A Hope in the Unseen: an excerpt

reading

Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning series that originally appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Ron Suskind's A Hope in the Unseen follows the efforts of Cedric Jenning to escape the crime and despair of his inner-city neighborhood through academic achievement. It's not an easy task--as an honor student in one of the worst high schools in Washington D.C., Cedric is the object of ridicule...and worse. Nevertheless, he perseveres and achieves what once seemed impossible: admission to Brown University--entrance to the world of the Ivy League. Cedric's high school education, however, has left him woefully unprepared for the kind of work expected at Brown. His fellow students--mostly priviledged and white--are completely alien to him. Overwhelmed by his courses and socially isolated, Cedric flounders in his first semester. Through persistence, determination, and hard work, though, Cedric regains his footing--and rediscovers hope.

In Bold Type this month, we bring you an interview with Ron Suskind and Cedric Jennings, as well as an excerpt from A Hope in the Unseen and an author reading.
