BABYLON RISING:
The Europa Conspiracy
by Tim LaHaye and Bob Phillips
Performance: Joel Gotler Associates, 310-786-8931
|
October
Fiction
|
Tim LaHaye, creator of the phenomenally
successful Left Behind books, once again mixes biblical prophecy and
high-octane adventure in the third book of his Top-10 New York
Times bestselling series for Bantam Books, Babylon Rising. The
first two bestselling Babylon Rising novels established Michael Murphy
as one of the most exciting heroes of recent times, a biblical archaeologist
whose incredible discoveries do more than simply take him to dangerous,
exotic places-they place him four-square in the path of the greatest
evil facing mankind today. Now, in BABYLON
RISING: THE EUROPA CONSPIRACY, the search
for one of the Bible's most fascinating and prophetically significant
artifacts pits Murphy against an opponent he knows only too well:
Talon, a man whose appetite for mayhem is matched only by that of
his shadowy masters. And their dire plans for the world are about
to take a terrible leap forward unless Murphy can stop them… With
THE EUROPA CONSPIRACY, Tim LaHaye once again shows how his
thrill-a-minute storytelling and deep understanding of the Bible have
combined to make him one of the most popular fiction authors of today.
Tim LaHaye's two novels in this series, Babylon Rising and
The Secret on Ararat, are widely published overseas and enjoy
sixteen foreign licenses between them. Mr. LaHaye is at work on the
next novel in the series for Bantam Books.

A BRIEFER HISTORY OF TIME by
Stephen Hawking
and Leonard Mlodinow
Translation, Audio, and Performance:
Writer's House, Inc. 212-685-2400
|
October
Nonfiction
|
In this heavily updated, revised and
highly readable edition of the renowned New York Times bestselling
book that has sold over 9 million copies in 40 languages, noted theoretical
physicist Stephen Hawking presents for the first time a condensed
and accessible version of A Brief History of Time. Despite
the original's engaging narrative and lively humor, readers have had
difficulty understanding some of Professor Hawking's most important
concepts. Hawking cares passionately about his subject and he wants
his readers to understand and care about it, too. So, he has undertaken
to modify the original text of A Brief History Of Time, emphasizing
and illuminating only the most important material a non-scientist
needs to know and letting go of the more abstruse aspects of the original.
The new book is fewer than 180 pages and includes 35 informational,
four-color illustrations that appear throughout the book to further
clarify the text. In A BRIEFER HISTORY OF TIME, Hawking and
his collaborator, the physicist and writer Leonard Mlodinow, have
achieved an accessible level of clarity and brevity of text by eliminating
content more suitable to a college-level course in cosmology, and
by expanding upon the book's most important concepts in a clearer,
probing, and leisurely narrative. The text has been updated to include
the latest theoretical and observational results, including advances
in string theory that suggest a more unified theory of physics, as
well as observations made by COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer satellite)
and the Hubble telescope. Lastly, the authors' concluding message
is one of hope: while science remains far from achieving the goal
of a unified theory of all the forces of physics-the dream of Einstein
and many others-the progress made since the work was last published
and detailed in these pages gives new reason to believe it is achievable.
That's a message that Hawking fans will embrace anew.

CHILDREN OF THE
SERPENT GATE:
Book Three of The Tears of Artamon by Sarah Ash
First Serial, British, Translation, Audio, and Performance: Writer's
House, Inc. 212-685-2400
|
October
Fiction
|
Her U.S. debut was critically acclaimed.
Her second novel won her more readers. Now, Sarah Ash's concluding
novel in her The Tears of Artamon trilogy, a novel of war,
magic, and bloodlines, will show readers that she absolutely belongs
in the same catergory as Terry Goodkind and Spectra's own George R.R.
Martin. In CHILDREN OF THE SERPENT GATE, Ash mixes myth, legend
and politics to take us to a place that feels very much like 19th
century Europe-only one with a creature that exists somewhere between
a dragon and the old legends of the Drakhoul. As one man struggles
to rebuild an ancient empire united under his control, his lust for
power leads him to release five of the dragon-demons known as the
drakhouls. Now, one of these creatures dwells within him. But, even
as he gains new power, his hold over his empire is crumbling. A rival
nation, determined to rid the world of the drakhouls once and for
all, seeks to repair the ancient staff of Saint Sergius. In the hands
of an innocent, this staff could banish the drakhouls forever... but
where is such a truly innocent soul to be found? Through the ultimate
of ironies, the answer may lie in the form of the emperor's own beloved
and crippled daughter, who is to be turned into a tool to use against
him. With this richly imagined tale filled with superbly drawn characters
who are neither wholly good nor wholly evil, Sarah Ash concludes her
epic trilogy in grand style, paying homage to the genre's traditions
while carving a refreshingly bold place for herself. The previous
two titles in this trilogy include: Lord of Snow and Shadows
and Prisoner of the Iron Tower. Sarah Ash lives with her husband
and two sons in Beckenham, Kent.

