AMERICAN-MADE: The Enduring Legacy of the WPA- When FDR Put the Nation to Work

Nonfiction
To be published on the 75th anniversary of the Works Progress Administration, this is the first general history of one of the most controversial, humane, and enduring programs to come out of the terrible Depression years of the 1930s: the jobs program that for 8 years restored pride and paychecks to many millions of hungry, homeless and jobless Americans. When President Roosevelt took the oath of office in March 1933 and promised a "New Deal" for the American people, he was addressing a devastated nation. It was the fourth year of the Great Depression and a staggering twelve million Americans-one quarter of the workforce-were jobless and the thirty-six million family members who depended on them were in desperate need. People wanted work, the pride of earning a paycheck, not handouts. In 1935, after a variety of temporary relief measures, a permanent nationwide jobs program was created: the Works Progress Administration. In its time, the WPA spent $11 billion, employed 8.5 million men and women, and gave the country not only a renewed spirit but a fresh face. Under its colorful head, Harry Hopkins, the agency's remarkable accomplishment was to combine the urgency of putting people back to work with its vision of physically rebuilding America. Its workers laid roads, erected dams, bridges, tunnels, and airports. They stocked rivers, made toys, sewed clothes, served millions of hot school lunches. When disasters struck they were there by the thousands to rescue the stranded. And all across the country the WPA's arts programs performed concerts, staged plays, painted murals on hospital walls, delighted children with circuses, created invaluable guidebooks. Politically controversial, the WPA was staffed by passionate believers and hated by conservatives. Its critics called its projects make-work and wags said its initials stood for "We Piddle Around." The contrary was true. Even today, more than sixty years after the WPA ceased to exist, the program's enduring legacy may be found in roads and highways still in use, LaGuardia Airport, the murals on the Ellis Island walls, dams and stadiums and libraries and city halls across the country. Nick Taylor, who collaborated with astronaut John Glenn on his memoir, has also written or collaborated on nine other nonfiction books, on subjects ranging from a memoir of his parents' final years to the invention of the laser and a paean to bass-fishing. He lives in New York City.

Nonfiction
Have you watched less-qualified people pass you by? Are you tired of waiting to be recognized and rewarded for the high quality of your work? Do you wonder what other people are asking for that you're not getting-and marvel that they have the nerve and skill to get what they ask for?

From the authors of the groundbreaking Women Don't Ask, praised by Business Week as "Compelling… explains a large part of the persistent pay differential between men and women," here is the first guide to negotiation that starts before you get to the bargaining table-showing women how to clear the first hurdle: learning to ask. Based on economist Linda Babcock's highly regarded studies on the high cost of women's reluctance to negotiate on their own behalf, Women Don't Ask outlined the problem: women's lack of negotiation skills costs them-literally-a fortune throughout their lifetime. ASK FOR IT is the solution, informing women of the importance of negotiation and teaching them how to do it effectively. Drawing from years of research and the authors' discovery that many women don't even recognize opportunities to negotiate, Babcock and Laschever have developed a program to help you ask for what you want. Whether you avoid negotiating like the plague or consider yourself hard-charging and lucky, Babcock and Laschever will help you recognize how much more you deserve-and show you how to get it. In chapters built around compelling case histories, the authors guide you step-by-step, offering crucial advice on how to identify what you're really worth, maximize your bargaining power, manage emotions on both sides of the table, and make sure you're treated fairly. Babcock and Laschever's approach can propel you to new places both professionally and personally and open doors you thought were closed. From PTA moms to high-flying career women and everyone in between, there is something in this book for women of all ages and lifestyles, because if you never hear no, you're not asking for enough. Linda Babcock is James M. Walton Professor of Economics at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is developing a program for a negotiation badge to be awarded by the Girl Scouts of America. Rolling out regionally this year, it is expected to be launched nationally in Fall 2007. Sara Laschever has written for The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, and Glamour, among other publications. She lives in Concord, Massachusetts. Babcock and Laschever are popular speakers at community and business groups nationwide. Visit their website, www.womendontask.com. Bantam published the reprint edition of Women Don't Ask ("This highly readable, thoroughly researched, and important book… should be read by anyone with a fear of negotiating, male or female."-The New York Times) in Spring 2007. British volume rights in ASK FOR IT are licensed to Piatkus Books.

