DEL REY MANGA NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2009

Keeping one's New Year's resolutions often demands such disagreeable sacrifices; it involves too much "early-to-rise-early-to-bed" and "apple-a-day" virtue. I'm going to keep mine the easy way: I'll do it by reading more manga. Check it out!

Resolutions for 2009

  1. Renew old friendships: Life these days is so fast-paced and stressful, we sometimes don't take the time we need to nurture our most important relationships. That's why I've resolved to revisit the good old days with my old friend, Negi Springfield and his adorable students, in the super-cool Negima reboot, Negima!? Neo.
  2. Cook a meal for my friends: Kitchen Princess has loads of great recipes—check out the fancy tea party recipes in Volume 8!—and inspiring lessons on cooking and love!
  3. Learn more about classic cinema: I'll start with Akira Kurosawa's immortal Seven Samurai—and then read Samurai 7, an awesome manga re-telling of one of the greatest films of all time.
  4. Master the power of negative thinking: Sure, lots of people resolve to be more optimistic and "look on the bright side of life." Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei: The Power of Negative Thinking, has a different take—on the value of sarcasm, misanthropy, pessimism, and a stylish sense of ennui.

NEW YORK COMIC CON—FEBRUARY 6th-9th!

Past the vast and trackless wastes of Mordor; somewhere north of Winterfell and The Wall in Westeros; beyond the kingdom of the bears in Svalbard, and far from ; and deep in this, the  most desolate of winters in New York City—shines one golden beacon: New York Comic Con. Turn left at the lamp-post in Narnia, go straight past the Fortress of Solitude, and never mind the black slush on Tenth Avenue that once was snow: You're almost there, at the Javits Center, for one of the best conventions of the year.

That's right, Del Rey Manga loves its fans so much we'll trek through subzero temperatures and the dreaded "wintry mix" to be there at the Del Rey Manga booth, ready to greet you with the usual heartwarming mix of awesome giveaways and humorous conversation. We hope to see you there!

Del Rey Manga will be set up at booth #1940 & 1941 so stop by if you're at the show. And while you're there, we're expecting you at our panel! Join the Del Rey Manga Happy Fun Time Hullabaloo on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. in room 1A06 for all the news, announcements, and general jocularity you've come to expect from Del Rey Manga—the best dressed bunch in all manga!

Plus, for the prose-lovers among you, we're hosting plenty of events and signings for with your favorite science-fiction and fantasy authors from Del Rey and Spectra. Check out the full list here.

SAYONARA, ZETSUBOU-SENSEI CONTEST

Ever since the ascendance of our new president, everyone has been running around brandishing, wholly unironically, such once-abandoned terms as "hope" and "change." However, one individual (no, not yours truly, your melancholy and misanthropic manga correspondent), has been completely resistant to this epidemic of hope-a-mania: Zetsubou-sensei, a.k.a. Teacher Despair.

He's the inimitable anti-hero of Koji Kumeta's bleak and black-hearted satire, Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei: The Power of Negative Thinking. Already the subject of an addictively depressing/completely hilarious anime, this manga chronicles the efforts of the suicidally depressed Zetsubou-sensei—the Jean-Paul Sartre, the Franz Kafka, the Jon-Cusack-in-Better-Off-Dead of middle school teachers--to crush the hopes and dreams of his innocent, impressionable young students. It's just the dose of depression you need in the darkest depths of winter.

Go to the head of the class with an advance copy of Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei. E-mail us, and if you're selected, you'll win an advance copy of the book. There's just one catch: You have to write in and tell us what you think! (Extra credit for bad teenage poetry and overshare-y LJ ramblings.)

Send your emails to delreymanga@randomhouse.com with SAYONARA in the subject line, including your full name and address in the body of the e-mail (NOTE: your personal information will not be used for any purpose other than this contest). Ten (10) lucky winners will be selected at random and will receive a copy of the book when it is published. All submissions must be received by Wednesday, February 23, 2009.