FIFTY DEGREES BELOW
by Kim Stanley Robinson First Serial, British, Translation, Audio,
and Performance: Ralph Vicinanza, Ltd. 212-924-7090
|
November
Fiction |
Bestselling, award-winning
author Kim Stanley Robinson continues his groundbreaking new trilogy
with the second of his near-future eco-thrillers set in our nation's
capital. Intelligent, suspenseful, and profoundly moving, this is
a tale of everyday people caught up in extraordinary circumstances
as science, technology, and global climatic changes collide in Robinson's
cautionary tale of global warming. Kim Stanley Robinson has long been
known for his ability to humanize science: to take big, high-concept
issues and put a very real and approachable face on them, showing
us the very real costs and consequences of our actions. Here he gives
us the unflinching truth about global warming through an intimate
look at a handful of characters whose lives are irreparably changed
by it. In this near-future world of scientific advancement and international
politics, many are closing their eyes to the dangerous signs of global
warming and its consequences. Yet in FIFTY DEGREES BELOW the
crisis has come to America's shores. Large chunks of San Diego have
eroded into the sea, and Washington is under water. The time for action
now is at hand. Global warming is causing the polar ice caps to melt
and shutting down the Gulf Stream-and it very well may trigger a new
Ice Age. The first book in this trilogy, Forty Signs Of Rain,
was chosen as Required Reading by the New York Post, and was
#5 of 10 of the books choosen as The Year's Top Speculative Fiction
Titles of 2004 by the Kansas City Star. It received strong
praise from The New York Times Book Review ("Provide[s] an
unforgettable demonstration of what can go wrong when an ecological
balance is upset"), to the San Francisco Chronicle ("Robinson
knows how to juxtapose the quotidian details of urban life with really
big, really scary environmental disasters"), among others. Winner
of the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards, Kim Stanley Robinson has written
ten previous books, including the bestselling Mars trilogy. His most
recent work, The Years of Rice and Salt, was named one of the
best science fiction novels of 2002 by Book magazine.

NO TRUE
GLORY: A Frontline Account of the Battle for Falluja

October
Nonfiction
|
**Universal-based Double
Feature partners Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher have optioned the
upcoming book "No True Glory: The Battle for Fallujah" with Harrison
Ford to star.**
For months author F. J. "Bing" West lived among the Marines who besieged
the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, and interviewed members of the
three US Army units that fought in that factious city before the Marines
arrived. With access from frontline personnel to senior policymakers
and negotiators, West's astonishing account takes us into strategy
discussions between generals, on tense night patrols, and into fighting
from rooftop to rooftop to tell the story that hasn't been told in
the press or on the nightly news. The Marines originally planned to
slip into Fallujah "as soft as fog." But in March 2004, after a mob
killing and mutilating four American contractors was recorded in images
that horrified the world, the Marines attacked. West recounts the
ferocious street battles that followed, the stiff resistance and shocking
violence that caught many in our military and government off guard,
and the sweeping US counterattack that outraged the Arab world. We
go behind the scenes to the intense negotiations to persuade Iraqis
to take charge and hunt down terrorists like al-Zarqawi, who were
using the city as a sanctuary-negotiations whose ramifications will
impact Iraq for years to come. But the real focus is upon the heroic,
everyday efforts of the American fighting soldier and Marine confronting
the key paradox of the war: that the Iraqis both wanted and didn't
want Americans in their country. NO TRUE GLORY is a firsthand
account of the gritty fighting, political maneuvering, and ongoing
struggle in this crucial city-a microcosm of the confused and frustrating
Iraqi war.