THE BETRAYAL GAME by David L. Robbins
First Serial, British, Translation, Audio, and Performance: William Morris Agency, 212-586-5100 (P); 212-903-1418 (F)

February
Fiction

"Nobody is better than David L. Robbins at making yesterday feel like today and fiction feel like fact." -Lee Child

Can one man make history-and can another change it with a single bullet? It is a question that Professor Mikhail Lammeck has devoted his life to answering. An expert on history's great political assassinations, he arrives in Havana in the spring of 1961 to seek the answer first-hand. For the more he sees of Cuba's charismatic revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro, the more he is convinced that he is witnessing that rarest anomaly: the man who can change history… and who must be murdered. THE BETRAYAL GAME is the breathtaking new novel by David L. Robbins, an electrifying-and frighteningly plausible-thriller brimming with murderous suspense, impeccable historical detail, and richly resonant characters. Inspired by real, little-known suspicions and events during the early and frantic days of the Cold War, Robbins's astonishingly original tale is his latest to offer his "pitch-perfect blend of fiction and history" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). It is weeks before the Bay of Pigs invasion and the CIA wants Fidel Castro dead. So do Cuban exiles in Miami, the American mob, and the KGB. And Professor Mikhail Lammeck has made a devil's bargain in order to gain unprecedented access to the secret history of one of the 20th century's greatest coups. But, in so doing, he is thrust dead-center between a Cuban secret police captain and a chillingly amoral American CIA agent. And Lammeck finds himself no longer only studying history, but making it. He soon becomes the unwilling mentor of a young man who's arrived in Cuba-a confused Marine sharpshooter determined to become the century's most infamous assassin. In this ingenious thriller, David L. Robbins compels readers to question how Castro so narrowly escaped an onslaught of assassination attempts. David L. Robbins is the bestselling author of The Assassins Gallery, War of the Rats, Liberation Road, Last Citadel, Scorched Earth, and The End of War, all published and available from Bantam.

From the internationally bestselling author of The Brotherhood of the Holy Shroud ("An exuberant, deeply involved thriller," Kirkus Reviews) comes this electrifying new novel of suspense about an archeological discovery in the remote Iraqi desert-and a deadly struggle waged on the eve of war to uncover a truth 3,000 years old… In St. Peter's Basilica, a man sits in a confessional asking forgiveness for a murder he's about to commit… a young priest begins a desperate journey to stop him… and a ruthless race commences among the world's most powerful to claim a newly discovered cache of sacred clay texts inscribed with the story of the Creation as told by Abraham. This text predates the Bible by a thousand years and could be one of the most important discoveries of all time. Archaeologist Carla Tannenberg's announcement of the find has set off international shockwaves of outrage, contempt, and outright disbelief. While among four old friends bound for decades by a shared tragedy, Carla's claim has renewed their hunger for revenge against Carla's reclusive and legendary grandfather, Alfred, a man whose past reaches deep into the horrors of Nazi Germany. They will use any means, even his granddaughter, to destroy him. Amidst rumors of Iraq's imminent invasion, time is running out. As Carla and her husband Ahmet put together a ragtag team of renegade archaeologists and inexperienced students to excavate the Bible of Clay from deep within the heart of Iraq, another far more sinister team of profiteers is determined to get there first. Moving from the time of the Biblical patriarchs to the front lines of the present Iraqi conflict to the parties and backrooms of Washington, D.C., THE BIBLE OF CLAY is a thriller of unrelenting, thought-provoking, and all-too-plausible suspense. ** Licensed in twelve (12) countries **

Here is a witty and authoritative guide to the subtle-and not-so-subtle-signs your body may be using to alert you to your state of health. We all notice things about our bodies that don't seem quite right. Pale, yellow nails. Unusual body odors. Dry, brittle hair. Small growths that suddenly appear on the eyelids. Most of the time these problems will simply send you to your hairdresser, manicurist, or drugstore. But sometimes these signs can actually be symptoms of something much worse...

Do you think you may suffer from one of the following?

• Focal senile translucency of the sclera (a condition in which calcium deposits cause dark areas to appear on the white of the eye)

• Necrotizing sialometaplasia (a hole in the roof of your mouth)

• Exploding head syndrome (a condition in which you are periodically awakened by hearing a loud explosion in your head during sleep)

Don't worry! These are mild, harmless conditions that do not need to be treated.

But there are many symptoms that are not so benign:

• Selenosis, caused by an excess of the antioxidant selenium, will produce breath that smells like garlic, and can lead to neurological damage.

