Literary compositions are judged by their technical merit; however,
artistic expression is our core criterion. We are looking for writing with a strong, clear voice by authors who are daring, original and unafraid to take risks. Graphic novels are judged on the same criteria as well as storytelling, character design, artistic style, design and layout.
You must be a high school senior attending a New York City public high school to enter the competition.
Your original literary composition must be submitted in one of the following formats: poetry/spoken word, OR fiction/drama, OR personal essay/memoir OR graphic novel (a novel, usually in comics form, where the narrative is related through a combination of text and art, i.e. manga).
All submissions must be typed, double-spaced, and no longer than ten pages with a minimum font size of 12 point. All pages must also be numbered. A four-page minimum is recommended in the fiction/drama category. There is no minimum for the other categories.
No handwritten entries.
No photos or drawings, unless it's a graphic novel submission.
No college essays, book reports, myth and legends.
Foreign language submissions and previously published material will not be accepted.
Photocopies are acceptable if legible and printed on good-quality white (not gray) paper. Original art accepted for graphic novel category, but since no submissions are returned, it is suggested that very clean color copies be submitted.
You may submit only one entry to the competition.
Graphic novel submissions may be entered by a single student or a team of two or more students.
ALL ENTRIES MUST BE ORIGINAL WORKS. NO PLAGIARISM, NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.
Poetry/spoken word, fiction/drama, personal essay/memoir, and graphic novel entries must be postmarked by February 6, 2015.