A FIELD GUIDE TO BUYING ORGANIC
by Luddene Perry and Dan Schultz
Performance: Irene Skolnick Agency, Inc. 212-727-3648
|
September
Nonfiction
|
From a pioneer in the
organic movement, this is the first practical, fully illustrated guide
to making good, healthy food choices designed to help consumers decide
which organic foods are worth the investment and which conventional
foods they can buy with confidence. From produce to packaged goods,
sales of organic foods are growing at 20% or more each year, despite
a cost average of 60% more than conventional food and consumer uncertainty
of just what they are getting for their money. As high-priced organic
food moves onto mainstream supermarket shelves, consumers need to
know exactly what they are getting for their food dollars and how
best to spend their money. No other book fills this niche-other titles
are either nesting guides to a natural lifestyle or strident polemics
advocating organic practices. Ludenne Perry, an organic farmer, educator,
and businesswoman, considers nutrition, taste, environmental factors,
and animal welfare concerns to help us decide which organic foods
are worth the investment, and which conventional foods we can buy
with confidence. Among her book's many great features readers will
find:
* The first-ever Organic Shoppers' Profile, a brief self-test
that weighs the importance a shopper places on the benefits of buying
organic and her organic shopping habits.
* An aisle-by-aisle guide that provides fast access to background
information about the most popular organic produce, dairy, meat and
poultry, baked goods, nuts, seeds, and grains, processed and packaged
foods, and drinks.
* Most national brands, many regional brands and even several
small farms.
* An illustrated section highlighting each brand's logo (so
you can identify the products you're looking for as you fly through
the supermarket), contact information and availability.
Luddene began her career in organics almost 40 years ago with a small
plot in Colorado. As time passed, she recognized the need for standards
in the industry; so in 1992 she started her own certifying company
where she pioneered numerous processes for insuring organic integrity.
Her innovations helped to make organic labeling possible. She is a
member of the Independent Organic Inspectors Association. Today Perry
is a farmer and teacher of horticultural food production, garden and
landscape design based in Minneapolis. Dan Schultz most recently collaborated
on Paths Are Made by Walking with Therese Jacobs-Stewart.

Whitney Gaskell, author of Pushing
30-- praised by Publishers Weekly as "A sprightly debut...
breezy prose, sharp wit... a delightful romantic comedy heroine" --and
True Love (And Other Lies), returns with a new, hilarious,
and sophisticated romantic comedy. SHE, MYSELF & I introduces
us to the three Cassel sisters who are genetically related, but who
couldn't be more different from each other. Paige, the oldest, is
meticulously responsible and has sworn off men since being left by
her gay husband. Sophie is fun-loving and gregarious, but has become
a hormonal bitch on wheels during her first pregnancy. And Mickey,
the youngest, is an academic superstar planning a career in medicine.
But lately, each sister is examining her own life, and all are acting
out of character. Paige has started seeing someone totally wrong-but
perhaps appropriate-for her; Sophie frets that getting married and
having children instead of a career may have been the wrong decision
for her; and Mickey can't bring herself to tell her family that she's
abandoned medicine. Throw in a pair of parents who went through the
"Divorce from Hell" years ago and now are surprisingly friendly, and
you have a recipe for a very smart, pacey, funny novel. Whitney Gaskell
grew up in Syracuse, New York, and is a graduate of Tulane Law School.
She worked for several years as a reluctant lawyer before writing
her first novel, Pushing 30. She lives in Florida with her
husband and son, and is at work on her fourth novel for Bantam Books.