• Noise sensitivity may be a sign of magnesium deficiency.

• Corneal arcus, or rings around the eyes, may mean you are at an increased risk for heart disease.

• And if you are a frequent egg-white eater and find yourself losing a lot of hair, you may have developed a biotin deficiency.

Drawn from cutting-edge research and the latest scientific literature, and vetted by a panel of medical experts, this remarkable book lets you know which signals should send you to a doctor, and which to the drugstore, hairdresser, or cosmetologist. This comprehensive and fascinating guide covers every body part from head to toe-and everything in between-to help you decode the often mysterious messages your body sends you. And it includes historical trivia and fascinating factoids about each body area in question, plus an invaluable resource section. Whether you have a health concern or simply enjoy playing medical detective, BODY SIGNS will not only absorb and inform you, but will help you gain a more intimate understanding of the wondrous workings of your body. Joan Liebmann-Smith, Ph.D., is a medical sociologist and award-winning medical writer. Here, in a city of the dead where desire is very much alive and murder a pleasure for connoisseurs, an honest cop must face his own darkest impulses… There have been four victims already. "Just hearing Sarah Graves list the ways you can kill yourself fixing up an old house is a hoot," raves the New York Times Book Review. Her latest clever foray into the worlds of carpentry and crime proves once again why "anyone who can mix slaughter and screwdrivers is a genius" (Boston Herald). When antiquarian book expert Horace Rowbotham dies, his death is tied to a musty volume uncovered in the cellar of Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree's 1823 Federal-style fixer-upper. Jake's already got her hands full with a cast-iron bathtub that refuses to budge, but the suspects cannot be ignored: Horace's spoiled daughter, Liane, who has enough credit card debt to give killing her rich daddy a certain appeal and Bert Merkle, a local crackpot with a penchant for black magic and a lust for its artifacts-including antique texts inked in blood; and to make matters even worse, there is Dave DiMaio, a gun-toting stranger who seems ready to avenge his dear friend Horace by shooting anyone who gives him the slightest excuse. Jake's got to pull out the sharpest tools in her shed to get this job done... or she'll find herself the victim of a well-constructed killer. The author's novel, The Alibi Club (Bantam 9/2006), was named one of PW's "Best Books of 2006" and was a "Best Books of the Season" pick by the San Francisco Chronicle. Of her Jane Austen mysteries, The New York Times Book Review states, "Barron writes a lively adventure that puts warm flesh on historical bones. The nice thing is she does so in a literary style that would not put Jane Austen's nose out of joint!" Now, with the historical immediacy of Phillipa Gregory, the thrilling pacing of The Rule of Four, and her own signature, enthralling period detail, Stephanie Barron spins a tale set in Queen Victoria's troubled court about a dangerous secret that could topple thrones. In Windsor Castle, in 1861, Prince Albert, the Queen's Consort, lies dying of typhoid fever. Victoria summons Patrick Fitzgerald, the clever, embittered Irish barrister who helped defend Her Majesty's would-be-assassin twenty years earlier. Within hours, Fitzgerald's beautiful ward is nearly murdered, his chambers are ransacked, and a young girl lies dead in a shadowy back alley. Does an unknown force at Windsor want Fitzgerald dead? The answer is entangled in a rich tale of intrigue, seduction and betrayal partially narrated by 19th century Europe's most powerful monarch. With A FLAW IN THE BLOOD, Stephanie Barron brings us a tale as vibrant and commanding as the Queen herself, seamlessly blending rich history, electrifying suspense, and a brilliant imagination in an elegant thriller which is utterly convincing-and utterly surprising-to its very end. Stephanie Barron is the author of nine Jane Austen mysteries, including the recent Jane and the Barque of Frailty. As Francine Mathews, she is the author of The Cutout, The Secret Agent, Blown, and The Alibi Club. She is at work on her next novel of historical suspense.

