DEL REY MANGA NEWSLETTER – MAY 2006

Since I started working at Del Rey, possibly the one question I'm asked the most is, "Why do you like manga?" Readers, I know that if you all had a dollar for every time a parent/teacher/significant other/random busybody asked you that question, you could finally take that trip to Tokyo you've been planning all these years.

What do you usually say? I think I give a different answer every single time. But I really want to find just the perfect way to answer this question. The one answer which, upon my saying it, will instantly fill my unsuspecting listener with a total, life-consuming, joyful love of manga.

But I'm not there yet. For now I'll stick with the answer I've been using most often: Oh, I just have a thing for giant robots.

What do you think? Did I just make you want to read more manga?

If I did—and I know it worked—just wait until I tell you about our new books for May. But first, it's worth saying again:

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GIANT ROBOTS

Don't look now, but a whole fleet of giant robots is heading your way. Hitting bookstores in July is the latest Gundam series and a sequel to Del Rey's own Gundam SEED. That's right—it's Gundam SEED Destiny.

For those of you who loved Gundam SEED, Gundam SEED Destiny has more of everything you love about Gundam: more intergalactic intrigue and interstellar battles, more epic romances and world-ending wars, and even more giant robots with swords. For those of you haven't yet gotten swept away by one of the greatest and most enduring sagas in manga and anime, it's time to step aboard.

But what's the one thing that would make a bigger impact than a fleet of giant robots landing on U.S. shores? It could only be...

CLAMP AT ANIME EXPO!

Actually, they're probably the number one reason you love manga: they're CLAMP, and they're coming to the United States for the first time ever! CLAMP will be the guests of honor at this year's Anime Expo in Anaheim, CA (July 1-4, 2006). Want to know more? Read our press release for details!

And that's just one of the exciting things we have going on at the cons this year.

CALLING ALL AIR GEAR COSPLAYERS!

Will you be at the San Diego Comic Con, cosplaying as your favorite Air Gear character? If so, we'd like to hear from you!

Lend us a hand with an exciting promotion at the show, and get some free Del Rey Manga stuff! If you're interested, e-mail us at delreymanga@randomhouse.com with Air Gear Cosplay in the subject line for details.

CONTEST!

Not only was I not kidding about the giant robots thing, I really love robots of all kinds. That's why I enjoy this month's new manga so much. Not only is it about a robot, it's about a very strange, almost totally unprecedented sort of robot: a cyborg samurai! In Kei Toume's Kurogane, a samurai goes to his grave with an unquiet soul: he has yet to revenge his father's murder. An outcast and master inventor resurrects him, giving him a new, indestructible steel body. Now nothing will stop him from taking his vengeance!

You can read all about this and more in our upcoming online preview, but if you just can't wait to read the whole thing, don't despair. E-mail us, and if you're selected, we'll send you a set of advance page proofs to read. We only ask one thing: Write back to us and tell us what you think!

Send your emails to delreymanga@randomhouse.com with KUROGANE in the subject line, including your full name and address in the body of the e-mail (NOTE: your personal information will not be used for any purpose other than this contest). Ten (10) lucky winners will be selected at random and will receive a set of Kurogane advance page proofs and a copy of the book when it is published. All submissions must be received by Wednesday, May 24th, 2006.

Here are the lucky winners of last month's contest, who all won ES page
proofs. Here's what one of them had to say after reading her prize pages: "I'm highly anticipating each volume in the series, because much like the main character, this is one story that will control your thoughts!"—Marybeth Domurat, Marcellus, NY

Brian Chapel, Chandler, AZ

Marianna Gizzarelli, Providence, RI

Ashley Hanna, Hartland, WI 53129

Maybe it's time to ask yourself the question of the hour: Why do you like manga? Keep on reading for six more reasons to love it.

The Genshiken has long been famous for its remarkable record of inactivity. But now that Kanji Sasahara has stepped in as the new club president, it looks as though things may change. Kanji wants the club to produce its first fanzine and when the Genshiken members are accepted as official vendors at the summer Comic-Fest, they are forced to create a real doujinshi and fast! With only a month until the submission deadline, can this sluggish bunch of otaku get anything done? Meanwhile, Kousaka is about to reveal a secret side of himself that nobody has ever seen.

Guru Guru Pon-Chan, Volume Four

In stores April 25, 2006

Ponta quickly meets and falls in love with Mirai Iwaki. And when he realizes that she's actually a dog, Mirai learns to overcome it. Talk about an odd couple.

In ways of the heart, it is certainly not an easy road for them. Plus Mirai's ex-girlfriend wants him back by any means necessary. When Mirai and Ponta go to the beach together, the trip turns disastrous. Can Ponta make the romance work, or will she give up her life as a human forever?

Nodame, Volume Six

In stores April 25, 2006

Chiaki is beyond ecstatic. Maestro Stresemann has decided to conduct the A orchestra and has asked Chiaki to join. But who will lead the S orchestra? Drastic measures may mean a hilarious concert, and a festival to remember. From the student body to the faculty, the whole school is abuzz with anticipation. Nodame is playing a piano concerto, Chiaki, too, is tickling the ivories (and honored to be led by the Great Master), and the S orchestra is just thrilled to be part of the program. Of course, the real excitement begins the night before the musical event.

Plus, there's a special story about Chiaki's first meeting with Sebastiano Viera. You won't want to miss it!