VENISS
UNDERGROUND by Jeff Vandermeer

|
October
Fiction
|
A finalist for the World Fantasy Award,
Bram Stoker Award, International Horror Guild Award, this haunting
novel explores the limits of love, memory, and obsession in a landscape
that defies the boundaries of the imagination. VENISS UNDERGROUND
is a tour de force of the imagination. Itis the story of the mysterious
city of Veniss, told in three compelling voices. First, the tale of
a failed artist seeking to escape his demons in the city's shadowy
underground-- and in doing so, making a deal with the devil himself.
Part two introduces his enigmatic sister, Nicola, and her search for
her lost brother before she, too, suddenly disappears. Finally, the
last, harrowing section follows Nicola's half-man, half-golem lover
as he travels deep beneath the surface to confront her killer in the
heart of the Underground's bizarre, hallucinatory landscape. By turns
beautiful, horrifying, delicate, and heartbreaking, VENISS UNDERGROUND
illuminates the strength of the human heart, even a broken one, and
the weakness of the flesh. VanderMeer is a rising star whose small
press publications have garnered him both fan and reviewer acclaim,
as well as numerous award nominations. VanderMeer has won the World
Fantasy Award twice. His work has been nominated for the Hugo Award,
the Philip K. Dick Award, the International Horror Guild Award, the
Bram Stoker Award, and the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. His books
have made the year's best lists of Amazon.com, Publishers Weekly,
Publishers' News, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles
Weekly, and Locus. In 2003, SF Site's reviewers
voted VanderMeer's short fiction collection City Of Saints And
Madmen their book of the year. In 2001, Locus Online named
VanderMeer one of the top ten SF/fantasy writers in the world. Reviewers
and readers alike eagerly anticipate each new project from this author-and
our special edition of VanderMeer's first novel will make them happy.

A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES by

October
Fiction
|
Here is the long-awaited
sixth volume in Diana Gabaldon's epic New York Times bestselling
"Outlander" saga-- a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of
the genre's most popular and beloved authors. Diana Gabaldon has entertained
scores of readers with her heart-stirring stories and remarkable characters.
The five volumes of her bestselling saga featuring 18th century Scotsman
James Fraser and his 20th century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall,
have nearly five million copies in print in the U.S. and are strong
backlist sellers. In A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES, on the eve
of the American Revolution, nothing's sure in life but death and taxes.
In 1772 the long fuse of rebellion has been lit. Men lie dead in the
streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina isolated
cabins burn. With unpardoned Regulators, agitating Whigs, and the
vigilantes of the Committees of Safety at large, Governor Josiah Martin
needs someone to unite the backcountry, pacify the seething resentments
of the settlers, and keep the mountains safe for King and Crown. Once
again, everyone agrees that Jamie Fraser is the man for the job. But,
he has knowledge that places him in an impossible position. Jamie's
wife, Claire, their daughter, and son-in-law are time travelers and
have told him that three years hence, the shot heard around the world
will be fired, and the conflict's end will bring independence-with
those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And, knowledge of
a more personal tragedy is revealed in a tiny clipping from The
Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports the destruction
of the house on Fraser's Ridge-and the death by fire of James Fraser
and his kin. For the first time, Jamie hopes the time-travelers in
his family are wrong about the future. Diana Gabaldon is the author
of eight previous national bestselling novels-seven of them part of
the "Outlander" saga. She lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.

