Fletcher Brandon, a professional magician known as "Red," meets Rosa in an Oxford pub, where he seduces her with a successfully performed trick. When Rosa dies mysteriously in a freak accident one year later, Red uses all of his conjuror's wiliness to try to discover the cause. His vigilante investigation, which puts him at odds with former friends, family and the police, is an exploration of deceitfulness in all its forms, whether on the stage or in the heart.