Aaron David Miller, an advisor in every White House administration since Ronald Reagan's, participated in every negotiation the U.S. brokered between the Arabs and Israelis from 1985 until 2003. Drawing on his extraordinary participation, considerable skills as an analyst and negotiator, and exclusive interviews with all the major participants in the peace process during his tenure, including 3 U.S. presidents, 8 secretaries of state, Israeli prime ministers and foreign ministers, and the leaders of Egypt, Syria, Jordan and the Palestinians, Miller delivers an incomparable account of America's decades-long commitment to Arab-Israeli peace. In THE MUCH TOO PROMISED LAND, Miller examines the issue of whether peace in the Middle East is a self-defeating illusion, or whether a practical resolution still can be found. He addresses the problem that American leaders have wrestled with for more than half a century: Why has the world's greatest superpower failed to broker, or impose, a solution in the Middle East? Without partisanship or finger-pointing, and in a book that tackles the complicated issues of culture, religion, history, and national security that have defined-and often derailed-a half century of diplomacy, Miller lucidly and even-handedly records triumphs and failures on both sides of the negotiation table, and addresses how we got where we are today. Here is an insider's view of the peace process from a place at the negotiating table, filled with unforgettable stories and colorful behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Here, too, are new interviews with all the surviving key players, including Presidents Carter, Ford, Bush forty-one, as well as Arab and Israeli leaders, who disclose the inner thoughts and strategies that motivated them. Most important of all, Miller asks whether Israel really is the "much too promised land?" His position as an advisor to presidents, secretaries of state, and national security advisors has given him a unique perspective from which to frame and examine the issue. The result is an honest, critical, and certain to be controversial narrative; an insightful, first-person account offering a brilliant new analysis of the problem of Arab-Israeli peace and how, against all odds, it still might be solved. Aaron David Miller is a public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. For the last two decades, he has served as an advisor to six secretaries of state, helping to formulate U.S. policy on the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli peace process.

Could an adorable baby chimpanzee born in captivity and raised in a Manhattan apartment by an affluent family who treated him as one of their own bridge the gap between species and change the way we think about our relationship with animals? Here is the heartwarming and ultimately heartbreaking true story of an experiment undertaken with the best of human intentions and the chimpanzee chosen to see it through… The brainchild of Herbert S. Terrace, a psychologist at Columbia University, Project Nim was a groundbreaking study conceived to refute noted linguist Noam Chomsky's assertion that language was an exclusively human trait. But Dr. Terrace needed a family to raise Nim like a human child. Strikingly beautiful, confident, and the smartest student in Terrace's class, Stephanie LaFarge eagerly agreed to be Nim's surrogate mother. LaFarge took her new role seriously, loving and nurturing Nim as if he were her own flesh and blood-to the detriment of her own marriage. Nim's progress in learning sign language dazzled his family, and his legendary charm, mischievous sense of humor, and keen understanding of human nature won him admirers and press all over the world, including guest appearances on Sesame Street. But no one considered the long-term challenges of raising a chimp in the human world or what would happen when the academic funding ran out-and a full-grown Nim, sometimes aggressive and even dangerous, soon became too much for the LaFarges to handle. From the Upper West Side to his eventual incarceration at a medical lab, where his staunchest allies fought to save him from deadly medical tests, to the ranch where he spent his last years in a cage, this powerful book draws on interviews with the people who lived with Nim, dressed him, taught him, and loved him-and shows how, in the end, the humans he loved so much failed him. A wrenching yet uplifting page-turner, NIM CHIMPSKY is a powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and the limits-both human and animal-to bridging the gap between species. It is the portrayal of a remarkable chimpanzee whom you will never forget. Elizabeth Hess is a journalist and the author of Lost and Found: Dogs, Cats and Everyday Heroes at a Country Animal Shelter. She lives with her family in East Chatham, New York.

"A paean to womanhood, a celebration of friends, of family, and, last but hardly least, of female libido. Kris Radish creates characters that seek and then celebrate the discovery of a kind of women's innate power often hidden by fear." -Denver Post

A reading group favorite and the Book Sense-bestselling author of The Sunday List of Dreams ("Every page contains a warm fuzzy." -Publishers Weekly) makes her hardcover debut in the heart-tugging, tremendously witty story of one woman's poignant search for happiness… just beyond the front door of her own life. Addy Lipton is dying to give in to a wild desire she's been nurturing for years-to drive her '98 Toyota Celica through the closed garage door of the house she shares with her husband, Lucky, in Parker, PA. Fed up with Lucky and their boring, predictable, 28-year marriage, Addy suddenly feels Lucky understands her despair when he comes home with tickets to Costa Rica, hoping that the trip will save their failing marriage. But then Lucky ruptures a disc, cancelling their tropical retreat, and their adopted son, Mitchell, arrives home from college announcing his intention to drop out and seek his birth mother. With her sister's love and the support of Addy's abs-workout gal pals, the Sweat-Hers, Addy begins a crusade to revive her dreams-and she takes the women of Parker along for the ride. Soon the men realize they'll have to step up to the plate to keep their wives and lovers happy. And Addy will have to decide if the paradise she's creating in Parker is big enough for two.... Filled with small-town characters and big-time soul searching, this sparkling and inspirational tale will hit you where you live-and show you that just as happiness can get buried beneath the jumble of years, it can be rediscovered… if you look hard enough for it within your heart. Fiction