EMBRACING THE INFIDEL
by Behzad Yaghmaian Performance: Mendel Media Group, 646-239-9896
|
December
Nonfiction
|
From the slums of Istanbul and Bulgaria
to migrant camps in Greece to safe houses in France and the United
Kingdom, Behzad Yaghamaian has traveled the past two years in the
netherworld of Muslim migration to the West. EMBRACING THE INFIDEL
is the first book ever to examine intimately the culture, politics,
hopes and dreams of today's Muslim migrants, following their journey
in search of a better life in the West. It offers an often neglected,
human perspective of these displaced people by a writer who lived
and traveled with the people featured in the book. The events of September
11th and the subsequent war on terror completely changed the world
of migration and all but closed Western borders to Muslim immigration
as it raised feelings of fear, distrust, and intrigue about these
persons. Yet, displaced Muslims constitute an increasingly larger
percent of migrants in transit and their numbers in camps bordering
Western Europe are growing. EMBRACING THE INFIDEL tells the
stories of a few of these powerless, often stereotyped, people in
words and stunning black and white photographs. It follows several
Muslim men and mothers with small children on their journey in search
of economic opportunity and religious freedom. From 2002 to 2003,
author Behzad Yaghmaian lived among Muslim migrants-in slums, transition
camps, and safe houses-and recorded their experiences. The result
is a rare, firsthand account of the hopes, dreams, fears, and everyday
struggles of these displaced individuals and families. At a time when
immigrants are too often reduced to statistics, Yaghmaian's book provides
a one-of-a-kind portrait of this marginalized group. Timely, well-written,
and utterly compelling, EMBRACING THE INFIDEL is a necessary
contribution to our understanding of our culture, our politics, and
the future of our social landscape. Born in Iran and nationalized
in the United States, Behzad Yaghmaian has traveled extensively in
both the Third World and Europe. From 1998 to 1999, he was a columnist
for the popular Iranian newspaper, Neshat, and over the past 15 years
he has studied, taught, and written about issues of political economy,
globalization, and the Middle East for publications such as The
Chicago Tribune, Le Monde Diplomatique, and the online
journal, CounterPunch. His first book, Social Change in
Iran: An Eyewitness Account of Dissent Defiance, and New Movements
for Rights, was published by the State University of New York
Press in 2002.

The definitive book on Google-the
enormously successful, populist media company powered by the world's
most advanced technology, a technology which has transformed access
to information about everybody and everything into an instant worldwide
search engine. In just six short years:
* An idea born in the minds of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, two Stanford
graduate students who were looking for a way to make information easier
to find on the Internet, has gone from a tiny company worth nothing
to one with a stock market value in the billions of dollars-and rising.
* A new verb, as in "to google" something or someone, has entered
the global language.
* Two hundred million times a day, every day, someone in the
world is using Google to search for a name, a concept, a craft, a
bit of history. They need only enter their query on the Google site,
and in less than a second its search engine will produce every mention
of their subject on the internet.
To tell the astonishing story of how all this came to be, David Vise
uses a chronological narrative, his skill at analyzing and synthesizing
complex subjects, and his special access to the people who created
and continue to make Google the hottest business, media and technology
story of our time. Google company executives have offered the author
access to senior executives, founders, and other employees for all
relevant information. This book will appeal to not only those involved
in technology, business, and finance, but to the millions of ordinary
people who use Google every day. David Vise is a Pulitzer-Prize winning
reporter for The Washington Post. His current beat is Google,
America Online and the evolution of the Internet. A graduate of the
University of Pennsylvania, Vise holds an MBA from the Wharton School.

PREGNANCY BLUES:
What Every Woman Needs to Know about Depression During Pregnancy
by Dr. Shaila Kulkarni Misri
Performance:
Lowenstein-Yost Associates, Inc. 212-206-1630
|
September
Nonfiction
|
In this groundbreaking work, the first
book of its kind to explore depression during pregnancy, Dr. Shaila
Kulkarni Misri, a leading Ob-Gyn and reproductive psychiatrist, draws
on her twenty-five years of clinical practice to offer hope, help,
and healing-as well as a provocative, myth-shattering examination
of a subject that has too long been shrouded in darkness and misconceptions.
Over the past decade, postpartum depression has been widely acknowledged,
treated, and written about, but until very recently, prenatal depression,
which occurs during pregnancy and affects 15%-20% of all pregnant
women-nearly twice as many women as those who are diagnosed with postpartum
depression-has rarely been discussed in mainstream media or recognized
by doctors. Now this is starting to change, largely because of the
work of Dr. Shaila Kulkarni Misri, who is an acknowledged expert in
the field of reproductive mental health. She has cared for and done
studies on depressed pregnant women for over twenty-five years. In
this book, she examines in depth what every woman needs to know about
pregnancy and depression before, during, and after childbirth, and
offers a range of treatment plans. PREGNANCY BLUES also looks
at the underlying beliefs about pregnancy and motherhood, and explores
how they have led to the radical under-diagnosis and under-treatment
of this major women's health issue. Some of her statements, findings,
and recommendations will attract controversy. For example, she argues
for the use of anti-depressants in pregnant women, when needed, though
she advocates talk therapy, too. Perhaps most reassuring to all women,
she shatters the myth that pregnant women are always happy. Dr. Shaila
Kulkarni Misri is the leading reproductive psychiatrist in North America,
and is internationally recognized as a pioneer in women's mental health
and reproductive issues. She is the founder and director of Reproductive
Mental Health at both St. Paul's Hospital and BC Women's Hospital
& Health Centre in Vancouver, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
and Ob/Gyn at the University of British Columbia.

