with character biographies, quizzes, pre-production artwork, fan art, a bonus Tsubasa short story, a special interview with CLAMP member Ageha Ohkawa, and more!

Q-KO-CHAN CONTEST WINNERS
It's pretty great to be the first of your friends to read an amazing new manga like Q-ko-chan, but the best part of winning one of our contests is getting your name in our fabulous newsletter, right? Here are last month's glamorous and enviable winners:
Annie Nguyen, Austin, TX
Greg Evans, Salt Lake City, UT
Nalini Bholanauth, Brooklyn, NY
Jordan Scott, Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK
Joshua Parker, Columbia, SC
Matt Van Opens, Watertown, WI
Nastassja Zamora, Arlington, TX
Julia Gabrielson, Baraboo, WI

Here's what one of our advance readers had to say about Q-ko-chan:
"It has a great storyline to it, the characters are so cute, and it has got some great action scenes...I can't wait until volume 2 comes out!"
—Nastassja Zamora
That settles it: It's time for me to get working on my very own Q-ko-chan costume. Which will probably take great sewing skills and a degree in advanced robotics. Good thing I have a whole year to make it!
