Ask For It and The Wise Heart Nominated as “Books for a Better Life”
Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever’s Ask For It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Really Want and The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield were each nominated for a Books for A Better Life Award. The former was recognized in the motivational category and the latter in the spirituality category. Books for a Better Life honors the best self-improvement titles of the past year, and is presented by the New York City chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Manhattan on Monday, February 23.
The Snowball Leads BD Presence on New York Times Bestseller List
Bantam Dell has three recurring hits and a new bestseller on this weeks New York Times list. The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder tops the Hardcover Nonfiction list as the #1 bestseller for the second week in a row and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows remains on as the #15 Hardcover Fiction bestseller. David Gibbins joins the bestselling ranks with The Lost Tomb coming in at #19 on the Paperback Fiction list and Danielle Steel’s Amazing Grace maintains stature on that list as well at #7.

As the financial and economic crisis looms at the forefront of consumers minds, Wall Street Journal Online recommends The Smart Cookies’ Guide to Making More Dough by the Smart Cookies with Jennifer Barrett. Recognized as a top five bestselling book about your personal finance’s, WSJ.com says the book advises to “take charge and get out of debt.”

Bantam Spectra launches a new short fiction contest

Bantam Spectra has just launched the Spectra Pulse Short Fiction Contest, the first fiction contest by the imprint for unpublished writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. One lucky winner will receive $100 and have his/her story published in the Summer 2009 issue of Spectra Pulse, Bantam Spectra’s exclusive magazine distributed at Comic-Con San Diego and select conventions and bookstores (available July 2009). The deadline for entries is January 31, 2009. The winning story will be announced in April 2009.

Rita Mae Brown Wins Library of Virginia Award for Puss N’ Cahoots
Congratulations to Rita Mae Brown who won a 2008 Library of Virginia Literary Award as the fiction “People’s Choice Award” for her novel, Puss N’ Cahoots. The People’s Choice Awards are co-sponsored by the Library of Virginia and James River Writers, a nonprofit Richmond-based writers organization. Winners are decided by readers voting online and in libraries.

Lynch, Fowler and Chong Win British Fantasy Awards
Three Spectra authors took home British Fantasy Awards from Fantasycon 2008 held in Nottingham, UK. Winners included Scott Lynch (Red Seas Under Red Skies) who won the Sydney J. Bounds Best Newcomer Award, Christopher Fowler (The Victoria Vanishes) who won the best collection award for Old Devil Moon and Vince Chong (the artist of the Crystal Skull game) for best artist. The BFA’s are presented annually to works of fantasy art and literature.