A tour de force of the imagination and a brilliant tale of rebellion, THUNDERER heralds the arrival of a gifted fantasy writer who has created a tale as wondrous and captivating as the world in which it is set. In this breathtaking debut novel by Felix Gilman, one man embarks on a thrilling and treacherous quest for his people's lost god. Arjun arrives in Ararat just as a magnificent winged creature swoops and sails over the city. For it is the day of the return of that long-awaited, unpredictable, mystical creature: The Great Bird. But does it come for good or ill? For one inhabitant, The Bird sparks a long dormant idea: to map the mapless city, and liberate its masses through the power of knowledge. As the creature soars across the land, shifting topography, changing the course of the river, and redrawing the territories of the city's avian life, crowds cheer and guns salute. Then The Bird's power is trapped within the hull of a floating warship called "Thunderer," an astounding and unprecedented weapon. The ship is transformed into a living temple to The Bird, a gift to be used, allegedly, in the interests of all of Ararat. Hurtled into this convulsing world is Arjun, an innocent who will unwittingly unleash a dark power beyond his imagining-and become entangled in a dangerous underground movement that will forever transform Ararat. As havoc overtakes the streets, Arjun dares to test the city's moving boundaries. For in a place teeming with divinities, he has come to search among them, not to hide. Gilman's richly textured story adds a new dimension to the ever popular urban fantasy genre spearheaded by China Mieville, Alan Campbell, and Naomi Novik. Felix Gilman lives in New York City. THUNDERER is his first novel. Look for the sequel coming from Bantam in 2009.

Now, the stolen power of a demi-goddess, bound into a handful of colored crystals and a child's book of stories will change everything… When young Guerrier rescues an orphaned street waif, little does he know that she is the daughter of a magus who met his end on their pyres-or that she is guarded by an aethyric spirit-and driven to find the traitor who condemned her father to flames. And she will craft herself into a weapon… aimed at the heart of the man she despises. GARDENING AT THE DRAGON'S GATE: At Work In the Wild and Cultivated World
by Wendy Johnson; Illustrated by Davis TeSelle
British, Translation, Audio, and Performance:
Michael Katz, Agent, 530-478-9048

March
Nonfiction

Part memoir of a passionate gardener, part master class in organic gardening, part meditation on the natural world, GARDENING AT THE DRAGON'S GATE stands squarely in the tradition of Thoreau's Walden, Beston's The Outermost House, and the work of Barry Lopez and Annie Dillard. For more than thirty years, Wendy Johnson has been meditating and gardening at the Green Gulch Farm and Green Dragon Zen Temple in northern California, where the fields curve like an enormous green dragon between the hills and the ocean. Out of her lifetime of experience has emerged this extraordinary celebration of inner and outer growth, a meditation on how the garden cultivates the gardener as she double-digs beds, heaps up compost, plants flowers and fruit trees, and harvests bushels of organic vegetables. Johnson is a hands-on, how-to gardener, and her book is filled with practical knowledge and fascinating garden lore. But she is also a lover of the wild and weedy, and she evokes these untamable forces in exquisite prose that stands in the great tradition of American nature writing. This is a big book-in size, in conception, in richness of content-and it is illustrated with fine duotone drawings throughout by award-winning artist and printmaker Davis TeSelle. Wendy Johnson is one of the founders of the organic Farm and Garden Program at Green Gulch Farm and Green Dragon Zen Temple in Marin County, where she lived with her family from 1975 to 2000. She has been teaching gardening and environmental education since the early 1980s, helping to establish many garden programs in public schools, local communities, and hospice centers throughout the Bay Area. In 2000 Wendy and her husband, Peter Rudnick, received the annual Sustainable Agriculture Award from the National Ecological Farming Association. Since 1995 she has written a quarterly column, "On Gardening," for Tricycle Magazine:The Buddhist Review. She was honored in The Best Science and Nature Writing 2000, published by Houghton Mifflin. Wendy is a mentor and advisor to the Edible Schoolyard program of the Chez Panisse Foundation, a project which she has been involved with since its inception in 1995. This is her first book. Davis TeSelle holds an M.F.A. in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and received the 2003 James D. Phelan Award for printmaking in California. Fiction

