DEL REY MANGA NEWSLETTER – JULY 2006 Readers, I just returned from Anime Expo, and I must admit that I felt a little out of place. It seemed like I was the only person in the whole convention center who wasn't cosplaying! That's what I love about anime and manga cons. It's not the battle robots, monsters, samurai, and schoolgirls carrying "Glomp Me" signs who look eccentric—it's me in my t-shirt and jeans who's the weirdo. So what do you think? Shall I cosplay at next year's show? But who should I go as? The Wallflower's Sunako? Pichi Pichi Pitch's mermaid princess, Lucia Nanami? The President from Genshiken's anime-within-a-manga Kujibiki Unbalance, just so I can wear that gigantic helmet? Or perhaps an always-in-style goth-loli French maid outfit, with a fetching set of cat ears for good measure? But surely I won't measure up to all the enthusiastic fans who cosplayed as characters from our manga! Take a look at a few of them. Don't they look great? CLAMP MANIA! Anime Expo was the site of an almost divine visitation: CLAMP's first-ever U.S. appearance! Thanks to the 5,000 devoted fans who came to the fan focus panel to show their love and adoration for their favorite manga-ka! You helped make CLAMP's visit a very special one. At the focus panel, CLAMP answered questions about everything from the sources of their inspiration to why there are one-eyed characters in both Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC (Ageha Ohkawa: "I'm trying to visually show that there can be a very big traumatic experience/feeling and I'm basically trying to show the feeling of being lonely.") And they couldn't say enough about how pleased they were to see the passion American fans have for manga. Thanks, guys, you made a great impression! CLAMP FANS REJOICE: IT'S THE TSUBASA CHARACTER GUIDE So you've read every volume of Tsubasa at least ten times. You have dreams in which you're chasing magic feathers in distant corners of the universe. When your friends ask you for advice, you freak them out by quoting the Space-Time Witch's gnomic utterances: "There is no coincidence in the world. What is there is hitsuzen." But how much do you really know about Tsubasa? No matter how much you do, I bet you want to know more! On November 30th, be sure to pick up the Tsubasa Character Guide, your guide to the mysterious and magical worlds of Tsubasa, with character biographies, quizzes, pre-production artwork, fan art, a bonus Tsubasa short story, a special interview with CLAMP member Ageha Ohkawa, and more! MANGA FOCUS GROUP We're looking for enthusiastic manga fans to participate in a Del Rey Manga focus group. Torn to pieces by a pack of dogs, Jintetsu's ravaged body was found by Genkichi, outcast and master inventor. Genkichi gives him a new indestructible steel body, and a talking sword, just what he'll need to face down the gang that's terrorizing his hometown and the mobster who ordered his father's death. But what about Otsuki, the beautiful girl he left behind? Steel armor is defense against any sword, but it can't save him from the pain in his heart. Year 71, Cosmic Era: an uneasy peace rests between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT after the terrible battle of Yakin Due. But even as Cagalli and Athrun visit Chairman Dullindal to cement the tentative cease-fire, ZAFT terrorists plot to drag both sides into open war. Their plan: storm ZAFT territory and steal several Gundam Mobile Suits...and that's only the beginning. Four of Japan's most gorgeous guys have the impossible task of turning goth loner Sunako into a lady. When they find Sunako all dressed up and ready for a night on the town, the guys think their luck may have finally changed. Hoping to catch a glimpse of Sunako's date, the quartet follow her out the door. But instead of a handsome prince, they find an old granny with a taste for the macabre! Granny's Museum of Horrors is closing shop, and she's promised all of the remaining items to Sunako, her best (and only) customer. Just what the guys need—more gruesome artifacts cluttering their house. Sunako plans to bring her horrific treasures home, but the guys will do anything to stop her...even if it means all-out war.
