DEL REY MANGA NEWSLETTER – APRIL 2008

New York Comic Con is fast approaching—one of the social events of the year for Del Rey Manga (after all, it is Nerd Prom). But if you really want to know what the true Del Rey Manga Comic Con experience is, you have to spend a little time with Ali T. Kokmen, our dynamo marketing manager.

Ali's the one in charge of pulling together so much of our convention planning—from wrangling the elements of the perfect booth to getting our free convention schwag ready.

Even though planning takes months before the first day of the con, even now, with just days to go before it all begins, there's still the usual frenzy of last-minute changes, approvals, and fires raging totally out of control (sometimes literally!) There's so much to do, and it seems like Ali's always busy getting it done. And right now, with days to go, he's sitting surrounded in his office with boxes and boxes of the amazing giveaways we'll have at the show—free posters, free sampler books, and unbelievably cool Fairy Tail slap bracelets!

But all this work eventually pays off: Always, every time, on the morning of, Ali's dialed up to 10, in his purple suit, accessorized, of course, with the Tie of the Day (for DRM newbs, Ali always sports a different comics-themed tie, some of them bowties, for each day of a con), shouting his perennial con slogan, "It's Comic Con, baby! Yeah!" It's hard not to get excited for the show, too!

This is the professional convention experience in brief: months of careful preparation, several weeks of frenzied last-minute arrangements, all for three days of senseless excitement, ridiculous fun, and socially acceptable geeking out.

Stop by our booth #1920/1921 to meet Ali (who's always there, every day, all day, at our shows) and the rest of the Del Rey Manga team, pick up some great free stuff, and just chat about Hiro Mashima worship, your favorite Negima! girl, and the true identity of Kitchen Princess's Flan Prince. And read on for a complete slate of Del Rey events at the show!

It's Official: Everyone Loves Fairy Tail

A big thank you to the hordes of fans who have made Fairy Tail one of the world champions of manga. With volumes 1 and 2 out now in fine stores and comics shops everywhere, why not see what all the excitement is about? Start with our trailer and then venture on your own's wizard's quest to the store to grab your very own copy!

Interview with Katsushi Ota, editor of Faust

A few lucky attendees at last year's New york Anime Festival were present at Katsushi Ota's—dashing young editor extraordinaire, the editor-in-chief of Faust and the revolutionizer of the light novel—panel on Japanese pop lit. For those of you who missed out, Deb Aoki interviewed Ota-san at About.com. Ota-san's a visionary with millions of brilliant ideas: check out the interview to hear about bringing Megatokyo to Japan, the unremarked influence of video games on Harry Potter, and how Faust's mix of avant-garde chic and pop culture style has changed Japanese literature forever.

Hooray for Anime! Yozakura Quartet

It's pretty great to work in a sector of the publishing world there are routinely animated films made of your books. So we're all quite buzzed about the news that Yozakura Quartet is about to become an anime! Start reading the manga now so that you can start refining those "the manga was better than the anime" arguments ready ahead of time.

SPJA Industry Awards 2008!

We're delighted to report that Del Rey Manga has received nominations in three categories of the 2008 Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation awards. Congratulations to all involved!

Voting for final winners is open to the public, so head over to the official voting page to cast your vote for Tsubasa, Negima!, and Kitchen Princess as your favorite action, comedy, and drama manga respectively!

Eisner Awards, Too!

But that's not all! The Eisner Awards (the Oscars of the comics industry! Anyone know where I can get a gown for the red carpet?) has nominated Jason Thompson's Manga: The Complete Guide in the category of "Best Comics-Related Book." Voted on by industry professionals, the Eisner Awards will be handed out on July 25, 2008 during Comic-Con International: San Diego. Congratulations, Jason!

Haridama Contest

Last year, American audiences were introduced to the cool, dreamy style of Atsushi Suzumi with Venus vs. Virus, featuring the world's most gorgeous goth-loli assassin. Atushi Suzumi works the geek chic again in the one-volume special Haridama: Magic Cram School, a dream machine for fans of wizards, wizard schools, wizard ninjas, and wizard whiz kids. In Haridama, our hero (just as cute as that Daniel Radcliffe) and his best friend are students at a cram school for student sorcerors. And, like students everywhere, they're not out to save the world, fulfill a prophecy, or face down a supervillain. They're facing something even more challenging: the world's toughest final exam…and it's going to take more than a really sharp #2 pencil to beat this one!

Be the teacher's pet—be among the first to read Haridama! E-mail us, and if you're one of ten lucky readers, you'll get a copy of the Haridama book. This special prize comes with homework, though: You'll have to write in and tell us what you think!

Send your emails to delreymanga@randomhouse.com with HARIDAMA in the subject line, including your full name and address in the body of the e-mail (NOTE: your personal information will not be used for any purpose other than this contest). Ten (10) lucky winners will be selected at random and will receive a copy of the book when it is published. All submissions must be received by Wednesday, May 21, 2008.