As he proved in his debut novel The Patron Saint of Plagues, Barth Anderson is a master at combining mainstream storytelling with subtle fantasy. The San Diego Union-Tribune calls The Patron Saint of Plagues, "a cinematic, futuristic techno-thriller with smarts and heart... this cleverly managed skein of cliffhangers and revelations begs to be filmed." Salon.com claims, "Anderson has some serious writing chops, and he delivers a page turner that is at once a medical thriller, cyberpunk romp and provocative tease... a novel about race and class, science and faith." Now, in THE MAGICIAN AND THE FOOL, Anderson is back with a novel that follows the intertwined paths of a down-and-out former professor and a homeless man known as "The Boy King," as they pursue a mystical treasure many are willing to sacrifice fortunes and lives for: the earliest known tarot deck. Years ago, fallen scholar Jeremiah Rosemont left the bitter rivalries of academia. Now he lives a simple nomadic existence in South America, far from the arguments that once defined his life. But he can't outrun his past… or the dangerous truth that lies within his abandoned studies. Following an enigmatic summons to Rome, Rosemont finds himself at the center of a mystery that dates back to the fall of Troy. As Rosemont delves into the tarot's unsettling secret origins, his own fate is inexorably intertwined with that of the Boy King, a man with an unspeakable gift… and a mysterious past of his own. For these two men-and the demons, dupes, and power seekers drawn to them-the cards will reveal everything, even the shattering, unseen truths of human life itself… Barth Anderson lives in Minnesota. His short stories have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including On Spec, Asimov's, Mojo Conjure Stories, and Polyphony 3. He is the winner of the Spectrum Award for Best Short Fiction in 2004.

THE ANATOMY OF DECEPTION
by Lawrence Goldstone
British, Translation, and Performance:
International Creative Management, 212-556-5600 (P);
212-556-5665 (F)

February
Fiction

In the tradition of Caleb Carr's The Alienist and Matthew Pearl's The Dante Club, Lawrence Goldstone's mesmerizing forensic thriller thrusts us into the operating rooms, drawing rooms, and back alleys of 1889 Philadelphia, where a doctor grapples with the principles of scientific process to track a daring killer. In the morgue of a Philadelphia hospital, physicians uncover the corpse of a beautiful young woman. What they see takes their breath away. Within days, one doctor, Ephraim Carroll, strongly suspects that he knows the woman's identity… and the horrifying events that led to her death. But in this richly atmospheric debut novel-an ingenious blend of history, suspense and early forensic science-the most compelling chapter is yet to come as the young doctor is plunged into a maze of murder, secrets, and unimaginable crimes. Peopled with vibrant, real-life characters like William Osler, hailed as the Father of Modern Medicine; famed surgeon William Stewart Halsted, who performed the first emergency blood transfusion; and the painter Thomas Eakins, THE ANATOMY OF DECEPTION brings to life a little-known and exciting turning-point in American medical history, when ignorant butchery gave way to intelligent surgery, as it tells the story of a young doctor forced to confront an agonizing moral choice between exposing a killer and undoing a wrong, or, quite possibly, protecting the future of medicine itself. Lawrence Goldstone, with his wife Nancy, is the author of two critically acclaimed narrative histories of medicine and anatomy. He has written for the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Miami Herald. He lives in Westport, Connecticut, where he is at work on his next novel of historical suspense, which Delacorte will publish in 2009.

Ron Leshem makes his American debut with BEAUFORT. A wrenching novel set at the time of Israel's occupation of Lebanon, it is the winner of Israel's top literary prize, and a Berlin International Film Festival award-winning movie. Beaufort, in southern Lebanon, is a world of its own, a Crusader fort in the heart of enemy territory, in a deadly no-man's zone of land mines and terrorists. Here young Israeli soldiers charged with protecting Israel's borders live in an isolated state of heightened alert, with its unique rules and its own language. Written as the diary of Liraz Liberti, the twenty-one-year-old head of a thirteen-man commando team stationed at Beaufort during the last winter of Israeli occupation, this brilliant coming-of-age novel addresses the horrors and absurdities of war head-on, as seen through the eyes of the young men who must fight it. "A spellbinding, gripping book that leaves you no choice but to feel that claustrophobic military outpost drenched in fear right inside your belly."(Israeli Army Radio). Ron Leshem is deputy director in charge of programming at Channel Two, Israel's main commercial television network. BEAUFORT won the Sapir Prize-Israel's top literary award-in 2006. The film version of BEAUFORT, which Leshem co-authored with director Joseph Cedar, won the Berlin International Film Festival's Silver Bear for Best Director. Leshem lives in Tel Aviv and is at work on his second novel.