The March 2, 2002 mission was straightforward:
three men-Navy SEAL Neil Roberts, Air Force Combat Controller John
Chapman, and Army Ranger platoon commander Nathan Self-were to occupy
an observation post high in the Afghanistan mountains on Takur Ghar,
a snowy, 10,400 foot peak, and track Al Qaeda forces below. But what
began as a straightforward insertion by helicopter on a desolate mountainside
turned into a rescue operation and a 17-hour pitched battle between
Al Qaeda rebels and a group of America's elite forces. When it was
all over, only one of the three survived. The first full report of
the first true test of arms between American forces and Al Qaeda,
ROBERTS RIDGE is a no-holds-barred account of modern warfare,
the exhilaration of close quarter combat, and the heroism of the men
who fought and endured that day until every last one of them was pulled
off the mountain-dead or alive. The ordeal revealed serious shortcomings
in military coordination and communications, but highlighted the extraordinary
commitment of American soldiers not to leave behind a fallen comrade.
Malcolm Macpherson's searing narrative draws from the author's unprecedented
access to participants and to previously unreported documents. Macpherson
is a journalist and author. He served in the Marine Corps and as a
staff journalist for Time and Newsweek. Most recently,
he reported from Iraq on assignment with Time.

Now, in SKINNY BITCHING, Jenny tackles the big "3-0" in
a collection of essays about finding herself no longer a twentysomething
but a solid married adult with a mortgage who is not ready or
interested in the 'burbs or SUVs. With chapter heads that make
you shout, "Yes!" she writes of realizing you're not going to
lose those last ten pounds; resisting your pregnant friends' warnings
that your biological clock is running down; realizing that now
that you finally know what you want in a husband, it's too late
to exchange him; why an affair sounds more romantic than it is;
the sudden appearance of stretch marks and moles, and saying goodbye
to all that is cool in your life: giving up smoking, bar hopping,
following bands… Jenny Lee lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts,

From the editors of the classic anthology
Letters of the Century (The Dial Press, 1999 -- 125,000 copies
sold), comes a unique portrait of American history, told through the
letters of women, famous and everyday alike. Arranged chronologically
by era and illustrated with over 100 photographs, the more than 400
letters by women collected in this volume give us history on a palpably
human scale. For most of America's existence, women had no public
forum in which to express the way they saw their own country. Letter
writing was one of their few options for recording what they saw of,
how they felt about, and how they helped shape the world around them.
From a frontierswoman writing back home in 1846 to a soldier's wife
e-mailing her husband in Iraq in 2004, the voices in WOMEN'S LETTERS
are the best snapshots of women's feelings, thoughts, and opinions
throughout our history. The letters, by both famous and unknown writers,
are arranged chronologically within 9 sections, from "Revolution 1775-1799"
to "Just Yesterday 1980-2004." At the beginning of each section there
are two pages of relevant historical facts and each letter has an
introduction setting it in an historical context. With the same discerning
taste that compelled Time to say that Letters Of The Century
"renders a more definitive portrait of America's past 99 years than
would all the centennial books laid decade to decade...an exceptional
bedside companion," editors Grunwald and Adler have created a companion
volume in WOMEN'S LETTERS that is as much an American history
lesson as it is a literary experience. Lisa Grunwald, a former magazine
editor, is the author of the novels Summer, The Theory of
Everything, New Year's Eve, and the forthcoming Whatever
Makes You Happy. Stephen J. Adler is a deputy managing editor
of The Wall Street Journal and author of The Jury: Trial
and Error in the American Courtroom. Grunwald and Adler live with
their two children in New York City.
