Synopsis
Synopsis
From 1 to 40, from dance partner to handyman, the fun and functions of grandfathers are inventively enumerated. The book's charm is in how the "use" term and accompanying illustration pair up. Sometimes it's straightforward, like the arms-circled-out-in-front "ball hoop." Other entries, such as grandpas' "uses" as entertainment centers, butlers, and mediators, supply kids with a fresh perspective on all that their grandparents are and do for them. Note that while kids and grandparents are rendered with realism and obvious affection, this book avoids stock shiny-happy-perfect depictions. Number 2, showing grandpa's pained look at having to serve as a turtle veterinarian, is an apt illustration of this. At the end of the list, it all adds up to grandpa being a wonderful friend.

"Don't be surprised when little ones demand to take Grandma and Grandpa through these books, page by charming page. These books break the mold, reminding us that grandparents make wonderful e-pals, yoga instructors, and sports fans. They're a delightful bridge between the generations, a terrific catalyst for a relationship that can be as important as the one kids have with [parents]." --Cricket magazine
