To create his work, David Rees says all he needs is a computer with access to clip art and hip hop websites and a laser printer, and so he's found his artists's studio in an unlikely space: the temp job. And his work -- My New Fighting Technique is Unstoppable, along with its in-progress sequel My New Filing Technique is Unstoppable, and an Internet-only series "Get Your War On" about the war in Afghanistan -- is the best mix of Cubicle Culture and Gangsta Rap since Mike Judge's Office Space. Only this shit is funnier. In My New Fighting Technique, the main characters are two clip-art karate fighters who do battle with each other and with a series of other unlikely adversaries, from Karate Snoopy to the Circulatory System. Their dialogue is equal parts Wu-Tang Clan and Iron Monkey. And somehow it's totally brilliant: hilarious, addictive, and revelatory. And it only gets better with rereading. Clearly there's some sort of crazy alchemy at work among these various ingredients, a crazy alchemy in the hands of a Mad Genius. In this issue, the Mad Genius himself writes about the ingredients that went into the Unstoppable Technique, from medical clip-art to MC battles. And there are some excerpts from My New Fighting Technique. If you want more, you'll have to check out Rees's website at MNFTIU.cc. |