By the time he got to Iraq, Chris Hunter was one of the most experienced counter-bomb operators in the British armed forces, having served in bomb disposal operations in the Balkans, East Africa, Northern Ireland, Columbia, and Afghanistan. But Iraq is different. It is a place where terrorists and soldiers rapidly climb a deadly learning curve. New terrorist bomb devices lead new allied disposal tactics in ever escalating counter-measures between combatants, capturing both innocent and killer in the carnage. Written with an immediacy found in the best of war reportage, EIGHT LIVES DOWN is the unfiltered, inside story of deadly, high pressure, high stakes counter IED operations in Iraq. As Hunter's unit became more skilled at disabling bombs, the bombers became more skilled and determined-until Hunter ended up with a price on his life and bombs designed just for him by both Sunni and Shia terrorists. From a horrifying ambush in the heart of Shia-dominated Basra to the chilling interrogation of a captured bomber, Hunter guides us through his service in Iraq and introduces us to the rare men of his unit. A first-of-its-kind account, EIGHT LIVES DOWN is an eloquent, immediate and heart-breaking chronicle of a man clinging to his sanity, his marriage, and his duty to succeed in a war unlike any in history. Filled with brave characters, piercing descriptions of the war zone, and an unusual emotional potency, EIGHT LIVES DOWN is a revealing portrait of the world's most dangerous job in the world's most dangerous place. Chris Hunter is currently working as an intelligence officer on the Defense Intelligence Staff in Whitehall and is chairman of the Technical Committee of the Institute of Explosives Engineers. He works regularly with the CIA, DIA, and US Special Forces. He was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for his actions during his tour in Iraq. THE NIGHT FOLLOWING by Morag Joss

Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency, Inc., 212-794-1082

March
Fiction

The award-winning author who crafts "psychological suspense of the highest order" (Publishers Weekly), and who critics compare to Ruth Rendell, Minette Walters, and P.D James, returns with THE NIGHT FOLLOWING, a haunting Hitchcockian exploration of the intersection of two lives following a tragic hit-and-run death. It took only an instant: Suddenly, a woman was dead and two marriages irrevocably shattered. And as the dead woman's grief-stricken husband slides into darkness and decline, a silent figure stands in the shadows of his garden, waiting to approach him. A story of loss, lies, and wrongdoing, astonishingly complex and extravagantly inventive, THE NIGHT FOLLOWING is also a love story and the extraordinarily moving story of a killer's journey from the shadows into the light. It confirms the masterful talent of a writer who is both tender and unflinching in her examination of human frailty-and the shattering repercussions of deception. Morag Joss is the author of Half Broken Things, which won the CWA Silver Dagger Award, Puccini's Ghost, and three mystery novels set in Bath.

From an exciting new voice in fiction comes a smart, sexy, hilarious novel that exposes what really goes on in the kitchens and coveted corner booths of Manhattan's hottest celebrity restaurants. Erin Edwards never saw it coming. Downsized from her high-level marketing job, Erin panics as her career goes into freefall. Why else would the savvy twenty-nine-year-old, who once thought nothing of switching tables ("no one likes to sit by the kitchen"), take a job as a… waitress? Life at exclusive Roulette Restaurant is even worse than she imagined-from the deranged celebrity chef to the terrifying food critic who could make or break them… But things look up when she waits on Daniel Fratelli, a gorgeous TV news producer who seems totally out of her league. And just as her restaurant career seems almost on track, a series of disastrous missteps sends her right back to the bottom of the food chain. That's when Erin comes up with an idea that could take her life in a whole new direction. Suddenly, she's pursued by everyone from major New York power brokers to the man of her dreams. And that's just the first course… TURNING TABLES is a delicious debut! Rose and Heather MacDowell are identical twin sisters who've waited tables in some of the best (and worst!) of New York's fashionable dining establishments. Today they live in California with their husbands, dine out often, and are big tippers. And they are at work on their next novel, to be published by Delacorte.
