Synopsis

Unforgettable artwork, heavenly villages, island paradises, dream cities...there are so many reasons to visit Italy that deciding where to go and what to do can be a bit overwhelming. Fodor's Essential Italy takes the guesswork out of choosing the perfect Italian experiences by compiling the top choices chosen by Fodor’s army of Italy-based writers.

Expanded Coverage:
A major benefit of the long-running best-seller, Fodor’s Italy, was a bequest to Fodor’s Essential Italy from its cornucopia of restaurant, hotel, nightlife, shops, and attractions reviews, all curated and newly honed to spice up this Essential edition.

Illustrated Features:
Hundreds of lively images throughout the guide add momentum to the enchantments found throughout Italy. The visual impact of these photos is doubly enhanced by ten in-depth, magazine-style articles highlighting Italy’s top attractions, including Rome’s imperial ruins; Barolo’s wine country; Venice’s Grand Canal; Fashionista Milan; a Who’s Who of Renaissance Art in Florence; the Sistine Chapel Ceiling; the frescoes at the Basilica of St. Francis; villas by the great Palladio; and more.

Indispensable Trip Planning Tools:
The major attractions of the big three—Rome, Venice, and Florence—are given at-a-glance treatment, alongside top itineraries, Best Bets for restaurants and lodging, and what to do whether on your own or with the kids. Our user-friendly "Experience" chapter helps in planning for the most memorable trip, cueing you in to Top Attractions, Top Experiences, Italy Today, What's New, and a multitude of other information. Easy-to-scan recommendations run the gamut from alfresco dining in Venice to the art treasures of Florence; how to trek the Cinque Terre; and where to find the best beaches along the Amalfi Coast.

About Fodor's

Fodor's - Fodor's Essential Italy
Born in 1905 and raised in Czechoslovakia, Eugene Fodor joined the U.S. Army’s psychological-warfare branch during World War II. He emerged a decorated war hero, thanks to his leadership in the liberation of Prague and Pilsen.

Multilingual and with extensive travel intelligence, Fodor began working for the CIA during the Cold War. His publishing career began in 1936 when Fodor created the first modern guidebook and many of his guidebook writers were undercover CIA agents. Fodor revolutionized the travel publishing industry, inspiring new generations to explore the world around them. An American, a Hungarian, a world citizen, a CIA agent, a war hero, a New York Times best-selling author, and an entrepreneur—Eugene Fodor was the spy who loved travel.
